“Great place for railway enthusiasts”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

We stayed three nights in a comfort room on a half board basis. The hotel offers good value for money. Our room was large and very clean. The room was also surprisingly quiet as we were at the back of the hotel. Breakfast was varied with something to suit all tastes. Dinner was a three course affair with a choice of main courses. Food was well presented and tasty although dominated by meat. Perhaps fish or pasta should be offered as an option some evenings. The hotel is opposite the loco shed where they service the locos for the Harz Steam Railway. If you are a railway enthusiast then a visit to this hotel is a must as you can watch the trains from the restaurant!

We has a front room, because of the railway view, perhaps a little noisy (NOT the trains, but the main road is busy from very early to very late) Room was simple, but comfortable, with a good bathroom, and excellent heating, which we could control to our liking.
The dining room is pleasant, my wife did not believe that you got your drinks and desserts by train, until it happened, but the menu is a little restricted. If you don't like pork, you are really in trouble. Breakfast is typical 'continental' breakfast with good selection of rolls, breads, croissants, etc. etc.
Staff speak very little English, so even schoolboy German helps, but the staff were always very helpful.
If you need to check out very early, as we did to catch our ferry home, then only the front door is open, and you MUST take a room key with you! Car parking can be a bit tight.
Be Aware that sat nav will try to take you PAST the hotel, on Bahnhofstrasse, you need to turn at the lights!

Room Tip: If you want a railway view, the front rooms. If you want to keep away from the road noise, choose at...

Have a railway room at the front and watch the engines! You are right there!! You can see them being filled up with coal and water and having the boiler raked out. Maybe some smoke blows in your face or the engines shoot steam in the night - but this is what you should be at the hotel for! There are railway posters, lamps, railway things everywhere...
There is quite a busy road between the hotel and the tracks, not sure why you cant see this in the photo?
Our room was quite large and the furnishings are modern and everything is clean - and would be even cleaner if the room maid hadn't forgetten to call after the first night! Breakfast was OK but nothing special. The dining room overlooks the railway too! You need to reserve a window seat for the evening if you want to carry on watching the trains!
Wernegrerode is an interesting small town with lots of old timber frame houses in interesting streets - some houses are very historic, and there is an especially attractive Town Hall and also an interesting castle up a really steep hill!
The Hotel is around 7 minutes walk from the statin and 10 minutes walk from the town centre.

Small hotel were you get what you need. You sleep well. The service is given to you by humans wanting to please you, if you have to ask tvice, do so - they are human beeings, not perfect robots. Food is wery good. Order table at the window early to get one of the tabels where you can get your beer transported to you by an LGB-trin. Realy pleasent. Order small beer; and you can dubble up the train-transport - as we did. Enjoy your breakfast and dinner watching HSB steam and DB trains passing in front of you.
Excellent for every trainlover. If you are not, take a look on all the pictures and items inside the hotel - and be one.
We'll come again.

We stayed at the Hotel Altora for 4 nights during April 2013 and found the hotel to be fine. We had one of the Railway Rooms with a view to the steam shunting yard across the road, which is great for railway enthusiasts. The room was good, though lacking in adequate shower gels/shampoos, and breakfast was OK if not exciting.

However, when we checked out, paying with a Visa card, the hotel staff insisted in putting this through in Pounds Sterling instead of in Euros. Increasingly, travellers are offered the choice of whether to pay in Euros or Sterling, and it is always advisable to opt for Euros,as opting for sterling means you are agreeing to an exchange rate of the hotel's (and their bank's) choosing. However, we were not given the choice, and the hotel staff insisted that the amount shown in pounds was for information only and refused to void the transaction. Needless to say, on checking my account once home, the transaction is indeed in sterling at a poor exchange rate. I estimate to have lost about £15 on this. I have drawn this to the attention of the hotel and await their response.

I would advise anyone staying here to insist on paying in euros, and probably in cash. This is a worrying practice which all travellers should be wary of.

Room Tip: If you enjoy viewing the steam engines, ask for a Railway Room.

Stayed 4 nights to visit the HSB, which is just across the road. Our room #12,was quiet as we requested, warm, comfortable, and spotless.Excellented buffet breakfasts, and we ate in the resturaunt several nights-Beware,even the meals for the smaller appetite are big! Food is prepared when you order and is very tasty. If youcan book a window table, your drinks are delivered by ( model) train! Try the Schwartze beer!
We speak a little German-badly-and some of the staff speak good English,so we got along well.
All were very pleasant,Vanessa and Eloise in the evening, sorry didn't get other staff names.
The old town town is close to hand, and the castle a bit further up the hill, well worth the walk for the view.
50m. from the Hotel is a Lidl store-unobtrusive-good for fruit etc.-beers and wines about half UK price,if you have a car to carry them.
Would go again, and reccommend to anyone.
Dave & Sandra.

Room Tip: The railway view rooms also overlook the main road.Side and back rooms are quiete.

A friendly small hotel in the lovely town of Wernigerode. Friendly staff and comfortable rooms. Breakfast was reasonable, but make you bring shower gel as only one small sachet was provided daily.

I would definitely stay again.
