“Not up to 4* quality”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2008

Let me first agreee that the Schlossberg is in an excellent location and that the restaurant serves excellent food (we were able to eat outside on the terrace). We stayed in what they call the Fursten Grotte which is the annexe housing the restaurant and which has about 6 rooms. Our room was large, light, modern and beautifully well-appointed, and we enjoyed our stay in it. They are actually cheaper than the main part of the hotel and we were pleased in the end that the main hotel was full.

However...

Breakfast was taken in the main hotel up a steep flight of stairs of outside steps. Similarly for those staying in the main hotel the restaurant was down these steep steps. Elderly persons may find this an awkward arrangement either way, especially in bad weather.

We found the breakfast to be poor by 4* standards. Bread was dry, poor quality rolls, meat selection was in our opinion of cheap supermarket quality, and the atmosphere in the breakfast room was that of a Victorian library, though the staff were pleasant.

The final problem came when we checked out. The Credit Card machine was broken, even though when we checked in we were told we cound pay by Visa. The machine had obviously been broken for a few days since they had had time to produce, print and laminate a notice which was half-hidden on the reception counter. However they had not bothered to get the Credit Card machine fixed or implement a backup system. In my experience, most business-people do not carry unnecessary cash so would have had major problems at this point. NOT four-star service.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2008

This hotel - which is 4* - is an older building a short walk outside the main town on a hill below the castle. Our room was not too large but was comfortable with a good bathroom and a wonderful view over the Harz mountains. The staff were courteous and helpful. There is an associated small restaurant with good food and an amazing breakfast buffet. The house is welcoming with scented candles and has a sauna and provides wellness treatments.

We had a wonderful time and I would certainly go back

  • Liked — The charming house
  • Disliked — The bed - I know its common in Germany but it was two single mattreesses with a gap!
