“Excellent base to explore southern black forest”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Frankly, I've never had a vacation that costs so little money. The hotel's budget friendly and transport, entries to attractions are all free.

THE HOTEL: The hotel's a typical good German style hotel. Very clean and well run with helpful staff. Buffet breakfast is typically German (not a huge spread; but all items covered). Guests are assigned tables for breakfast and there's program sheet of events for the day. Wifi is available but inconsistent in the room. The location is just right off the train platform but there's no noise from trains.

THE TOWN: very quiet, nice, clean place with local/European tourists. There's a natural reserve type of place nearby. Easy access by train to Titisee and Titisee-Neustadt for buses to places not on the train line. Less than 1-hour train to Freiburg.

THE FREEBIES: Besides Konus card for free transport, the hotel gives the Hochschwarzwald card for entry to attractions etc. Note that for Hasenhorn Coaster, entry is limited to once per day. (You can go everyday during your stay!)

Located right smack in the center of town, you can't get lost or not be able to find your hotel. One in our party was given a room in the main hotel and we were given a room at their adjunct hotel, Sonne, located just a few hundred feet away. We had many of our meals at the main hotel but the Sonne had the same breakfast set up as well. Rooms were adequate, clean and had what you needed. Shower in the Sonne was tiny!!! Wifi never seemed to work in either of our rooms at both hotels but if you went downstairs near the check in, it worked. Convenience is superb for getting around. First day we were there we were greeted like royalty but the next day the charm was gone. Not sure what we did but that's ok, we were not in our rooms or the hotel much!

Room Tip: If you want a little more quiet setting, ask for a room at the Sonne.

We came across this hotel by chance as we were looking for something in Titisee and most decent hotels there were either booked or were way too expensive. Hinterzarten is 1 stop away from Titisee or around 3kms walk. The town is picturesque. Its a small quaint village except that all houses are large and exceptionally beautiful. I think more than 50% of houses are either professional hotels or guesthouses or offering free rooms. 5 mins walk in any direction and you are out of the town into the serene forests.

The hotel is right next to the station making it very convenient and despite the proximity to the station still offers beautiful views. The staff is very friendly, can speak good English and is always in traditional costumes. The rooms and the vicinity is very clean (and so is the entire town). Overall it gives a feeling of a family run traditional hotel. They have additional amenities which for some reason they don't popularize like free Hochshwarzwald card (trust me this is a great card) and free sauna. You can book massage which is also reasonable. The restaurant is nice and traditional with decent eating options. The dinner menu gets almost over by 9 :(. I guess the only think which could have been better is the breakfast which was quite basic.

We were looking for a room that will be big enough for two adults and two teenagers. We have been offered a room at their satellite house, Sonne Hotel (located about 100m from the main building).

We received the room on the ground floor, which was designed for handicapped people. The room was very big, but it feels like something was missing. For example there is a small sink in the living room but they didn't offer a kettle. Breakfast was good, and the staff were very nice and helpful (one of the reason for us to choose this place was the Wi-Fi that they claimed they have. When we arrived the Wi-Fi wasn't working but the do their utmost to solve the problem).

Stayed here based on the previous reviews, we travelled from Zurich just for a quick break. We had a truly superb stay for 3 nights. We had a lovely room right at the front with a balcony, immaculately clean and very nicely decorated, and one previous reviewer mentioned the shower, I can confirm it is one of the most powerful I have ever been in. Restaurant is delightful and was packed for the entire 3 nights we were there, delicious food and great service! Cant wait to return actually, it was a great time away. Lots of things going on in the village and you get some great discounts with the card they give you upon check in, I think we saved almost as much as we paid for the room in discounts, im not kidding. Great location for all you golfers, hikers and bikers.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 31, right at the front on one of the pretty balconies. Very quiet at night, dont...

I am delighted to have discovered this gem of a hotel and can not wait to return. Walter, the owner and his team could not have done more to make us feel welcome and at home, even putting up with my appalling attempts to speak German with infinite patience and a wry smile! Freiburg is one of the loveliest cities I know and staying in this cosy, warm, stylish and welcoming place was the icing on the cake. Fabulous location, lovely room, great beds and bathroom, with everything you needed, great breakfast and dinner and a wonderful atmosphere. One really felt part of the family as opposed to yet another tourist trooping through. Yes, we were very happy here and would heartily recommend it!
