“Charming little hotel”
Reviewed 27 June 2007

We just returned from a stay in this hotel. The hotel is very charming and clean. The staff are friendly and speak excellent English. The only downside was the lack of air conditioning in 90+ degree weather. A ceiling fan would have been a welcome relief from the heat.
We didn't eat at the hotel except for breakfast, so I can't offer any opinion on the food. The breakfast was a typical continental breakfast. The food was fresh and replenished as people ate.
The hotel website is great. They show pictures of all the rooms and you can book which room you want to stay in.
The town itself is small and fun to explore. Meersburg has the oldest castle in Germany. It was interesting to walk through. Many of the town people do not speak English, so knowing some German is helpful. Overall, if you're looking for relaxation, this is an excellent place to stay.

Tranquil, comfortable and an excellent base for day trips on the Lake, to Zurich and to Austria. Wonderful staff and an exceptional international menu -- so unlike much North German cuisine..
Tip: From the airport at Friedrichshaven take bus 7394/7395 to Meersburg Kirche and the hotel is 100 metres down the hill. Public transport: trains, buses and river ferries are cheap efficient and, unlike the UK, integrated ! -- no need to hire a car.
Great value for money.

I have taken 2 small groups to the Zum Baren and in both instances staying there was the highlight of the trip for everyone. The owner, Michael is an excellent host and chef. The building is of historical significance, so much so that it was on the German 20 mark note for many years. The staff was very accommodating and anxious to make our stay memorable. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Real travelers ache for places like this. Baren doesn't supply fancy TVs or cozy robes. It doesn't come equipped with a concierge or even air conditioning. HOWEVER, if you're fortunate enough to get a room there, you will be happy. It is gentle and calm, filled with caring employees and rooms that take one back in time. I was awakened at 6 AM by a CUCKOO that had landed in my open window. I didn't mind being awakened at that hour, as the GIGANTIC meal I had at the hotel the night before sent me to bed early, well sated. Besides, how often do you get a live cuckoo clock?

It should be said that Meersburg is not the place for the young and restless. It's an antiquated town with a majority of antiquated, or at least sedentary, people. For me, it was a relief after a long stretch of work.

All for an incredible price. Bliss.

We have just returned form staying 5 nights at the Gasthof zum Baren, in Meersburg. It was a lovely hotel. Very quaint with steep stairs and dark passages. The room was large and airy and very comfortable. The bathroom was a little on the small side but very clean. The staff were very helpful, especially the owner Michael who took time to chat to us and even gave us a bottle of wine as we left. Our only regret is that we did not eat dinner in the restaurant as there is so much choice in Meersburg.

Agree that this is a lovely German guesthouse. Everything clean and typically German. Rates start at EUR 48 for a single room to about EUR 88-106 for a double. Reservations are fine over email (in English) and they do not take credit cards - only cash. There is a bank basically right next store with a 24 hour ATM. Furniture is nicer than in the Lowen which is right across the (pedestrian) street. We had to stay in the Lowen the second night due to no vacancy in the Baeren. Both are a few minutes' walk down the hill along the main street to the lake (Bodensee or also known as Lake Constance) and even less time to the castles. It is in the center of a cute German town. Take the passenger ferry to Mainau Island with its beautiful gardens or the city of Konstanz which is a lot bigger than Meersburg. The car ferry is actually cheaper by a bit but it puts you further out of town than the passenger one (EUR 4.40/each way to Mainau, plus a discounted ticket of EUR 7 to the park). I will try to post info in another location. Breakfast, included, is cold meats and cheeses, yogurts, breads and butter and jams, hard boiled eggs, and some cereals, juice, and coffee or tea. We all had a lovely time and would definitely stay here again on our next visit. While not on the water the location was perfect for us as we could walk down for dinner and eat along the water, and we saved $$ on the rooms!
