“Excellent hotel, excellent service”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

We stayed at the hotel for the last week. (Aug 2014) as a family of four at half board rate. Two adults and two teenagers. The rooms were of a good standard and the food was also good and plentiful. Breakfast was a help yourself affair of a continental style, but there was also scrambled egg, boiled eggs and European cooked bacon available. (Not Danish bacon, stay in England if you want that). You could eat as much as you wanted. There was a lot of choice for the evening meal which you selected during breakfast and usually consisted of 4 courses. The rooms were clean and the service from all of the restaurant, cleaning staff and management at the hotel was top rate. The hotel was about a 1.2km walk from Rupolding but it was a pleasant walk and helped us walk off some of the excellent meals we had. In the hotel there was a sauna and a table tennis able and table football game. The owner of the hotel also provided a bucket and bag of ice on two occasions so that I and my sons could complete the ice bucket challenge. If I came to this area of Germany again I would happily stay at this hotel. Thank you to all of the hotel staff for a great stay.

We stayed for 1 week in August. Stunning views and from our balcony we looked out onto pasture and mountains. Large family room. The boys bed was too hard and this was quickly sorted out by Heiko on reception when we pointed this out. Food excellent with choice of meat, fish or vegetarian. We started on waitress service but this moved to buffet service after 2 days which, whilst we sampled more, was not what we were expecting. Breakfast excellent with a choice of hot and cold food and a fresh fruit salad and fruit compote daily. Games room good for boys who were able to runaround in the outdoor play area. Rupholding card excellent and we used it to travel on the local buses. Only complaint would be that hotel felt soulless at night with no real bar area and we found ourselves staying in the dining room chatting to fellow guests. The hotel is 20 minutes from ruhpolding and it was too far to go out at night. If you do venture out take a torch.

We stayed at the Maiergschwendt for a week in July, 2014. There were plenty of good points about the hotel: we had a very good, spacious, clean room, with a balcony and nice views; the hotel is out of the town and very quiet at nights; the food was generally very good indeed, with the coffee at breakfast of a good standard (unlike in many other hotels that we have stayed in) and the staff happy to provide hot, frothy milk. The juice at breakfast was also fine - the sort that you might buy in a supermarket at home, rather than the watery squash type juice that we seem to get in some hotels. There was an excellent selection of food at breakfast, including fresh fruit salad, a wide selection of delicious bread, bacon and eggs. The soups for dinner and the desserts were particularly excellent and the small kitchen team do a great job; the welcome drink that we received with our first dinner was very refreshing and welcome; the free coffee and cake that we enjoyed for tea one afternoon was also very welcome; the sauna area was enjoyable and we made quite a bit of use of it during the first part of our week when the weather was not so good; the staff were pleasant and helpful, particularly the chef and the ladies who were on duty for breakfast; the hotel provided free wi-fi throughout the entire week and this was accessible from our room.

However, we did find some aspects of the hotel less satisfactory... (i) although the beds were very comfortable, the one pillow each that we were initially supplied with were the softest that we have ever come across. On the first night I went down to reception sometime before 10 pm to ask for a second pillow for both of us only to find the place in darkness and nobody around to help; (ii) we were troubled with flies in our part of the dinning room throughout our stay. I suspect that people further from the door were less troubled; (iii) we were supplied with one small bar of soap and two shampoo sachets for our entire week. At no stage were these supplies refurbished. This does seem rather penny pinching and unnecessary. Other hotels regularly replenish; (iv) the hotel had changed owners a couple of weeks before we arrived and, perhaps due to teething problems, we did get the impression that things were not as good as they had been before. During our week there was obviously some experimentation going on - initially all four courses of our dinner were waitress served; on our third day two courses were waitress served and two were help yourself. Over the next few nights this continued with seemingly some random allocation as to which courses were waitress served. Other guests complained and by the end of our week we were back to all courses being waitressed served! (v) there never seemed to be enough croissants for breakfast....

Admittedly these are small complaints, which could easily be addressed.

Ruhpolding itself is a really lovely place to stay. There are beautiful walks and mountains and the town itself has some great cafes and bars. The Extra Card allows you to take local buses, trains and chair lifts etc for free and so is very welcome.

We have just returned from spending an enjoyable week at the Landhotel Maiergschwendt just outside Ruhpolding, booked through Thompson's. We had a family room for four which was sufficiently spacious and comfortable with a balcony providing a nice view across the valley. The hotel is very quiet and peaceful with lovely views over the Unternberg hills. The food was great with a good choice of fish, meat or vegetarian dishes with four courses. Although I would say it was a 30 minute brisk walk (down hill) for us to reach Ruhpolding, there is a free (with the extra card) local bus that stops outside the hotel approx every couple of hours throughout the day that will take you into the town. The only downside to the hotel is that some nights it stopped serving drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) at 8.30 pm and unless you wish to walk down to Ruhpolding (there are no buses running in the evening) there is no where else nearby to go in the evening. There was, however, plenty to entertain the children in the evening with a games room in which there was table tennis, electronic darts and table football and there were also swings and a trampoline outside. I would certainly recommend the hotel if you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing base for your holiday around Ruhpolding, with good food. I would also recommend Ruhpolding as a lovely place from which to explore the area and there is such a lot to do in and around the town including the fabulous Vita Alpina spa where there were several outdoor and indoor pools including diving boards (which my kids loved) and an indoor wave pool - free entry with the extra card.

Just returned from the Maiergschwendt and we were very happy with our hotel choice. Staff were very friendly and always helpful. Food was very good and varied, no two menus the same. The hotel is situated approx. 20 to 30 mins from Ruhpolding centre depending on your walking speed. We had hired a car which meant it was only a couple of minutes away, but on hiring the car which was pre-booked over the internet there was a deposit of 900+ euro's which once returned to your card had an extra £40+ exchange fee, so if your hiring a car it's worth reading all the small print or even paying the deposit with cash.
As for the location - Where to start? Germany is amazingly clean and the scenery is out of this world. Ruhpolding is a perfect example of this and is also an ideal base to travel to many amazing locations.
Ask if we'd return? Yes to Ruhpolding and yes to Maiergschwendt.

We had a very good week at this hotel. We had a family room in the Bio-haus which was very large, with doors opening onto a small private terrace. The bathroom was compact and had only a shower but that was fine. Plenty of wardrobe space, free Wi-Fi and pretty much everything you might need, including a complimentary large bottle of water. The only thing I would suggest in the provision of a small fridge and a safe. There is a cupboard in the desk area which seems designed for a fridge but is empty. Staff will also store your valuables but it's a bit of a pain if you want to access your cash regularly.
The restaurant offers great half board and we really enjoyed the three course dinners. Breakfast was very good too with a few hot offerings.
The best thing about the place, however, were the staff who were very nice and very helpful. There's a nice little terrace off the restaurant which is great for an afternoon drink or coffee and cake!
The hotel is located out of, and above, the town. There's a path that drops you down into Ruhpolding in around 20 minutes so it's only inconvenient if you are carrying heavy supplies. That said, there is a local bus that can drop you right outside the door (free with the guest card) but it only runs a few times a day. The bus timetable is required reading!!
The guest card is excellent as it allows one free ride on the gondola per stay, one free ride per day on the chair lift, free train to the nearest main town, free access to the fabulous indoor/outdoor pool and several free buses which travel to other towns in the area. We reckoned we got over 120 Euros worth of value and we didn't use the card that much.
My only complaint, and the tour operators need to make this much clearer to people before they travel) is the fact that they don't accept UK credit cards. Personally, I use my card as much as possible as it is a Halifax Clarity card that offers perfect overseas exchange rates and I always get a better rate than I could at any bureau de change. Luckily, we had taken a fair bit of cash too and we needed it to settle our bill so be prepared. The problem isn't limited to this hotel either and others don't accept UK cards, even the bike hire shop couldn't take them so be warned!

Room Tip: Go for a larger family room
