I booked two rooms again this year at the Hotel Wildermann - this is my 1st choice for convenience. The rooms are a bit dated but they were in the process of remodeling and have renovated a few of the rooms with flat screen TVs and granite counters.
Because the rooms are so tiny and the mattresses are 6" foam which i find uncomfortable - I checked out two other hotels in the city (Hotel Golden Ochsen & Aschaffenburg Hof). I had a single room and a double room which were adequate.
For convenience - this is a more suitable choice over the Hotel Golden Ochsen or the Aschaffenburg Hof hotel in the Altstadt. From the wildermann, you can walk to the schloss, shopping, dining, etc... From the bridge, you have an excellent view of the Schloss in all its glory over the Main River.
Traveling with my mother who uses a walker, the Wildermann hotel has an elevator and only 2 steps to enter the breakfast room. Compare to The Golden Ochsen which has no elevator and very limited street parking with cobblestones. The Hotel Aschaffenburg Hof has a small elevator, large hallways but the room sizes aren't any bigger than the Wildermann, it was a bit more expensive and entering the hotel is less accessible because it's a one-way driving entrance/exit. The restaurant at the Hof I've heard better reviews about but for a handicap person, there are approx. 7 steps to enter so it is awkward and less accessible.
One thing the Wildermann has that also makes it my first choice is a sauna located on the 2nd floor. WE only used it once but the facilty is free to guests, has lockers, change room, resting room, two dry saunas and a wet sauna. Nothing like a sauna for getting over jetlag to have a restful sleep. There is also a massage area which i didn't use but the prices seemed average and it would have been great to have a reflexology treatment but there was no one on duty. Unsure if you have to book in advance as they may only come in when there are appointments.
When you exit the hotel, look up at the terrace across from the hotel. The owners live at the top and the herbs, veges grown on the terrace garden are used at the restaurant. Wildermann does the best job of marketing their property and have several other properties in their family-run business. Wildermann is a good "business travel" hotel and convenient. This is not a destination hotel - if you want luxury check out the spessart hotels. I have family/friends in the area and the Wildermann is my top choice of the Aschaffenburg city hotels. The wildermann is a hotel that by the 2nd day - sometimes even the 1st day - the desk staff will greet you by name and already know which room you're in so they can pull the room key from the board.
