“Surprise me”
Reviewed 10 October 2012 via mobile

This hotel seems to me the only one in the city but I can assure that's too the best in maritime chain (until now) well after a full active skiing day and I was not sure that I will stay or not, I went to the reception to asked them about the availability, they welcomed me and offer for me a room with great great great price. Even so was an old hotel and very normal room but the food was tasty and the staff were friendly. And do not forget to swim in the pool.

The Hotel might have been a "state of the art" Hotel in former times, in the 70s maybe.

first the cons:
The price for internet access is with close to 10 € per hrs totally outdated, the bathroom design is totally outfashioned, the complete design of the entire hotel is outdated and approx 79 €s when taking booking.com rates is much to high, compared to several good and more modern 3 star hotels downtown.

the pros;
two swimming pools with clean (more or less) water and with a 25m length both pools are good for swimming.
the view is excellent because of the exponated location above the town.
Mrs. Friede working at the reception was exceptional positiv.
THe Breakfast was very good, maybe one of the best ever had in a 4star hotel.

We really like that this hotel had a swimming pool and a nice sauna. However, both the architecture and the furnishment are rather oudtantes (seventies), but the hotel is very clean. Very suitable if you really want to relax. Easy accessible by public transport (bus). Nice location with good views, wifi has only limited availability and you have to pay for it. Not suitable if you cannon walk up hill.

Stayed 2 midweek nights in January 2012. Weather wasn't great so we spent quite a lot of time in the hotel itself.

Its a large hotel with a wide range of services, but feeling a little dated due partially to the functional architecture, but also decor e.g. wallpaper in rooms, strong patterned tiles in bathroom. Otherwise room was great, clean and spacious,

Great buffet breakfast, huge choice, layout means a bit of a scramble through guests and waiters though.

Nice indoor swimming pool with loungers, we whiled away a morning there. There's also a small fitness room with treadmill, and a games room with a table tennis table.
If you want dressing gown to waltz around in you have to go to the bother of getting it from reception and you will be charged. Supply of towels is free though, I made do with a couple of them.

Parking: hotel is at the top of a short but steep hill, parking at the top 11 Euro per night. I'm fit and didn't mind too much walking up/down the hill to park in the public car park below at 4 Euros per full day.

Found it annoying that Internet connection (choice of wifi or LAN) was charged... seems very old fashioned compared with most hotels I stay in for business.. I think it was 5 Euros for 1 hour (on stopwatch), 20 Euros for 600 mins spread over any time, not cheap.

We ate in the 'English Pub' but the service was very slow - we waited nearly 20 minutes even to order a drink - and the food wasn't great quality either. In particular we ordered the 'Harzroller' cheese pizza for my wife, she is vegetarian, but it came out with pieces of ham in it (unfortunately a common occurnece for veggies in Germany). The waiter guys were nice but there were only 2 of them dealing with a half full zone and they could not be attentive.
There are a range of nice cafes and restaurants in town just 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

We tried the 'English Pub' again next afternoon coffee/cake, one guy handled the 3 tables fine, but menu was frustrating - they were doing a combined coffee+cake price but the nice cakes displayed outside the 'pub' were not included in that offer

There were a couple of small snack packs and water in our room - they were probably gratis, we couldn't see any price list for them or the mini bar, but we didn't dare touch them for fear of being charged. I don't like that feeling.

Summary: Very nice and comfortable hotel, you get a lot for your buck, but you will be royally charged for ;extras' like internet.

The first time I visited this little town in the Harz was in the early 60´s. So I went back with my wife now nearly 50 years later for a revisit. This fantastic hotel with wonderful views over Braunlage and the Harz forrest really did the 3 days we stayed here tao a magic visit. The service was excellent and both the food in the restaurant and the breakfast was of first class. If you want a nice and quiet stay, this is the hotel to choose.

Room Tip: Ask for a room high up in the building to enjoy the fantastic views of Harz

Searching for an hotel nearby Nordhausen, we came up the hotel more or less by accident. Good for us. The very German small town is great for a little promenade, while in a 3 minutes walk of the hotel you find several sports facilities. For mountainbikers there is transport to the top of the mountain via a teleferic. We used it to go up and have a drink. The hotel indoor pool is large, rooms are tidy. We enjoyed very much the restaurant, breakfast and dinner. The buffets are great and not expensive. Some parts of the hotel are a bit outdated, but this never bothered us. We took the comfort room and probably take the superior one for the little extra's when we go back. What we probably will do. Our little 6 year-old daughter had a great time, so did we.

Room Tip: Superior room has bathrobes that come in handy when going to the indoor pool.

An architect's horror story nestling in the hills a little above Braunlage, the Maritim can be glimpsed from almost anywhere in the quiet little ski/tourist town. However its vantage point offers you a vast and pleasant panoramic view reaching across the town to the hills beyond, but only should you have been so lucky as to obtain a room on the south side of the hotel. If you find yourself on the northern side, you might catch the rare glimpse of Grandma stretching out the bat wings on one of the two somewhat sorry looking old archery targets. The interiors of the main spaces are clean and well decorated. The rooms, their facilities and housekeeping are of the quality you might expect from any 4 star hotel, and only suffer from the apparent need to appeal to a burgeoning age demographic for whom the hotel is apparently very popular. The swimming pool and sauna, which we often found to have all to ourselves, were truly wonderful after a long days hiking. With the cable car just a hop and skip down the hill, the Wurmberg is very accesible and Braunlage not far from Drei Annen Hohne from where the charming old steam train will carry you up through thick clouded pine forests to the summit of the Brocken, famous for its mysterious tales of witchcraft and folklore. The Maritim, like every other hotel, restaurant, gift shop or bar in the Harz, boasts its fair share of kitsch witch memorabilia with which to amuse the foreign traveller. We had a lovely stay overall.

Room Tip: South side rooms will have the view.
