“Drachenfels”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

I visited the castle ruins with friends and family in September of 2013. It was very nice. The entrance fee was moderate and the train took us up the mountain to the lookout point. We passed flocks of sheep on the hillside while on the train. We still had to do some climbing to get to the castle ruins, but it was do-able for everyone in our group: the 74 year old as well as the 1 year old. The view of the Rhine river is breathtaking from the lookout area as well as from the castle ruins. There is a restaurant at the base of the castle grounds if one is hungry. We placed money in the dragon machine behind the restaurant, to let my 20 month old nephew-in-law see the dragon come out from behind the mountain. The dragon exited and growled a few times, but my little nephew-in-law was not afraid. There is an inherent serenity there...

“Amazing view, fun train journey.”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

I was a bit disappointed when I got off the train at Konigswinter, looks a bit industrial and down at heel. However it is just a short walk to the station for the Drachenfels Railway and here the station is very modern and well organised. There's a little shop and cafe but the main event s the old train that has been lovingly restored. It climbs up the very steep hill through the nature park and past the 19 th century castle. When you get to the top there is an incredible view of the Rhine very far below, you can look in both directions and see the huge cruise boats that look tiny from up there. There is a modern terrace and cafe with beer and bratwurst outside (in the summer), lots of people when I went but it was a Saturday. Old castle ruin on the top, very pretty. I would recommend walking back down to see the woods and nature reserve, but walking up is for the relatively fit only!

“The cogwheel trip.”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

Trip up to the top was good albeit crowded, once on the top good views were to be had, if weather clear. Very good in bright sunny conditions, could be able to see Bonn cathedral if clear. Return to castle and good layout of gardens, but better to wander round the castle alone , without indulging on a guided tour. This tour too long and boring!

“I Love Cog Railways!”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

We used the tram and train from Bonn to visit Drachenfels. The cog train to the top is a delight and for the princely sum of one Euro we got to "meet the dragon" at the top. Even though the day was foggy and overcast the views were still awe inspiring. We enjoyed lunch in the semi-restored restuarant and found the staff very helpful.

“Super views over the Rhine!”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

Why did we like? The views from the top are stunning; the River Rhine is sprawling below in all its splendour. We also enjoyed riding up the mountain with the quaint little railway. One can hike up (mini hike - 5 min max) to the very top for even more spectacular views. A neat little outing. Warmly recommended!
