We stayed on this working swiss farm because our son, who is three, loves farm animals. It is about a mile outside of Burgdorf and is a small working farm with cows, donkeys, horses, sheep, pigs, and geese. You can stay in a room with a semi-private bathroom or you can "sleep in straw". We stayed in the room with our 3 yr old son and 6 month old daughter. THey gave us a mattress for our son on the floor. The room was very comfortable and clean. The breakfast they provided was wonderful, lots of coffee, bread, cheese, meat, jam, and butter. Mrs. Mathys speaks very good English and she is very friendly. We found this farm through the "Shlaf im Stroh" program which is called "sleeping in straw" where the swiss farms open their doors to tourists in the summer. THe Mathys farm has it's rooms open all year actually. You can walk around and see the animals and there are nice walking paths from the farm down to the river Emm and also a playground about an hour's walk away that was beautiful. THe website for the program with a list of all the farms that participate is http://www.schlaf-im-stroh.ch/en/. Watch out though, another farm we stayed at did not have animals at hte farm b/c they were "up high" in the mountains when we visited so you have to ask about that if you want the animals there. The email for Mrs. Mathys is firstname.lastname@example.org
It cost about 80Sfr/night in the room but the straw sleeping is only about 20Sfr/night.
