What a wonderful event this is for all ages - so much to see and do and great value too! Even when the fair isn't on the mill is a fascinating place to visit bursting with history and the reserve is beautiful too for a walk! So lucky to have it on my doorstep!! Well worth a visit!
We went on a day when there was an open day. The mill was working and there were people showing how the mill works. Very impressive and the trust have done a great job restoring it. Great for adults and kids... Plus a nice little tearoom and shop which is always a bonus :)
Visited recently and was seriously impressed with the quality of the attraction.
The restoration of the mill has been carried out sympathetically and to a very high standard. The associated exhibits and educational material are excellent, the surroundings are beautiful, it's well worth a visit - but if you want time to view all the exhibits in peace and enjoy a leisurely visit, I recommend that you choose a time to visit when another function (eg the steam fair) is not taking place.
Went to the stream fair in May 2105 and drove up from Hitchin which is about 6 miles away. Door to door took over an hour as traffic getting in was horrendous. At least that prepared us for the further queues which were everywhere at the fair (10 mins for toilet, 10 mins to get an ice cream). Far too many people in far too small a space!! Cut numbers by half and it would still be busy. Only thing we didn't need to queue for were the very expensive rides (5 quid for me and my daughter to go down an oldie worldy helter skelter - once!!). This was on top of £8 entrance fee per adult. £5 for a "large" hot dog. This could be a decent festival, but the organziers need to restrict numbers getting in and review their prices.
Went to autumn steam show with grandson who loved it. The mill was open with lots going on. A little crowded inside but a nice lady showed my grandson how flour was made and gave him a go at grinding into a bag which he took home. Tea and cake followed but had to wait as it was very busy. Not a regular trip to do but ok for a one off.
We made a combined visit to the water mill and nature reserve. We were very impressed with the whole experience. Over the years, dedicated volunteers have given up their time to enable the restoration of the mill and in the upkeep of the nature reserve, safeguarding this fine example of bygone technology for future generations. Well worth a visit.
