We visited the restaurant at this hotel in April 2013. We did not stay at the hotel but we dined in the restaurant and had to opportunity to see the property and the grounds. It is a lovely place and the small town of Morat is well worth a visit. The lake is absolutely beautiful and the town is extremely clean and well kept (like all of wonderful Switzerland). The view from the restaurant Juma is spectacular. If you go, try to be there for sunset.

Now, on to the meal. There were 11 of us for a pre-selected very special dinner. Our 5 courses were all spectacular, probably one of the best meals anywhere in the world. Now if you want details - the five courses were: 1. a lovely dish of two different types of asperagus, one of which was an amazing terrine; 2) soup of young peas and mint with scallops; 3) a white fish from the lake Morat with an incredible bouillon, spinach, carrots and passion fruit; 4) veal steak in croute with herbs and a potato galetter, green beans and morels; 5) a rhubarb tart in what is best described in english as puff pastry - mille feuilles in French.

Both wines were from the local area and were incredible. Swiss wine is all so amazing. Be sure to have local wine any time you are in Switzerland. It is as good as anything you will have in Italy, France or Spain. They just drink it all and don't export much so we don't know about Swiss wine if we live outside the country.

The service was perfect. We were invited as guests so I have no idea how much it cost but I can guess. It was worth every penny (even if I had been the one footing the bill).

We will go back and next time we will stay at this hotel.

This is our fourth stay in this special hotel. It's difficult to find a better location if you are after a relaxing break. The grounds of the hotel are amongst the best I've experienced in Switzerland. The rooms are all individually decorated, ours being a suite in an impressive jungle style. It's worth upgrading to a suite if you can since some of the upper rooms are not that big. There's no fitness room or wellness area in the hotel since they assume that the lake is enough - which it is if the weather is good. One thing, this is a hotel that needs good weather to be really enjoyed. The lake was about 14C during our visit, so swimming was out of the question. We have eaten in both of the restaurants that the Vieux Manoir offers and have always been very happy with the experience. Breakfast is taken in the main restaurant and is also a good experience with a pretty extensive buffet. When the weather is warm, you can take breakfast outside. Murten is a 15 minute walk from the hotel and well worth a visit. If you do not fancy the walk or want to venture further afield, the hotel offers bikes free of charge. You can also rent a small boat with an outboard motor. Service in the hotel is excellent and all of the staff very friendly. In summary, the fact that we have been to this hotel four times now says it all!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the lake is a must. Upgrade to a suite if yôu can since it is well worth the (mod...

each room is individually designed, it is worth the money taking a room on the lake side, very friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, beautiful view on Lake Morat where you can swim.

We stayed in the hotel during the Avenches opera festival and whilst the hotel is beautiful and in a great lakeside location we felt certain aspects of our stay were over priced (even by Swiss standards).

Overall the room was of a very nice standard and what you would expect from a hotel of this quality but the "extras" food, laundry etc were quite frankly over priced.

The food in the restaurant was very nice, the portion sizes were reasonable, the table service was excellent though we thought 250chf for a 2 course lunch with one bottle of wine was very expensive.

As we were off to the opera that night we asked if we could have our clothes for the evening ironed as they had become creased in transit:

1 cotton summer dress (not a difficult dress to iron unlike some of my cocktail dresses)
1 shirt
1 pair of trousers

The bill for this was an astonishing 111chf - it took the staff 15 minutes.

On checking the bill we discovered we had been charged an additional 50% charge for giving the laundry staff less than 12 hours notice! This we think is an unfair penalty given we were only staying one night and therefore it would have been impossible to avoid the express laundry fee. We have stayed in other 4/5 star hotels within Switzerland and the normal rate has been around 60-70chf for the same service this is inclusive of two occasions with my dress being a very fussy cocktail dress which is far from easy to iron!

In all the hotels we have stayed in we have never been penalised for an express laundry charge when we have only stayed for one evening.

This excessive charge was mentioned to the staff on check out and we were told "those are the prices we charge" as you can imagine we were disappointed at this response and do not think our complaint was taken seriously. Also as they don't supply the rooms with an iron or trouser press we were somewhat forced to use this service.

Would I recommend the hotel to other people.... Yes as it's certainly beautiful and the grounds by the lake are the perfect place to relax but make sure you do your own ironing and eat in one of the more charming cheaper restaurants in Murten or Avenches.

This amazing lakeside manor has been renovated a short time ago and this with a good result (as this was our first stay here we do not know how it looked before …). There is a vast, beautiful park with a lot of mature trees, deck chairs anywhere and even a wooden raft with a few chairs, very nice! Apart from the rooms in the manor there is also a “stilt” guesthouse (hidden by treetops but nevertheless obstructing the view on the lake …) and a lake house with private beach, boat and sauna. As far as further infrastructure is concerned we were astonished to learn that there is no swimming pool, no fitness room, no SPA, unusual for a five star hotel and given the rather steep rates for this region of Switzerland. For our family (one teenage son) we booked an adequately sized and nicely furnished junior suite with a lakeside balcony. There was a walk-in closet and a spacious bathroom with two sinks. To our surprise, there was only a tub with a movable glass partition but no separate shower, a little bit uncommon for hotel of this class! The public area of the hotel especially the bar and the salon for afternoon tea are beautifully designed, nicely done! The staff was eager to please although there was still room of improvement, that concerns also the manager. When checking in we were offered a glass of Prosecco that was served in the garden restaurant. After having taken a seat the manager showed up with other probably new arriving guests to whom he was familiar with, took a seat at a near table, chatted with them and did not throw one glance at us, certainly not the perfect host! On the culinary side, there are two restaurants (both 14 points Gault Millau). Whereas the one outside the building was closed (although it is supposed to be open during summer time), we decided to book a table at the restaurant in the main house. The interior was nice to look at and the view on the lake is hardly to beat. Unfortunately, the inspection of the menu was not as favourable as the before mentioned aspects because the prices are very, very high! Turbot (admittedly one of the best fishes) as a main course amounted to more than SFr. 70.--! We were lucky that there was also a menu where you could chose from several appetizers, main courses and desserts so we went for a 4-course-meal amounting to SFr. 90.--. This was a fair price for a fine meal. I would strongly suggest to the management to re-evaluate the price policy of this restaurant because of its location in a not that known region of Switzerland.
As a brief summary, this is a beautiful property in wonderful surroundings but needs finalizations concerning infrastructure, certain aspects of appearance/service and level of prices.

We stayed at the hotel one night. We upgraded to a room with a balcony and a view of the lake. Our room was the biggest in our wing, but it was small, with low ceiling. The bathroom was also small. The property is beautiful, the view form the balcony was very nice, but there was a beam in the middle of the room and we had to duck every time we walked by. This hotel is very elegant, the service is good, but the room and the bed were not comfortable. I don't feel that the price is justifiable. Also, make sure when you make a reservation that it is for 2 people. Our travel agent made a reservation for us and it turned out to be for one person. So we were presented with a bill much higher than we had anticipated. Even after talking to our travel agent in the US, the receptionist did not budge and demanded the newly adjusted payment. I think, in the US a hotel would have honored the quoted price. We paid about $600 for a small room with a small bed and I don't think it was worth it. The breakfast was very nice though.

This is a Relais et Chateaux property on the edge of Lac Morat in Murten, a little over an hour from Geneva. Murten is a charming town, and like all of Switzerland, amazingly tidy and prosperous-looking. It still has its medieval ramparts and it ‘s surrounded by the remains of an ancient moat. The main street of the town is arcaded on both sides, with many upscale shops and a few restaurants. There are fountains and flowers everywhere. (We visited in October.)
Vieux Manoir is a 5 or 10 minute walk from the town which is on the border of the French and German-speaking parts of the country. It’s a giant old half-timbered house that has been extensively renovated. The Swiss seem to love gutting old buildings and keeping them historically accurate on the outside but giving them an utterly modern spin inside. I’ve been disappointed again and again in this country, entering a beautiful old building and finding not one hint of history inside. This is no exception.
However, it’s very luxurious and the staff is welcoming, friendly and eager to please, just as we expected at a property like this. Our small suite had all the comforts and amenities you could imagine, including a balcony overlooking the lake. I liked the bold patterned wallpaper, but wasn’t so smitten with the bare floor even though it was heated. The heated floor in the bathroom was fabulous, however. (One of my unanswered questions about Swiss lodging is why even the most fabulous hotels don’t have real king beds? You always get two separate mattresses, at best with one sheet stretched over both. Not very romantic.)
One of the most delightful parts of our stay was the wonderful dinner we had at Le Pinte, a tiny restaurant in another building on the property. The menu was local and seasonal and totally exceeded our expectations in every way. Breakfast, served in our room, was also fabulous and extensive.
We would have enjoyed a fitness room but walking in the neighborhood worked for the two days we were there.
