“Excellent Alternative to Staying in St. Moritz”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2014

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights while on a couples trip with my wife and another couple.

The location of this hotel is quite unique and comes with a lot of advantages. It is basically next door to the Pontresina train and bus station. With multiple trains and buses departing for St. Moritz (and many other places) every hour, this means you have ready access to anywhere in the area at just a moments notice. However, since you're in Pontresina and not St. Moritz, you get this access at a fraction of the cost.

The second advantage of the location is proximity to the heart of Pontresina. The downtown area is a 5-10 minute, very scenic walk from the hotel. In town you can find restaurants, shops, and guides and equipment rental for outdoor activities.

If you're into cross country skiing or biking, there is a bike/ski trail that starts about 100 meters from the hotel. There is also an equipment rental shop here stocked with reasonably priced gear and expert staff. You can bike or ski to neighboring towns in a matter of minutes or hours. You can even hike, ski, or bike to St. Moritz relatively easily.

So those are the big benefits of the location. On top of that, the hotel itself is a typical Swiss 3-star hotel with some extras here and there such as heated bathroom floors. The other thing we loved about this place was the restaurant. This was some of the best brick-oven pizza we've ever had, better than most of what we had in Italy! Despite the numerous local restaurant options, we ate at the hotel's restaurant on both nights of our stay because we couldn't imagine finding anything better (and of course for reasonable prices).

All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel. It was the most expensive night's sleep on all of our trip, but as I said above it's a deal compared to what you get in St. Moritz and, as in the rest of Switzerland, you pretty much get what you pay for here.

Stayed here for two nights with husband for leisure. We took the Glacier Express on Christmas Day from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Then we took a bus from the St. Moritz train/bus station to the Pontresina train/bus station. It was a literal 4 minute walk to the hotel after we got off the bus.

Check in was easy. We had reserved online a few weeks before using Venere.com. After the long Glaicer Express trip, we were starving for dinner, and made a reservation at the hotel's restaurant. The restaurant has an upstairs and downstairs dining area. Both areas are cute and cozy. We had fantastic pizza- the diavola and divolezza were both particularly outstanding if you like spicy things. There was a spicy olive oil on the table too, if you wanted a bit more spice. The restaurant offered a nice California red wine; the Chianti was good too. I had tried Swiss reds, but didn't like them. We also ordered a green salad for about 9.5 CHF--don't order this; it's a bit of a rip off, as it's only a small helping of lettuce. Just stick to the pizza or soup. Some of the main courses, which I saw other customers order, looked lovely as well. In particular, the barley soup is delicious after a cold day of outdoor activity.

Our room was very close to the main lobby. It was small, but the view of the mountains was nice. The bathroom in our room was an odd shape (a triangular shower) but our friend's bathroom was shaped normally, so it was just because of the placement of our room that the shower had an odd shape. The heated floor in the bathroom was a nice treat. The toiletries weren't great- be sure to bring your own.

The room had two complimentary sparkling waters--that was a very nice touch that no other hotel we stayed at offered.

As for planning activities, the ladies at the front desk weren't much help. The gentleman at the St. Moritz train station, the man at Go Vertical in Pontresina, and the man at the rental shop across from the Pontresina train station were all very helpful.

When we were there, a great snowstorm blew through, so sledging (sledding) and snowshoeing weren't viable options due to a strong avalanche warning. The only thing left to do was cross country ski to Celerina. The trail to Celerina begins right behind the hotel. There is a rental shop there as well, literally 4 minutes from the hotel. We paid about 21 CHF each to rent cross country skis, poles and boots for the day. It was fun, but the view would have been far better if the weather had been nicer.

In the evenings, we stayed in the hotel's common area and played games. It reminded me of college.

The room itself is nothing great. In our room, there were ugly red carpets along each side of the bed. The towels were thin and rough. The curtain pattern was bright red and kind of unattractive. The floor tiles had a dirty tinge to them- though they were clean, they didn't look clean.

But the room was adequate. The restaurant was fantastic. The location was easy.

It cost about 300 USD per night. It was the most expensive hotel in our week in Switzerland- and we stayed in four hotels during a whirlwind trip.

Breakfast was included and was thorough. There were eggs for boiling, a selection of deli meats (the salami would run out quickly), nice crusty bread, hot cocoa packets, crunchy Ovaltine spread, like Nutella, and Nutella, croissants, whole fresh fruit, cut up fresh fruit, prunes with pits, cereals and granolas, a selection of cheeses that you cut yourself, etc.

The wifi worked just fine.

If you aren't big on aesthetics, stay here, and definitely try the pizza.

We had lunch in the charming restaurant before our carriage ride to the Roseg Valley and glacier. The carriages are directly across the street so the location is perfect for a stop before taking the ride to the glacier. They served excellent large pizzas which you could split for a three Swiss francs plate charge. Other restaurants we stopped at would not allow you to do split orders. The restaurant also serves the usual Swiss food. As in any place in Europe it's cheaper to have a beer than a soda. Switzerland has excellent wine and this restaurant was no exception but the prices were very high and the pour even smaller than the usual European standard.

Pontresina was our two night stop after riding the Bernina Express from Lugano to Pontresina.
Hotel Station was a welcome site as it sits perfectly located near to the train station. Lovely Pontresina is an uphill walk which is best made without suitcases is tow. It is a very beautiful hotel with lovely spacious, nicely decorated rooms and private baths. Breakfast was superb featuring all the expected : selection of cereals, fruits, meats, pastries, delicious breads, equipment to cook everything from a soft boiled to hard boiled egg and a machine that makes outstanding coffee and hot chocolate at your request! If Pontresina is on your itinerary, consider Hotel Station. You won;t be dissapointed!

Stayed here for 15 nights at the end of the skiing season. It is very conveniantly placed for both train and bus connections if you want to get around. It is a 10 min uphill walk to the centre of town, though.
The Hotel is simple, but clean and comfortable and the restaurant is good. It does have a Sauna which is nice too. All in all, a nice place to stay and less pretentious than the Hotels in the twon centre.

This was one of the best hotels my husband and I stayed in during our 15-day trip through Switzerland. To be fair, there weren't a lot of hotels open in the Pontresina area during the time we were traveling (May), but Hotel Station was a wonderful surprise. It was bright, modern, and very clean. Its location can't be beat - right across from the train station. It made a great home base for us - we spent 2 nights in Pontresina, hiking during the day and returning in the evening to a hearty meal at the attached restaurant.

I had some trouble connecting with someone who spoke English when I was making our reservations. I called 2 different times, trying to catch the English-speaking staff member and finally resorted to sending an email. We didn't have any trouble with a language barrier, though, while we were there.
