Walk right up to an actual glacier!
Breath-taking.
Within walking distance to a number of hotels in the Pontresina area but you can save some time by taking the train to the Morteratsch station and starting the hike from there (about 45min-1hr from the train station).

“Morteratsch Glacier hike”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

We have hiked and skied from Morteratsch (train stop) to the head of the glacier descending from Piz Bernina. Relatively easy hike or ski, due to gradual ascent. Great views of the mountains and glaciers in good weather.

“Just as impressive from afar as it is from up close”
Reviewed 1 March 2013

To actually touch/see the Morteratsch glacier, is about a 5km walk from the main station. The path is relatively easy, but if you're doing it in the winter, be prepared to have to dodge cross-country skiers going up and down the trail.
To be honest, we took some photos from the train coming up to Morteratsch, and then lots of photos as we walked to the glacier. Actually touching the glacier was nothing special - the most interesting thing for me was walking to the glacier and seeing the milestones of where th glacier extended to in the past. It is phenomenal (and scary) how much it has retreated since the 1900s. The actual 5km walk to touch the glacier I am not so keen on, so my suggestion would be to maybe go half-way, take some nice pictures, and go back for a hot tea by the station.

“Well worth the walk”
Reviewed 29 September 2012

You have 3 options to see this glacier. The most popular is the short flatish walk from the station. Along the way you can see how far the glacier has receeded over the last 100 years - over a mile. You can get close to the ice if you don't mind rock hopping. Other hikes are more strenuous up to the Hutte (4 hours). Recommend lunch/drink at the hotel at the station! Nice toilets too.
