“Very welcoming and not at all stuffy”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

Our family group of five, including three adults and two preteens, stayed in a family room and a single room at the Hotel Walther for two nights in June 2013. We all enjoyed the many wonderful features of this great hotel and the warm welcome from its staff.

After a day of train travel it was quite a treat to be met at the station, have our bags magically appear in our rooms, and be greeted so warmly (I think this is the only time I've ever been welcomed personally by the owner). When making the reservation I had wondered if the hotel would be too expensive or too fancy for us, and the answer to both questions turned out to be "no." Our rooms were elegant but comfortable. The swimming pool was beautiful and well designed to serve both adults and children well, the playroom was amazing, there were bikes to borrow, the Wifi was really good, there was an afternoon "cake bar" to enjoy, the breakfast buffet was outstanding, the hiking guide was personable and knowledgable, and we had free bus, rail, and cable car transportation in the valley during our stay. All of this was included in the price of our rooms in a five star hotel in a fabulous location, so we felt we had gotten quite a lot for our money.

In addition, we had dinner in the dining room one night, and oh, what a dinner it was! So delicious; the best of our trip, I thought. Although the adults had eaten at high quality restaurants, our children hadn't, and it was a different experience for them, especially for the one "picky eater." But the waiter nicely put them at ease and we had a very pleasant dinner. With wine we paid $250 which was a very fair price for such a memorable evening for five people.

In talking over the trip to Italy and Switzerland on the way home, everyone agreed that our time in Pontresina was too short and that we'd love to return to the Hotel Walter again.

Stayed with my parents for a long weekend and everyone had a great time. Very nice and clean rooms, great breakfast and diner, wonderful spa and swimming pool, restaurants vary between big room and cosy Stüberl. Great as well the very friendly and personal service that makes you feel at home right from the first minute. Very good situation of the hotel also for the bus, train, hiking and visiting the Engadin.

What a wonderful place this is, with outstanding customer service, from the greeting fruit drink to the farewell snack bag. Our room was large, pretty, and very quiet. I don't think I've ever seen such a clean place. Every morning, a "Good morning, dear guest" printout is placed in the elevator and in the breakfast room, describing hikes offered by the hotel and interesting local activities. Because of this, we were able to see the wonderful ceremony in nearby Celerina, with the return of the cows from the hills to the old town church, which also featured sweet local girls in costume offering delicious sweets, and free tea and cheese and crackers offered at the church. Even though the room was expensive, the free Engadine pass we were given enabled us to save about $400 in lift tickets over a 3-day span to see the wonderful glaciers at Diavolezza and enjoy the wonderful hiking atop the train ride to Muottas Muragl and the fabulous view from the terrace bar overlooking the beautiful turquoise lakes surrounding St. Moritz. The pass also enables you free access to buses and trains in the Engadine Valley. You have to stay at least 2 nights to get this pass (also offered at several other area hotels). The hotel pool was just gorgeous, a real work of art. The breakfast buffet was just delicious, with lots of variety. The food next door at the sister Walther property, the Hotel Steinbock, was really good. We also enjoyed eating down the street (pizza, pastas, soups, and salads) at Ristorante Pizza Nostra. There are 2 ATM's within a block and a half, several stores selling outdoor clothing, and a Coop market about a block and a half away. There is a pretty church with a wonderful and unique painted ceiling just up the hill (only open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from about 3:30 to 5:30 P.M., I think). Pontresina is a quiet, small village. We thought it was a wonderful base to explore all of the nearby lifts and a good access point for the 45-minute drive to the lovely painted (plaster removed and decorated) pedestrianized village of Guarda (also accessed by train). We also loved the gorgeous pedestrianized hilltop village of Soglio on the Italian border, about an hour drive away. The wonderful mountain views, stone buildings, cobblestone streets, and agrarian feel with livestock were really impressive and unique. If you need nightlife, a casino, and high-end shopping, you might prefer to stay in the much, much bigger St. Moritz. Right now, they are building a parking garage for 130 spaces for the Hotel Walther and the Hotel Steinbock right across the street from the Hotel Walther, due to be finished in December 2012. The noise from the construction never bothered us, and we never had a problem finding a place to park behind the hotel. There are 2 computers in a large sitting room for free usage. I would love to stay here again.

Each summer my husband and I take long trekking vacations, traveling from village to village. We always try to include at least some time at a Relais & Chateaux property as they are always top of the line in every aspect -- service, amenities, food. Hotel Walther is a lovely example and so we were delighted to plan a stay mid-vacation as a treat. Unfortunately, when we arrived after a challenging hike, we discovered that our travel agent had somehow booked us into a different hotel -- a sister property -- still lovely, but fewer stars, not a Relais & Chateaux property and just not the experience that we had been hoping for. Mrs. Walther personally assisted us and arranged for a wonderful room at the Hotel Walther, transferred credit and so forth. We so appreciated the accomodation. Our room was absolutely lovely, with a balcony and huge windows overlooking the Pontresina area.. The pool and whirlpool were wonderful. The restaurant was excellent with a truly delightful staff. It was a wonderful experience all around. We look forward to returning for a longer stay!

This hotel is really one of the best I went. First because the place is really nice and full of history. The family who own the place is really dedicated to the pleasure of the guests and you can feel a deep pride and attachment to own this hotel. You can feel it in many details I let you discover. The service dedicated to the guests is discrete, kind and equal to a 5 stars hotel. The room was clean, comfortable with a nice whew on the valley and the village. The room service was just fantastic... actually the restaurant has 15 points on Gault & Millau. With no hesitation I would go back to this hotel. They give a little bag with snacks when you leave. Isn't that a proof of dedication to the guests?
