“Great hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2014

My family of four - spouse and two adult children - stayed at the charming Saaser Hof last week and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and indeed Saas-Fee as a whole.

This ski-in and out hotel is ideally situated being equidistant between the slopes and the town centre - less than two minutes walk/ski to each. The hotel is family-owned (but professionally run), cosy, comfortable and with an extensive wellness centre and adequate gym. The breakfasts were superb and dinners were good.

The bedrooms were comfortable although the bathrooms could have been bigger, but certainly adequate.

The owners work in the hotel and they, along with the rest of their excellent staff were first class. Nothing was too much trouble.

I have read other reviews saying the hotel is in a noisy location. We had no experience of this and, having visited Saas-Fee, are perplexed by such comments as the town operates on a silent basis between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. - during this period, the bars and lively après ski moves from outside the establishments' patios to inside and the outside speakers are turned off. There is certainly a lively atmosphere around the hotel between say 4 and 10 pm, but nothing later and nothing overly intrusive in any event.

I would have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending this hotel and indeed would happily stay there again.

This was our first stay at the Saaserhof and you could not fault the location, traditional rustic style or friendly welcome and assistance from the owners and their staff.

We were not sure on the size of the rooms given other feedback but we were more than happy with our room. We had 'effectively' two rooms as the bedroom door slide along to create a separate sleeping space away from our son. Although he ended up in the room with the tv and comfortable double bed! The room was a fine size and given the normal ski sized rooms we were pleasantly surprised although a couple of chairs to sit on would have been good rather than having to sit on the beds.

I would say that we were a little let down with the housekeeping. When you are paying what we did for the hotel we would be expecting more than we got. Our glasses were not changed in the whole time we were there nor was the plate and knife supplied for fruit. We were given one soap and one shampoo and linen that was albeit clean it did have holes. The room however was generally clean.

The food and the breakfast was good. For breakfast there was a good selection of cold meats, cheeses and breads. You could get freshly cooked eggs (variety offered) although the hot food was not so appetising. The evening meal was a very generous and tasty 5 course meal. Had we not stayed elsewhere in Saas Fee where the food was brilliant we have thought the food at the Saaserhof was excellent. There was always a meat and fish option with a third also available, the soups were tasty as were the puddings!

On the disappointing side we had to pay for the kids meals some of the time. The hotel could not decide whether to charge you for the kids meal, which I would have expected to be free when you are on a half board basis, the pudding or the meal and pudding. It seemed to depend on which night it was - some nights we weren't charged at all! Very confusing.

Given the time of year (New Year) we did have to pay extra for the location (I am assuming location as we have stayed in other 4 star hotels at this time of year) and although we were right by the slopes and could ski in/out I am not sure it was worth the extra money.

Would we stay here again? Even with the minor complaints above and they are only little - we would definitely stay at the Saaserhof again but only if the price was right!

The basics for the Saaserhof are excellent if you are looking for a traditional rustic style Swiss hotel. I highly value that the hotel is family run. Nicole and Jonas Bumann give a walm welcome and I am sure would positively assist if you had any issue. The friendly welcome extends to all members of the Sasserhof team.

Location is 1st class close to the apres ski bars and lifts. If you have young childen you can overlook the practice areas with the right room.

Excellent wellness including a selection of saunas and steam rooms. Separately there is a whirlpool area and childrens play room. The hotel masseure is present for real pampering.

Nice to see the wood fire burning in the bar on this trip.

To get best value for your ski visit look for the Crystal week package.

We will certainly look to go back. I would not push to the top mark on this visit as I think a real "wow" that other hotels in this price range offer needs work e.g. if you want a "cocktail of the day" you need to go over the road to the sister hotel.

We were here for a skiing holiday and much prefer to have a ski on/ski off option - this hotel provides this, just a few steps to the nursery slopes and lifts from where you can access the rest of the ski area. It is also a very easy short walk to the shops and restaurants in this lovely alpine town, which is car free. It has a spa area, which its hard for us to comment on as we didn't make use of it. The staff are all really helpful and friendly. The breakfasts are really good with plenty of choice, but we only had one evening meal, which was fine but a little on the expensive side, however there are plenty of cafes and restaurants close at hand. The rooms are very comfortable if a little warm, with basic mini bar ... but note to hotel we would have appreciated the means to make a hot drink. Overall a great stay.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a view of the mountains, but probably more so from higher up?

I went on a 5day skiing trip with three friends. The location is perfect, ski to door. Every evening we had 5 courses. Very good ski food. The staff is very helpfull. The housekeeping did a fabolous job. I would recommend this hotel for its staff and food, not for the rooms.

A hotel towards the end of the season, but excellent standards maintained. Made to feel very welcome by polite and enthusiastic staff. The rooms were of good size and maintained to a very high standard. Would recommend to any one and will certainly be going back.

Room Tip: All rooms have an excellent outlook.

I stayed in this hotel twice in summer 2011 and 2012.
Both times I selected a family room, which were fine and wide even if part of furniture is a bit old. Bathroom very new. Cleanliness is perfect.
Food is very good, breakfast was excellent both for quantity and quality.
The hotel is the last building in the village directly overlooking the mountain and the glacier: view from room and balcony was breathtaking.
Swimming with downslope directly in the water greatly appreciated by my kids
(sadly the water heating system did not work once....)
The spa built directly on the rocks is really very nice and worth a visit.
Staff is very kind.
