“AWESOME!”
Reviewed 7 February 2011

Just returned from a glorious week of skiing in Saas Fee and stayed at Hotel Europa 3* and it was great. I did read the previous review and perhaps like we all know once one thing goes wrong EVERYTHING seems to snowball into something bigger than it is as we have all been there.
First off the staff (Guido and the other shorter gentleman) are the best staff I have ever encountered and I have a strong hotel pedigree so can tell the good ones from the bad. They were very attentive and nothing was ever too much for them to do so much so that if you did not like an option on the menu they would offer a substitute (pesto sauce instead of cream on your past for example).
Yes it is true it is not like other resorts where you can ski from the hotel door to the slope but it is a very short walk (10-15 minutes if that) through a gorgeous village or if you don’t fancy that you can take the complimentary shuttle to the slopes that leave every half hour from about 8 (don’t quote me on that) and there is even a return one in the evenings if your legs are burning from the fantastic skiing. Besides while you walk back from the slopes it gives you the opportunity to enjoy the apres ski while walking the streets as it is all pedestrian with only very small electric vehicles moving about.
The spa facilities are wonderful with a steam room, sauna, aromatherapy room, pysio therm booth, relaxation area and whirlpool. There is free wifi for those who cannot leave the emails alone for a moment in the lobby (24/7). The rooms are clean and they even provide you with a lovely bathrobe for the week.
Yes depending on the room you are in you may or may not see the mountains but to be fair if you are going skiing are you really looking at the mountain from your room or skiing down it looking at the village? I have done a fair bit of travelling and stayed at the 5-7* places where they will comb your hair if you ask and I have also stayed on the other end (cheap and cheerful). All that to say that this hotel is nice but I would say that if you can spare the extra £50 or so for the week I would go 3* versus 2* as we met a couple who stayed in the 2* and described it as 'cozy'. By no stretch of the imagination was it a suite but it was comfortable because like I said earlier, you wake up eat breakfast and hit the slopes, return go to the spa then get ready for dinner and if you can keep your eyes open you have a walk around the village if not you are in bed waiting to do it all over again.
For those who want a very nice cup of hot chocolate before heading back to the hotel I can say that Coftee (yes spelt correctly) is the best place in town and one that opens the latest (11 p.m.). Also a nice bar to go to is called Poison and is not far from the hotel.
So in short it is a nice clean place but like they mentioned paying for tap water seems a bit excessive but on the other hand what you actually get is not a bad deal for the price. If I were to ever go back to Saas Fee I would stay there again.
Just my opinion.

We arrived on 29th Jan and have just returned from a wonderful weeks skiing. It has been years since I was last in Saas Fee and after reading the only review from 2011 I was a little hesitant prior to departure as normally was have stayed in 4* hotels and this time we booked into the 3* accommodation of the property. However I was very surprised at just how good the accommodation was in the 3* section and would have no hesitation booking it again. Lovely bathroom plently of storage and room with flat screeen YV wall mounted for space saving - superb !. As for the food well this was great, breakfast was fruit, yoghurt and museli along with meats and cheeses and an array of breads and rolls with coffee a wide selection of different twining tees and choice of fruit juice. Evening meal was again very good with a different soup each evening along with a good choice of salad bar as another course. Being a vegetarian I dont often get a good selection of food but here I have to say not only was the food varied and different but when there was not a choice for me for starter on a couple of the evenings the staff were so helpful that they arranged me a seperate dish. The dining room staff especially Guido were superb and extremely helpful and pleasant. The wellness area was just what you need after a hard day on the slopes and was always welcomed by the guests as sometimes got rather busy but if you got there as soon as you get back from the slopes you can have it a little more peaceful for the first hour. Although the hotel is a little walk from the start of the lifts and slopes their sister hotel the Saaserhof is at the slopes edge and you can leave your skiis and boots there each evening which was perfect as carrying them up and down each day would not have been good. As everything in Switzerland the shuttle to and from the hotel to slopes each day ran like clockwork or you could take the 10min walk to collect you skiis at the Saaserhof which was nice to get the legs started in the morning. All in all this hotel exceeded my expectation expecially for the price we paid for Switzerland and I would certainly recommend it to anyone and if travelling back would also be happy to book again.

On arriving at the Europa "four star" (I use the four star rating loosely) I was happy with our room and the facilities with in the hotel the wellness area was a great place to recover from the slopes or a hang over. On the first night it became apparent that the half board food was some of the worst I have ever had the pleasure to taste five courses of basic slop served with kilos of salt applied. We started by ordering tap water for the table at this point we noticed They charged for tap water!!! This is a basic human right not a chargeable commodity. At this point we decided to bring are own tap water from the taps in are room out of principle, which you will be glad to no was free. The service was okay from the young waitress however the restaurant manager namely Peter was one of the most rude, petty, vulgar gentlemen I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Bad table etiquette, abrupt And generally new how to make you feel uncomfortable while dining. It all ended badly in the restaurant half way through the week Peter decided to pick an argument with one of my friends shouting at him because he asked him not to clear are glasses before we had ordered drinks t this point my friend asked him not to speak to him it that tone and then one of the off duty chefs attempted to threaten are group, we did not pay this much attention left the restaurant and ate out for the rest of the week. To summarise okay hotel okay facilities complimented by rude abusive and threaterning staff, what a shame.

What a shame! Its sad how a few bad experiences can spoil a holiday. I had stayed in Saas fee before and had a great time so i decided to invite some friends to join me on this trip. We booked in at the Europa 4* hotel and it all went down-hill from there. On first view the hotel seemed satisfactory with tidy rooms (a little out of date) but clean and comfy. Sadly the view from the balcony left a little to be desired, another building about 4 meters in front blocked any possible sight of the beautiful mountain peaks. We had payed for a half-board stay but after dinning there on the first night wished we had not. The five course evening meal really wasn't a treat, how you can serve that quality of food in a 4* hotel I don't no! This however was the last of our worries after being charged for tap water even after we had brought drinks really was disgusting! Breakfast was basic and lacked any fresh fruit. Now to the worst bit, the head waiter/bar manager, after disputing the charging of the tap water on the previous night he decided to behave in a manner that was unacceptable and extremely rude. This continued for days until we complained to the resort manager and hotel manager. Sadly this experience had a huge impact on the holiday and we decided to eat out after that and avoid the hotel at all costs. One of the only good points was the wellness area which was a delectable place to relax after being treated so badly. Thomas Cooper

Saas Fee is an excellent ski resort. The village is stunning and the apres ski is brilliant. Loads of bars all the way along the main street with buzzing atmosphere. The hotel is at the opposite end of the town to the slopes (about 10mins walk in ski boots), but there is a sister hotel at the edge of the slopes where you can use the ski locker room - we found this ideal - walk to the sister hotel in the morning in comfy shoes, change into ski's and boots, ski all day, ski to the door of the locker room, change into comfy shoes and then enjoy the apres ski!! The hotel room (4*) was quite basic but was spacious and had everything we needed. The food was OK - typical for a half board austrian or swiss hotel. 5 courses every night and always a choice of starter and main course. The hotel bar was a bit of a let down as its just a few seats off the restaurant area and so little atmosphere. However, the apres ski in the town is so fantastic that we barely had time to drink in the hotel bar!
The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and we have no complaints about the hotel. The spa area was lovely and a welcome break from the skiing and the apres ski. We are keen skiiers and found that we'd skiied the whole area of Saas Fee in 3 days. We took the day trip to Zermatt which was brilliant and would thouroughly recommend it.

Staff were friendly, good service, head waiter was abrupt but not unfriendly. 5 course meal every night, food was ok but not outstanding, some interesting options like horse! The speciality night was a big let down - poor attempt at fondue and raclette - avoid at all costs. A bowl of hot cheese with some bread does not constitute dinner, and we never actually saw a raclette machine, only the melted cheese on the plate, 1 boiled potato and a pickled onion!
Room (4star) was comfotable with tv, fridge and balcony, although beds didn't quite push together. Not that modern but this may be typical.
Spa area was great, with separate naked area so us Brits could wear our shorts.
Was a 15 min walk to the ski school point, but handy that ski room is at sister hotel next to the slopes. There is also a hotel bus that we didn't use.
Resort was quiet due to time of year, meant empty slopes but nightlife was non-existent.

We stayed only for two nights half-board on the run up to New Year. The hotel is not close to the slopes, but still only a 15 minute walk. In the mornings, there are free transfers to the slopes, and in the evenings free regular returns They also have a ski room in another hotel bordering the slopes.
We stayed in the 4 star bit of the hotel, also there is 3 star and a Garni/apartment area. The room was very decent. Clean, large and recently decorated. Bathroom was good. The rest of the public areas of the hotel were pretty tired looking. The breakfast was ok, with the usual cooked food (scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon) available, however the evening meals were very good, and the staff very efficient. Wine menu was reasonably priced for Switzerland. They have a modern spa area with usual features, which was pretty decent. One thing is if you have kids, they should be in and out of the spa before 6pm if you want them to avoid seeing anyone naked.
As usual in Switzerland, smoking is permitted in the lounge/bar areas, and these are adjacent to the eating areas.
All in all, our stay was ok, but we would not stay there again.
