“Great Service, great location, great food”
Reviewed 4 January 2010

Myself and my husband decided to choose Adelboden as a little known resort for our Christmas snowboarding holiday. I chose this hotel from Crystal as it is a stone's throw, literally, from the main lift to get to Oey and up to the main runs. We weren't aware at the time that the hotel was going to be bought by a lovely Dutch couple and renovated throughout and I cannot even begin to explain how nice it looked when we got there, just like on the website. We were welcomed with open arms when we got there and it turns out we were the only english in the hotel so my school german had to come to the forefront, but everyone spoke quite good english and helped us along the way. There was a four course meal every night, with a fondue one night and I must say the food was of a fantastically high quality. We had a south facing room with a balcony looking over the mountains and it was a real pleasure to wake up each morning and look at the stunning view they had given us. This hotel is definately worth staying in, i think the swiss national team are staying there next weekend for the men's downhill, so it really is good, and so relaxing. Overall, great food, great service, great location and the friendliest people to make you feel welcome.

Nice rooms, slightly dated but clean and comfortable. All seem to have some kind of view, at least from the balcony.

We paid a special rate through Expedia about half the 'rack rate' and would consider it overpriced at the full rate.

Breakfast buffet is good, but don't bother paying for dinner, not even one night, because the dishes we had were small/bland/weird.

Incidentally I recommend the Beau Site hotel for dinner, it is a tad pricey but you get what you pay for in Switzerland and this is a case in point. It is at the other end of the village and has a superb Swiss food with dishes varying each day and season, and with great views and traditional decor.

We stayed at the Steinmattli on a last minute break with Crystal. We were a bit apprehensive about the place from the previous comments but we were very pleasantly suprised. The check in desk and lounge areas looked good but the stairs lift and landing were a bit weird- dominated with metal and plaster. The rooms however were a great size with very comfy beds, down and feather pillows and duvets, a table area and a decent size balcony. The bath rooms were great with a full size bath. There were fantastic views over to mountains from our room with a waterfall in the distance (through binocluars) and in the foreground the Chuenisbargli world cup run.

The food was excellent with no problems whatsoever (apart from a rather bossy maitresse d' who was in fact the owner and was very hard working). I think she was just being very efficient in a Swiss sort of way. Breakfast was good with a great selection of seeds nuts and fruit to add to the cereals, a cold buffet of cheese and cold meats, a hot choice of bacon sausage and scrambled eggs or boiled eggs, good choice of bread rolls and croissants etc. The evening meal was also excellent with a self served starter with themed evenings - eg pate, mozarella/tomatoes, roast medeterranean vegetables followed by a salad buffet with 6 different salad leaves and all the usual other bits. The soup course was always delicious and the main course, although with no choice for those on half board, was very well cooked and tasted great. The night we had fish the "starter" was a choice of a greek salad of feta and olives or moussaka so for those who don't like fish There was nothing returning to the kitchen but clean plates (apart from one night when there was a bit of spinach left- didn't seem like it was many people's favourite vegetable). The tap water was the best I've tasted- Adelboden also has its own bottled water.

The ski resort itself was fantastic and apart from very busy weekends with an influx of Swiss and Germans was uncrowded. I am not sure why there isn't a tour company rep in the resort- we had to make do with the Wengen chap on the phone if necessary (although not required). He said very few English people seemed to go to Adelboden, It is a shame as the area is really quite big with loads of runs, also beautiful and quite easy marked walks.

The main thing I suppose that puts some people off is the relative lack of apres ski. It is a quiet village with quite a few normal shops (no designer type glamour) . At night we slept with the windows open and there wasn't a sound apart from some voices on friday night for five minutes! We found it idyllic.

The other downpoint I suppose is the longish gondola ride to the main Geils ski area- after a short gondola to the base you have to change at Oey- out of one and into another and then about 20minutes to get to the top. However it is a lovely area and the hotel was perfect for us as it was situated nearest to the main lift- about 50 yards walk.

  • Liked — quiet, comfy beds, good bath, great food, great location
  • Disliked — could do with drawers in the room (not just cupboards)

The hotel was ok, and the staff is very friendly and helpful
but I was expecting much more from a 4 star hotel.
The room is big and clean, but looks like a hospital room. The furniture is very old-fashioned and cheap. There is only one menu in the restaurant, you cannot choose anything, it is the same for everybody. Moreover, they say on their website you can rent biked for free, and it was not possible.
To summarize, this is a good hotel if you are staying there for a couple of days, but does meet the expectations of a 4 star hotel.

This is a great hotel, rooms may look a little dated but are clean. Our room also had a decent size table and four chairs in it without the room feeling cramped. The Balconies have fab views of the surrounding area. It is also nicely located in the town. Would definatly stay again.
