Owner description: Waiatoto River Safari. Only NZ jet boat tour from the ocean to the mountains 2.25 hours of extraordinary nature and exceptional beauty only seen on this trip. Experience the history of Gondwana land, smell the rainforest as you walk softly through the dripping ferns with the sparkling clear light shimmering, with the snowy peaks as your backdrop. Your experienced guide will lead you through the ancient river, still untouched as it was thousands years ago when the Maori first roamed the land, the great Moa bird and Haast eagle still ruled the ancient forests. You will experience the magical, breathtaking beauty of the Te Wahipounamu, the maori name for the South West New Zealand World Heritage area and take home memories that will have you yearning to return once more.

This is a great product. The variety of landscape and river scape is amazing; open valley, gorge, lagoons coast.

Staff are friendly helpful and knowledgeable.

This really is a hidden gem and different from the main stream jet boat trips.

“Can't Miss This -- Highlight of Our Trip”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

My son and I had an outstanding tour and boat trip with the two guides. This is much more intimate that your typical jet boat trip. Outstanding scenery, a stop in the rain forest, and singing birds. This is not to me missed, and is a tremendous value considering the cost of other activities in the region.

Thanks very much for your review. I am pleased you felt our tour was good value for money. In today's world with so many activities to choose from, we appreciate people choosing our tour so we can share with them, a real slice of New Zealand.

“Wonderful Afternoon on the River!”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

We were recently in Haast and enjoyed being a part of the Waiatoto River Safari. In fact we were the only people on the boat. Ruth was an excellent guide. We received a personal and detailed tour plus some exciting "360's" at the end. It is a very different tour than the Jetboat ride one would get in Queenstown, for example, but this is what makes it special. Ruth has a passion for the river and the nature that surrounds it and this shows throughout the boat ride. We definitely recommend the tour if you find yourself on the West Coast of the South Island.

Margaret, thank you for your review. It was really nice to meet you and your family. We did have a good day didn't we? I am thrilled you enjoyed yourself and I trust you had a great time around the rest of NZ.

“A great way to spend an afternoon!”

Surprisingly fun, incredibly beautiful, and a completely entertaining host! Came home to find what we saw in the National Geographic! But our pictures were better, thanks to Wayne. A bit off the beaten path, but well worth the effort!

I just saw the National Geographic article after 2 of our guests came this morning, to see the scenery depicted in the magazine. I have to agree that the real thing really does make a huge impression. The river was a lovely blue green turquoise today and it just felt good to be alive in sunny South Westland. Thank you very much for your review and I am glad you got some great photos.

“Jetboating with a difference”
Reviewed 5 March 2014 via mobile

We loved our trip up the river with Wayne....this is a very uncommercialised operation. After arriving at the house we were sent to the meeting point and a little later than the scheduled time off we went. The boat was being maintained when we arrived....everything is very relaxed and laid back and after loading up we set off up river. The trip is lovely....we also went with Wanaka River Journies through equally beautiful landscapes by the way. This is not a thrill ride but it is thrilling if you love being outdoors. We were the only passengers and we had this amazing corner of New Zealand to ourselves for the afternoon. Make sure you have your insect repellent on, this is sandfly heaven and if you go to Jackson's landing afterwards get ready for sandfly clouds....at least in early Feb! We had a great time.

Thank you Robin for taking the time out to write your detailed review. Although Waiatoto River Safari has been running since the late '90's it is still a best kept secret in this part of the world. What makes it so special is where it is located, away from the commercial areas, immersed in stunning scenery with people who are really friendly and relaxed. Ruth and Wayne.
