This place is exceptional. This is my third visit in 5 years and each time it delights not just me but also my family and especially my 6 year old daughter. The plus points are endless...almost but here are a few highlights to tempt you...
1) Great staff from friendly reception staff who greet you with a smile through to swimming pool area staff and restaurant. The people make this the special place it is.
2) Lots to do - or do as little as you want - either way it's all great fun. Lots of outdoor fun and indoor fun elements
3) Great soft play area - though closing it at 6.30pm seems a little early
4) Lodges are exceptional in comfort and value
5) They even gave us a free pint of milk on arrival - nice touch
6) Great walks in the forest and grounds
7) Very good spa area for adults - though children did come in while i was there - which should be monitered better
8) WIFI - small point but it works just fine - and that is a great feat in such a remote area - great to keep the kids busy on You Tube

A few suggestions to improve but nothing to moan loudly about
1) Check out should be 11 not 10 - give people that extra hour in the morning means they may stay and spend some more time and money on lunch etc - a sound business decision surely?
2) Crazy Golf - great fun but slightly over priced - maybe £1.50 for adults and £1 kids would be better or a family ticket of £5 for 2 adults and 2 kids could be a decent offer.
3) Bins near lodges - are great but why not consider having recycle bins near them too. Just the fact that people have to walk to a specific area to recycle rubbish means people won't do it
4) Fridge should be turned on prior to arrival - it wasn't in our lodge meaning we had to wait quite some time before we could use it
5) Ideally have a bigger fridge freezer in accommodation - though size could restrict this. The freezer compartment was way to small

BUT - let me reiterate... this place is amazing and well worth the visit. We're even thinking of making it an annual stay now. Thank you to everyone at the park that makes the experience so wonderful.

We came a year ago attracted by the situation of Darwen Forest and the fact that they had a Lodge with disabled facilities. We had a most enjoyable time so came again this year for a week. The facilities are first class. The lodge was excellently equipped with a wet room and was spacious for wheelchair usage. The Lodge and the Park generally are spotlessly clean, all staff are helpful and friendly. The Park facilities, restaurant, pool, spa are of really good quality. The Park is really peaceful, surrounded by lovely woodland walks and is really accessible for the main Sites of the Peak District. It was again a really good experience.

Everything from beginning of holiday to the end was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble. All staff very attentive, friendly and helpful. We had a issue with the television and it was dealt with very quickly. Grounds clean and well looked after, lodges again clean and well looked after. Restaurant service very good, food quality very good and plentiful. My only comment would be they need light lunch snacks for example toasters and sandwiches. The have a cafe just over the way but if you like to be in a pub atmosphere then this type of food would be appreciated

Stayed here with three girl friends over a long weekend and was very pleased with the experience. We had a spa lodge with a hot tub and the lodge was finished to a great standard - all the mod cons (great oven!) and the hot tub was in perfect condition, we had no problems with temperature etc. We got massages in the spa on site and they were excellent. We ate in the restaurant and it was only OK - pub food really, but friendly service and good cocktails! Overall a really chilled holiday.

That's the good stuff, now to the things that could be improved... firstly the wifi is AWFUL. You cannot advertise it as 'free wifi' because it barely works. It's a very weak signal and you have to login every ten minutes or so, so it's not like you can receive regular messages or calls on your phone as there is no 3G or 4G or even GPRS signal there either. I appreciate that you don't go on holiday to stream Netflix or do lots of downloading, but the connection is barely adequate for WhatsApp. Having phone connectivity is a basic facility nowadays, and it really hampered our experience not being able to search for nearby attraction opening times, places to eat etc.

My second complaint would be around the spa access, as the rules around this are very unclear. We were told on the phone that we wouldn't have to pay extra as we had a spa lodge. Spa access is meant to be controlled by a fob from spa reception, and on our first day, they opened the door for us and left it unlocked as we were the only ones in.

On the second day, staff told my friends they had to pay £3.75 each to use the spa and argued with us that even though we had a spa lodge, we still had to pay. It doesn't even state on the website that you pay for the spa so overall it's very confusing.

Finally while I was using the spa, there was also a woman who was paying for access for herself and daughter, despite the spa door access being open to everyone anyway. This seemed really unfair and they should have just told her the door was open.

Thirdly, a word of warning to pack your own towels as the spa doesn't provide them(!!) we found this to be quite shocking as every other spa we've been to provided towels, so we had to use the ones from our lodge which then got all chloriney.

Overall our stay was really great, it could just have been improved by better wifi or phone signal, and clarity on access to the spa.

Many thanks for reviewing Darwin Forest. We are glad you had a lovely holiday. We are sorry you experienced problems with the wifi. Being in a very rural location we receive very poor mobile phone signal. However the wifi should have worked effectively and you shouldn't have had to continually login. If you had mentioned the problem to Reception our maintenance team would have done their best to rectify the problem. I am sorry to hear you misunderstood the difference between a spa lodge and access to the spa area in Evolution. Our spa lodges have private hot tubs on the veranda but you are still required to pay to access the spa area in Evolution. The spa charges are clearly stated on the facilities page and FAQs section on the website. This issue is not something that has arisen before, but we will use your feedback to review our communication.
