“5 star accommodation in a beautiful spot”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

Have recently returned from a fabulous weekend here (our 5th). We (a group of six ladies) booked the Wensley a large six bedded house which we found to be immaculate, with all mod cons including a dishwasher, microwave, DVD and flat screen TV. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome, even phoning on the morning of our holiday to say we could arrive earlier as the cottage was vacant.
Plenty to see and do in the surrounding area, with nice walks, lovely local pub, stately homes and castles all close by.
We have already booked for next year and are delighted to have discovered this little gem in the Derbyshire countryside!!

Room Tip: Wensley is our favourite, on the end next to office so you can be as noisy as you like!!!

We stayed in Kedleston cottage and had a lovely time although we were expecting a detached cottage, this one is semi-detached as appeared most cottages on site. The downstairs carpets and seating were in very good (looked like new) condition, although upstairs was looking a little tired, for example the bedroom carpets and stool are a bit stained and there was some mould in the shower cubicle. Overall, not quite the level of luxury that I would normally expect from 4 star accommodation, but the cottage is certainly worthy of 3 stars and is well placed for exploring Matlock, Bakewell and the 'white peak' area. and we had a lovely holiday.

Stayed here with family. We had two of the older cottages booked but one had a leak so half of us got an upgrade to one of the new cottages. The older cottages are looking a bit tired but they are well proportioned and well appointed in terms of furniture and kitchenware etc. The older cottage was allocated for dogs but strangely had just had a new carpet fitted. The newer cottage had wood floors throughout the downstairs. Surely this would be more appropriate for the dog cottages? It had pretty much rained constantly for a couple of weeks by the time we arrived so the grounds to the cottages were like soup. Because of this we had to thoroughly clean and dry the dogs every time we came back to the cottage to avoid soiling the new carpet. Obviously you'd do this at home too but wooden or tiled floors would have meant this wouldn't have had to be done so thoroughly each time. We also had to restrict the dogs to the tiled kitchen to dry properly before allowing them in the rest of the house which was also an inconvenience.

The newer cottage was really very nice inside with much more modern furniture and decoration. That said the newer cottage never seemed to have enough hot water and bizarrely didn't have any separate bathrooms or toilets so when we all ate together in the newer cottage (because it was nicer and larger) we had to use the en-suite toilet for the downstairs bedroom which wasn't ideal. Both cottages also didn't seem to have great soundproofing between floors and rooms.

The site itself is very nice with a kind of village feel to it although there isn't a shop of any description. The lake is nice enough but you can't really get close to it which is frustrating. There is also a perimeter trail around the site call the Darwin Trail which is quite interesting and good for a 20min walk or so. The site is quite interesting as there obviously used to be a stately home or something else which isn't there any more. As you walk around the trail you notice piles of stones and Portakabins here and there and the odd fridge graveyard. The lake itself also isn't very deep at all which adds to the mystery of what was on this site once.

Anyway, all quite interesting, a good stay if not a little rough around the edges, would certainly benefit from a shop but would go back.

My Husband and I stayed this March 2012. Its not cheap and the cottages are very tired. Worn carpet on stairs, electric hob not working and no markings on cooker dial to set temperature for the oven. Downstairs toilet unable to use as it was storing mop bucket and other adhoc equipment. When I complained I was offered a free weekend no stiplulation as to when I could have this. When I tried to book this weekend I was asked to pay £450.

We have just stayed at Darwin Lakes. It's not cheap and as a 4 star rated accomodation, we expected there to be a hair dryer, dishwasher, larger tv and unstained carpets. Apart from these it was fair .
