Great food!Nice place. They may NEVER sack the cook! We have been there twice and we recommend all Peak District lovers to pin this pub in the agenda.

Let me put that heading into perspective. We were given a warm welcome by the barmaid who has recently joined the establishment. The landlord was in evidence and busied himself lighting fires and polishing cutlery. He totally ignored his customers. When my wife made the effort to speak to him he was polite, but not exactly chatty. However, it is an untouched traditional English country pub with a great ambience. There is an open fire in each of the three rooms. The bar has an enormous black-leaded range. The real ales on offer were excellent and so was the food. It is a traditional bar menu with slightly more unusual daily specials available. I ordered the steak and Guiness pie and was told that it would take about 30 minutes as the chef makes individual pies from scratch-was that OK? It certainly was worth the wait! Make up your own mind. If you like traditional pubs which serve traditional pub food and good ales, this is the pub for you. Just don't expect the landlord to talk your head off!

well what can i say..... it was looking like a nice evening......
certainly not a welcoming landlord... yes... he was well and truly a Basil Faulty....
Rude and abrupt ..spoke to my son like he was dirt... all because we were sat at a table and said landlord decideds to plonk a reserved sign down in front of us,, even tho we had been enjoying our drink for the last 15 mins at the table.....I tried to reason with him, but was told to 'shift'..
In hindsight i wish i had asked for my money back and not given him our custom.
The food was excellent.. but the evening ruined by an awful man... who may i hasten to add even his staff agreed and said to ignore him........
lovely little country pub, relies on visitors.. so why so horrid..... in the wrong job ithink...

Just popped in for a meal with friends in this quaint country pub been here before in the past but call in on the off chance of getting a meal quickly as we had not booked.
The staff were very friendly and we had a drink whilst waiting the food which was well worth the wait. The barmaid abrupt which was a big surprise as we were all friendly
The chef must be good because the meal was out in a jiff, the fresh prepared food was great we stayed for some time and would have no reservation in recommending this place or visiting it again in the near future. well done all and the chef.

First impressions of this place are that it's just another closed down village pub as it looks like nothing has been spent on the exterior for 30 years. Inside is much the same. Some may like that but it's a gloomy interior. The owner has modelled himself on Basil Fawlty and appears to find customers an irritation, preferring to carry shovelfuls of burning coal through the bar rather than help the hard pressed barman serve drinks. Food was actually quite good but avoid if you are vegetarian "vegetable pasta bake" was awful, tasteless and uninteresting. Overall I would avoid.
