“Nice rooms, poor hygiene”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

I agree the rooms are a nice experience. It has the comfort of a cabin (with comfortable beds) and the cosiness of a tent. We had a room with a private bathroom and this was ok, but nothing more as you can expect of an Ecolodge.
The shared sanitary complex was dirty. I did not expect beautyfull tiled bathrooms, but the wooden cabins full of dead insects and funfus where a little to much. As we where the only visitors that night we where probably not expected to use this shared complex, but it didn't seemed as it was not cleaned just the last days. Also the seats in the shared 'chill' area contained bird feces.
This is a bit pity because the concept is nice!

Room Tip: I would advice to take a room with a private bathroom.

We loved our stay here for 3 nights as part of a tour of Costa Rica.

I think if you are considering staying here then you will love it too as long as you are sensible, do your research and manage your expectations (these are tents in a forest and are Eco-friendly if you want plush, choice and amenities galore you would be better elsewhere.... a hotel even?l) However; I like the idea of another review further down which suggests a swimming pool, as i think the size of the place could accommodate this without taking away from the surrounding environment or the rustic authenticity.
We had no problems with the internet access in our tents whilst here.

I won't dwell too much on what others have said but we felt the tents and bathrooms were clean and safe. Take your shower in the afternoon or evening as they are heated by solar power. We also really appreciated the large balcony with chairs and tables to sit outside. Whilst here we spotted various birds including Hummingbirds, Lizards, a blue jeans frog, sloths ( ask the woman receptionist to show you where he was as we pointed him out to her), howler monkeys and various butterfly's and insects . If you walk along the path by reception of an evening you will also see lots of fireflies which were stunning. Animals are best spotted in the early morning, just before sunset and after it has rained.

My tips would be to take strong insect repellent with Deet and lightly spray the decking area and the netting of the tent at dusk before it gets dark to keep the biters away. We also took with us some citronella tea lights which we used outside of an evening, also keep the lights off inside when you are not in the room and only turn them on once inside with the cover down and the netting zipped up. This should minimize issues from bugs biting or trying to enter your room. However; the sounds of the forest at night are amazing light sleepers are better taking earplugs although in my opinion this would be a shame and somewhat miss the point in being there.

My final tip would be to take torches and headlights as you can then spot things more easily, perhaps do the trails at night for a different experience and not worry so much about getting to your room.

The staff here where friendly and answered many of our questions, they were also very informative and patient at the activity center. We did zip-lining and horse riding and had an excellent time and felt in safe hands the whole time. I did hear that if you intend to go white water rafting now is not the best time so best check when that might be..... I would have liked to have given this a try if time had permitted.

at first I was quite scared because I have always hated camping and the thought of sleeping in a tent made me feel a bit weird. It all went away when we got there though.

We were greeted by this really nice young lady, she explained all we needed to know and took us to the tent, a nice young man took our luggage because you it's impossible to roll your luggage all the way up to the tents without damaging the wheels. only the first bit of the pathway is made on concrete, then the way to the tents it's just a dirty and pebble trail. quite nice though.

The tents are HUGE. They're up on a platform made of hardwood with a nice deck with two chairs and a very crafty table. there is a big ceiling fan to keep you cool. Inside the tent there were two double beds with nice linen, two pillows and an orange duvet (pictures on here must be old, because the duvets they have now are really nice) then to your right there is a little hallway that seamlessly connects the tent to the well constructed bathroom. The bathroom has good water supply, sink, mirror, spotless clean toilet, spacious shower with hot water, a full closet and a safe. the closet was massive and there is plenty of room to put your luggage and clothes. Two extra shelves to put your toiletries and whatnot.

Water doesn't get very hot, but who needs hot water? the weather is really hot and humid during the day so water was never cold anyway.

There is WiFi in all the tents, the dining hall, the tv lounge, reading room and reception... so if you're a crazy photo uploader like me... this is your dreamland in the jungle!

Between the beds there is a nightstand with a lamp and a phone so its always nice to have that security and speaking of security... the safe is quite dated but still fully functional, it operates with a key that is given to you with another key that locks the bathroom (the only door in the whole suite) and the safe is not big enough to hold a 13" Macbook pro, so if you have locks in your luggage just leave it in the suitcase, lock the bathroom door and you're good to go. We also used one of our luggage locks to lock the zippers at night (in case an animal wanted to pay us a visit LOL )

They have all sorts of tours going on, zip lining, horseback riding, rafting and whatnot... and you need to leave the hotel grounds to go to the adventure centre just a couple of miles away from the hotel, but the receptionist can arrange a driver to collect you and drop you off and bring you back. We decided to go horseback riding and it was fabulous! our horses (Napoleon and Ballenato) were very tame and obedient, although they tend to get competitive between them but the guides Roberto and Rigoberto (I think) kept them in line. The guides are soooooooo friendly and they are quite knowledgeable as well. they have good english and they love to share stories about when they were little and rode those grounds all day... very nice people and if you give them your camera, they'll stop everywhere to take good pictures of you. Ah.. and security is a big deal too... so you'll be safe!

Breakfast was delicious and plentiful and so was dinner and snacks. I was quite shocked when it was time to settle our bill, because it was $75 for two days of dinners, snacks, drinks, beers and other things we bought in the souvenir shop. quite good value! breakfast and dinner are buffet and they have a lot of options to choose from, even for vegetarians.

so basically... this is my overall review of this place:

Service: excellent. no complaint at all. It was kind of funny when having our meals because the waiters kept asking: "are you finished" and took the plates LOL but everyone there is sooo nice.

Value: great value!!!

Sleep Quality: amazing sleep, lovely afternoon naps, very comfy beds and pillows to rest after a long long day. All you can hear is animals, the wind and very rarely... other guests but please do watch the video I uploaded called: all you can hear... it was magical.

Cleanliness: everything was spotless clean!!!

Location: location is quite remote but you've got all you need in the grounds or just a little drive or walk away to the adventure centre where you there is a big shop and a restaurant. We are smokers and had to leave our tent, go down to the main entrance of the hotel and smoke there, it was quite nice... cause at night the moonlight was so bright that we could see the road and it was just great. the grounds are wild gardens with lots of flowers and trees and trails to walk on and wander around, you can't get lost as all trails are well marked and very safe too.

Rooms: they're tents, so don't expect luxury... but it is really nice.. watch my videos and you'll see :)

Overall, I only have one suggestion and one regret about this hotel:
Suggestion: maybe a swimming pool to cool down when it gets really hot
Regret: only spending two nights there... two more would have been nice :)

Definitely stay in the tents at this site for a great natural experience. Located in the forest the sounds of the wild animals, frogs and insects in the evening and the roars from the Growler Monkeys in the morning are just fantastic.
Just a short stroll across the open land across from the reception the trees were filled with a variety of toucans and other beautiful birds.
Zip wiring through the forest canopy is really awesome in this site a 20 min walk up the road.
The downsides are the limitation of the catering facility and the lack of a bar.
We stayed for 2 nights and that was ideal

Room Tip: Some of the tens are situated a long way from the catering area and so choose a low number (under 15...

My wife and I and two children shared a single tent with two double beds for one night. The rooms were comfortable and id include a fan and a full bathroom with a safe. Hot water was spotty due to reliance on solar while under the canopy of a rain forest! We did not eat there or spend a lot of time at the facility since we spent the day at La Paz waterfall about 45 minutes away. They do have a number of adventure offerings which we also did not participate in.

Room Tip: all rooms are similar

I was disappointed, not so much by the tents, which were, as others have said a little tired, but by the lack of animal life. Yes you can hear the monkeys, but were difficult to spot. There were not that many trails through the forest and again not that exciting. The gardens are ok and there were some lovely trees and birds.
The tents were very dark and as a consequence it was difficult to find things, so much so, 3 of our party left things behind.
The outside terrace was lovely and it was great sitting out in the evening listening to the sounds of the forest.
The breakfast was ok, but to eat in the evening you had to book in advance, which we did not do.
The activities were very well organised and I was given a huge amount of very kind support when Zip Lining. They were brilliant.

My husband and I, and our daughter, stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour of CR. We stayed in December and on arrival we were warned that there was a party in the restaurant that afternoon and that we may be disturbed!! The party kicked off at 3pm and although we had been told it would be finished by 6pm it was still going strong at 7pm, at which point we had to complain. We were told that this was an exception!! Well, given that we had picked Pozo Azul as we wanted the unique experience of staying in a rainforest in order to 'get close to nature' and enjoy the wild life I'm afraid that there should not be ANY exceptions!! If you choose to stay here, ask for a tent as far away from the restaurant as possible. The party completely ruined our afternoon, we tried to get away from the noise by going for a walk around the grounds but it was soooo loud - disco music etc. Def not what we were expecting. Shame, as the accommodation is quirky! and it could have been quite an experience. The next day was much better, just stay away from the restaurant!!

Room Tip: As far into the forest as possible - away from the restaurant and reception area.
