“A beautiful setting with stunning wildlife”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

We had a lovely two night stay here. Saw an amazing array of wildlife and enjoyed the accommodation, especially the lovely outside area with a hammock. I enjoyed a full body massage for fifty dollars which lasted a full hour and ten minutes. One of the best massages I have ever had!
Food was fine and the customer services were excellent.

We found this hotel comfortable, if rustic and our room was spacious. The grounds were large and interesting but rather run down. The butterfly sanctuary had few butterflies. There is so much potential here but some tender loving care is needed.
Breakfast was fine but supper left a lot to be desired. They tried but still served half-raw chicken (some had to be sent back twice or thrown away. The pool was nice.
The area is fantastic. We went white water rafting, visited a bat sanctuary and learned about cacao production (at a beautiful location).

Stayed 2 nights at La Quinta. We found the rooms in the semi-detached chalets to be comfortable and reasonably spacious which also included an outside sitting area.
An adequate breakfast was included in the rate whilst dinner was either a buffet or a snack-style
a-la-carte menu. We found the buffet very average but that the snack menu surprisingly good and well priced.
However, the main reason for visiting La Quinta is the wildlife. It has extensive grounds, attracting frogs, monkeys, reptiles and above all birds. La Quinta has installed a bird feeding station just outside the reception area which attracted a large number of colourful species including toucans, honeycreepers, woodpeckers and tanagers. With these birds used to human activity it was wonderful to observe them at a very close distance and take some memorable photographs.
Probably our best location for wildlife on our Costa Rican tour.

This is a quaint place which is ideal for those with a passion for birds in particular but also for monkeys and frogs.
The twin rooms are clean but basic with a rustic charm but totally adequate especially as most visitors are here I'd guess to view the wildlife. Air conditioning, room safe, shower and terrace are standard. A walkway is set up so you don't get wet going to the restaurant.
This was good though the buffet a little bland. Drinks prices are normal for costa rica and there is complimentary coffee and tea on all the time.
The grounds of the hotel incorporate a series of lakes, a river, butterfly enclosure, and a wide variety of costa rican plants and vegetation. Trail walks around the grounds are well laid out and quiet, especially first thing in the morning. A feeding station attracts a wide variety of beautiful birds enabling those close up photos. Our group was fortunate to have a swim when the howler monkeys visited and obtained some stunning close ups.
There is an area of habitat specifically to encourage frogs and a wide variety were seen regularly.
A couple of caiman reside in the lake.
The hotel is close to La Selva biological research station which is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Most rooms allocated to our party were good although there was a lot of road noise from the plantati...

You need to manage your expectations when staying here. It sells itself as an eco-tourism destination and it does a very good job of being one. If you're looking for five star luxury then you shouldn't come here. If you're here to view Costa Rica's wildlife and scenery with minimal impact on the environment then this hotel is probably the best compromise between comfort and facilities and eco-sensitivity. It's clean, everything works in the rooms, the grounds are fantastic (especially the bird feeding/viewing areas. Unfortunately it rained virtually 100% of the time we were there (even more than normal for this part of Costa Rica), meaning that everything was a bit gloomy and dark but in better weather the place would be ideal.

Food was OK but no more than that.

Staff were extremely helpful and there is lots of information available about the area, the wildlife and activities available

Although room was small, and we had to ask management to unscrew the windows so we could enjoy the breezes (we like fresh air rather than air conditioning), we enjoyed our stay. It was nice to read on the porch hammock, surrounded by vegetation and birds. Unfortunately, when it got dark there was a VERY bright light outside our window at night. Clearly the inn appeals to ecotourists with it large sitting room table filled with animal and plant ID books and a separate gallery with displays of beetles, moths and butterflies (wish they had been better labeled). The inn also has trails to explore, a butterfly garden with a walk-up viewing area, a frog pond, and every morning in the open public area fresh fruit is put out for the birds. The breakfast buffet had the regular scrambled eggs and fruit, but also pancakes for the Americans!

Room Tip: we were in back, so beware of large bright vapor lights

This hotel would get 4 stars if it had some updating done to it. It's a bit run down, but clean and has alot to offer. Trails, a river, pool, butterfly garden, ponds, etc. The food was very good at the restaurant.
