“A peaceful backwater”
Reviewed 11 August 2012

It is a petty that we only spent a night at Sueño Azul, as the place is worth stopping halfway between Arenal and Tortuguero. The country state is big and it offersthepossibility to hike, swim, to ride, relax.... It is a perfect place to enjoy nature. The facilities are good, but do not expect any luxury.

I really liked this place. Expansive, beautiful grounds. Large, very clean rooms. Good, central location for the best of the Sarapiqui region—Pacuare River rafting, Sarapiqui River rafting, La Selva Biological Reserve. Super nice staff (Carla, one of the wait staff, is an absolute doll). My one real complaint is the menu. Because of the hotel's remoteness, and the danger of driving in the area at night (because of very poorly marked roads, older windshield wipers on some rental cars, and unpredictable rains), you're kind of a captive audience for dinner. The current menu here (we stayed for 3 nights in July 2012) forces you to get the 4-course dinner for more than $18 USD per person. They don't give any other choices: no buffet, no a la carte. Since we were traveling with our kids, and wanted to be extra vigilant about potential food- and water-borne illnesses in the developing world, we didn't want most of their courses, most of the time, which consisted of things like salads and dairy-based cold desserts (about vigilance, I *did* get Salmonella a few nights earlier from a different hotel restaurant, so the concern is real). But still, even not wanting most of the courses, we had to pay full price per person. Long story short, one night we ended up paying $54 USD for 1 plate of chicken and vegetables and 2 plates of pasta carbonara. I repeat: $54 USD. That's quite a profit when the hotel's paying Third World wages and Third World prices for ingredients. And the food quality—honestly (this isn't sour grapes)—is just average. To add insult to injury, my kids wouldn't eat the pasta carbonara. That's not the restaurant's fault. But when I very nicely asked them if they wouldn't mind replacing the pasta with another dish, they said certainly: for another $18 USD each. Anyone else feel like cussing at this point? It shows nothing but greed, shortsightness, stupidity, and laziness on the part of the of the current owners. Until this resort, which has a TON of potential that unfortunately has not yet been realized (I have other reasons for saying that, as well, but no need to get into those reasons here), I HIGHLY recommend you spring for the nearby Selva Verde Lodge, if you can afford it. We had dinner there one night (despite the scary ride back to Sueno Azul afterwards) and toured the grounds. Selva Verde Lodge is vastly superior to Sueno Azul in every way. I wish we could get a do-over.

We were a little nervous when we got off our tour bus and had to walk across a suspended bridge in the dark and pouring rain to a path leading to the hotel. We didn't realize it, at the time, but our bus was too big to navigate the road to the main entrance and had to enter using a back entrance which was why we had to walk across the bridge. Once we got checked in and found our room, we were pleasantly surprised by the rustic elegance. There are no televisions or telephones but our room had a private terrace overlooking a small lake where we could sit in rocking chairs and watch the birds. We even saw a crocodile swimming by early one morning. Most of the rooms are connected by a covered walkway leading back to the lobby and restaurant - a nice thing if it's raining. The El Corral Restaurant is quite good and offers a buffet breakfast and dinner everyday. The Sueno Azul is a perfect place if you want to get away to rest and enjoy nature.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lake so you can watch for wildlife. Our room was not air conditioned...

Many, Many things to do and see at the resort. I think there are 2500 acres. Very bueatiful grounds, So many different kinds of birds and animals. Rain forest is right there. Serene. The owners and staff made us feel like family. the food was very good, and setting was perfect. Very relaxed just sitting in the rocking chairs after dinner overlooking the property. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and gave us personal attention.

This hotel was the perfect Costa Rican experience. I was a little worried, there was no air conditioning, no Tv, no phone...turned out to be a great visit. The hotel is located in a remote area, great for spotting wild life. It was great falling asleep to the sound of nature.
The food was great, and the staff very friendly.

We saw many beautiful birds at this resort as well as lizards, otters playing, and a variety of wildlife. Also heard lots of howler monkeys. The river is beautiful, and you can swim in it. There is also scope to walk quite extensively within and outside the resort grounds, and access to forest.
The grounds and gardens are beautifuly kept with the lake candle lit at dusk. The downside to so much water is that the mosquitos here were vicious!
The rooms were spacious and immaculate but rather dark. The food was mediocre although the restaurant and bar staff very helpful.
The previous review (my partner) has already commented on the down side to this trip which was the condition of the horses at the resort stable. We refused to ride although the tour had already been booked and paid for. The horses were all far too thin and the lead horses had horrid open sores from the saddle and bridle. Most horses we saw in CR were well kept, these were a disgrace.

Beautiful location. As soon as we arrived, saw otters fishing and playing in the river. Went swimming in the river which is part of the grounds, kingfishers flying all around and the mysterious sounds of the forest our soundtrack. Saw iguanas and toucans and all manner of beast that evening.

Room was big, but gloomy. Food was plentiful, but dull and overpriced. Staff were friendly. The rain forest trail was entertaining.

BUT we had a horse ride booked. On arriving at the stables, we were presented with pitiful and decrepit nags. The bones were sticking through their haunches, there were open sores around mouth and flanks. The alleged guide had spurs. Not only are they unnecessary, we saw plenty of locals riding without spurs, so it's not a cultural thing. if this resort makes such a song and dance about its commitment to wildlife, surely that care should extend to its own ani mals.
