“Great view if you get a window”
Review of Niesenbahn AG

Niesenbahn AG

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The restaurant/hotel at the top of the Niesen was built in 1856, 50 years before the funicular. In 2002 was the opening of the clear-cut, geometrically-designed and transparent restaurant pavillon to the public. The modern, functional architecture catches the eye and stands in contrast to the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains. Discover and enjoy the special atmosphere of the Niesen, its good food and fantastic alpine panorama.

“Great view if you get a window”
Reviewed 14 April 2013

The Niesenbahn is an engineering marvel. It can also be very very overcrowded. If you happen to get a full train you will not get to see the view. This is one of the few overrated tourist areas of the Oberland. The staff seem to think they are doing you a favour by letting to visit. Having been once will not bother again.

“Incredible experience”
Reviewed 12 August 2012 via mobile

We took the first funicular to the mid-point and then hiked up the second section (a second funicular to the top would have been available though), which took about 1h45'. The views were just amazing and it was a spectacular experience.

Once you reach the top you are able to see most of the world-famous Bernese Alps as well as the beautiful Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

Overall it was the best thing we did on our short trip to Switzerland. The funicular tickets are relatively cheap compared with more famous mountains such as Jungfrau and if you choose to go for the hike option like we did it gets even more affordable.

As this is a less known location (but equally beautiful) it also means fewer crowds at the top. I highly recommend this but obviously make sure to only go on a sunny day. It's easily reachable from Bern central station.

“Funicular ride to great view”
Reviewed 16 April 2012

The Niesen is an interesting mountain because it is shaped in the form of a pyramid. The Niesenbahn funicular was completed in 1910. Next to the funicular is the longest staircase in the world with 11 674 steps.
We went up to the middle station, Schwandegg. It took about 14 minutes and we traveled from 693m to 1669m above sea level. At this station we changed to the next funicular and traveled 12 minutes to the top station, Niesen Kulm ant 2336m above sea level. We walked to the viewpoint and at the top we were 2362m above sea level. Along the path there are information boards with facts about the history, flowers and animals of the mountain. Although it was cloudy and misty the views of the mountains, valleys and Thun Lake were incredible.
