This hotel is not much to look at but we got an itson deal so we gave it a go, room was a family room with a bed, pull out couch and chair, clean but tired and dated looking, a second door led out to a sloped lawn, but it seemed that most people used it for a cigarette break place, carpet was wet at this doorway, bathroom was spacious and well lit.
Food was overpriced and the selection was poor, dining rooms were quite dull and cold looking, overall experience was ok but nothing to rush back for, in fact we will not be back. Did not get my rose petals or chocolates in the room which were in the deal. I did complain but still got nothing, wine was pricey at £7.40 for a glass.
A positive point was that staff were friendly and helpful.

A funny place to stay. Nice location and nice rooms, but just doesnt seem to click if you know what i mean. Rooms are all over the place in seperate buildings. They had four staff down in the bar in the evening, but it took about 20 minutes per time to get a drink. Food in the restaurant was pretty good. We all thought that some of the staff seem a bit stand offish, and i get the impression some of them feel they are more important than they are. Remember who the paying guests are and you can only improve.

Recently had a great overnight on a Saturday here. The staff were really friendly and the room was comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed lounging about at the pool and taking advantage of the Spa. The massages were very good. The evening meal we had in the restaurant was superb along with a really nice bottle of wine. The hotel is really close to Uphall train station. A great place to relax.

Recently stayed for two nights in the Houston House.

Positives - brilliant facilities, pool, sauna, steam room, bar area, food and free cloud wifi all excellent surrounded in lovely gardens. Front desk very helpful and room service was quick and the food was lovely. I would say on the expensive side and it didn't state room service tray charge in the booklet, not that i noticed and i looked through it.

Negatives - The rooms i have to say very dated, i did ask for double room got a twin but thats no big deal as i was on my own if with partner i would of mentioned. Dont get be wrong nothing wrong with them just very dated an old which you may like. The rooms are clean, shower is powerful. has coffee and tea, the iron is awful so bring your own. Wifi was fine in my room. Heating you control yourself which was fine but smells a little.

All in all if you go for facilities then this is the place, but if your going for a lush room then this is not the place. I would go again if on my own for facilities but not sure if i would take my partner depends what she wants.

Lastly for the price its spot on

My wife stayed at the hotel on business 30 years ago and always wanted to take me there so I booked a three day break incorporating the Hogmanay evening as a surprise. Our room was quite comfortable but in need of some TLC, as are other parts of the hotel, but quite acceptable for a 3*+ hotel. As mentioned elsewhere, the Spa is more of a pool with sauna and steam room. Loads of broken lockers and again in need of TLC.

The food was of a good standard and the breakfast service was very efficient. Dinner was more of a lottery regarding speed and efficiency, but improved with some encouragement. Drinks are just that little bit more expensive than I think are justified, meaning that there is no incentive to push the boat out a bit.

In summary, we had a good time, mostly due to the people that we met at the Hogmanay Ball, but I get the feeling that they are trading a bit on former glory, but it's time to spend a bit of money on the décor, fixtures and fittings and show a bit of Scottish generosity. Restaurants have to move with the times and an amuse-bouche savoury and/or desert arriving unannounced adds considerably to your view of the meal. If the service is going to be slower due to the number of guests, a free glass of wine or discount on the drinks costs little and keeps the customers happy.

Room Tip: The main building is older but more convenient in the colder weather

Stayed over New Year 28/12/13 - 01/01/14 catalogue of disasters, reception messed up booking for New Years Eve dinner, great start. Breakfast first morning took 1.5 Hours to arrive, when we complained told by one memeber of staff the chef had walked out and that the oven had broken down by another, couldnt ever co-ordinate excuses!! When the food eventually arrived, the components were either burnt or cold. Also insufficient staff available to cope with the amount of guests, service was non-exisitent. Most guests either complained or walked out. Our Shower blocked and fillied up with toilet waste, (this was disputed by reception, even though no-one actually came to take a look or to clean up the mess, until the plumber had attended the following day!) we had to shower and use toilet facilities in another room for a day, until a plumber could be located.
The reception roof leaked in two places when it rained and a huge bubble threatened to burst at any time but no-one seemed to worry.
I complained by E mail to both Mr Donald Macdonald (CEO) and Mr David Guile (Head of Customer Services) and neither have afforded me the courtesy of a reply.
Needless to say that after many years of using Macdonald Group Hotels I shall be taking my cutom elsewhere in the future.

Dear Mr Gregory,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I am very sorry to read of your disappointment of your recent visit and please accept my sincere apologies. We did experience faulty kitchen equipement on your first breakfast with the resulting delay you suffered. This was unacceptable and breakfast was not charged that morning.

I trust the rest of your visit was enjoyed and it was a pleasure to speak to you during your stay and wish you Festive greetings.

Unknown to us, there was a crushed waste pipe by your room, this has now been repaired.

Feedback is very a valuable way for us to monitor our operation and make improvements where necessary and we acknowledge all correspondence and apologise for any delay in coming back to you.

When you are next planning a break away, simply contact me personally on 0844 879 9043 option 3 or by email gm.houstounhouse@macdonald-hotels.co.uk when I will be happy to organize your reservation and make it memorable for all the right reason.

We chose this hotel because of the location ( handy for motorway and railway station) and were delighted .
We didn't venture beyond the lounge area beside reception but were impressed by the stunning, historic building and the beautiful grounds.
We had excellent coffee, tea and freshly made shortbread but the best bit was the helpful and attentive staff team.

Planning to return shortly for lunch and looking forward to it.
