“Close to the penguins and albatross colony”
Reviewed 17 February 2014 via mobile

Nice comfortable and spacious units. A charming location on the Dunedin harbor, 20 min from the town center. Keith and Sue are most gracious hosts
Close to the Albatross Center, penguins and spectacular hiking trails. Would have liked to spend more than 1 night here

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and also for mentioning the great walking in the area. There are quite a few lovely tracks either on the beaches or on the hills. Often seals and sea lions can be seen on the beaches too, making it a double pleasure!

Please stay longer if you come again and explore some more!

Kind regards,

Sue and Keith

We stayed two nights and wished we had planned a longer stay. The units are very nice, clean and comfortable. Cars can be parked just outside the unit. The kitchen had everything we needed and the bed was very comfortable. The location is ideal for exploring the Otago Peninsula, especially the nearby Albatross Centre, Blue Penguin night tours, Yellow-eyed Penguin colony and Monarch cruise from Weller's rock. We had a view of the bay. Keith and Sue were very helpful with advice on tours, food etc. For us it was a beautiful part of our self-drive tour but it would also be a lovely place to spend a week.

Such a lovely place. Attractive outside and inside. Really lovely décor; extremely well- equipped and very practically laid-out kitchen. Scrupulously clean. There is good heating, if needed. Views from the motel are great. The hosts are so friendly and nice - and so helpful. The Otago Peninsula is a great place to visit and the attractions one comes to see are quite handy to get to from the Portobello Motel. The little village is cute and there is a wonderful restaurant there plus a couple of good cafes if you want to eat out. We'd stay there again!

Room Tip: Rely on where the hosts puts you. It's so beautifully situated - anywhere is good!

Thank you for your very complimentary review. Keith and I are delighted you were so pleased with your accommodation and the ambience of the motel.

The fish and chips are indeed excellent!! Portobello has most things to sustain life.

It's lovely to hear that when our guests take full advantage of everything on offer around the Peninsula they leave with happy memories of a very pretty and wonderful location.

Thanks again.

Kind regards,

Sue and Keith

We stayed 2 nights in a studio with the most fantastic view over the water at Portobello. The studio was spacious, clean and comfortable and the wifi worked well. I can also recommend the fish and chip shop at the end of the drive. Excellent value for money all round.
The Otago Peninsular is beautiful and we enjoyed watching lots of albatross at the Albatross Colony but were very disappointed at Penguin Place where, despite being charged full price, and being assured we would see lots of penguins, the only ones we saw were in a concrete area which constituted the 'hospital'.

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra for a view over the water.

Thank you for your review. We're delighted to know that you found your accommodation to be of a good standard.

We sympathise with your frustration at not seeing any yellow-eyed penguins on the day you visited the centre. Wildlife is notoriously unreliable and comes and goes at will. We would recommend to future guests booking their tours ahead, to aim for late afternoon viewings if at all possible as this time of day can be better.

The little Blue penguins are the most reliable...turning up at Pilot's beach in droves at night and haven't let us down yet!

I hope it didn't spoil your stay on the Peninsula too much.

Thanks again for staying with us.

Kind regards

Like a few recent posters, we chose this Hotel based on its ranking on
TripAdvisor. My wife and mother joined me in staying in a 2 bedroom cottage which was spacious and clean. Our dealings with the staff were always pleasant and friendly. One word of advice is if you are using a GPS to find the motel make sure it takes you around the bays instead of over the hill as one is a lovely scenic drive, the other is slow and annoying.

Thank you for your comments!!

The scenic drive over the hills can be slow but very beautiful provided you're not arriving in the dark or low cloud! GPS 's unfortunately will direct you this route. We know not why when the harbourside route is easier.

We're pleased you found the accommodation to your satisfaction and look forward to meeting you again before too long!

We picked the Portobello because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor and we certainly were not let down. We were on our first trip to NZ from Western Australia and had no real idea what to expect. The drive out along the bay from Dunedin is amazing if a bit heart in mouth. The location, layout & grounds of the motel are extremely well done. and the friendliness and hospitality shown by the owners is as good i've found anywhere. There is a great choice of places to eat almost at the front door, from a Fush 'n Chups shop to a traditional pub which serves up top nosh and a restaurant that offers true fine dining.
One of the highlights of the area is Larnach Castle, high on a hill above the town a breathtaking drive up, a magnificently restored monument to rich banker's ego, great food and then an equally wonderful drive down the other side of the hill.
We only had time to scratch the surface but if wer're ever back in that part of the world you'll see us there for an extended stay - 6 out of five!
And Keith, keep the laundry going.

Room Tip: Try and get one of the west facing rooms - Warm afternoon sunshine and a balcony for your "Sund...

Many thanks! 6 out of 5 is about as good as it gets!!

It's great when we are told we have met our guests' expectations. We endeavor to do that consistently.

We're so glad you enjoyed all that the peninsula and Portobello had to offer. For a small village it does pretty well..especially the different food outlets.

Thanks again and we hope to see you again before too long.

Stayed for 2 nights in a studio with a view of the waterfront and surrounding countryside from our balcony. Beautiful!

The quality, cleanliness and specification of the studio was excellent. And the owner/manager was very friendly and helpful.

We were issued with codes for the wifi which worked perfectly.

The Otago peninsula is a great place to stay. A definite recommend.
