“Our Holiday at Le Moulinal”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

Very clean and relaxing place to stay. Great fun for the kids (ours aged 8, 9, 15 years). Slides fun and not long queues. The lake adds an additional swimming adventure and helps to make the location more beautiful and relaxing. The cabin (6 - 8 birth top of the range) was smaller and more basic than we expected as it was really a static caravan - however, its position and setting turned out to be very peaceful and provided everything we needed. Even though the campsite is busy it is peaceful. Thoroughly recommend. All in all all 6 of us (aged 49, 47, 15 x 2, 9 and 8) all rated their holiday 8 - 10 out of 10!!!!!!!! Tres bon.

3 minor complaints - staff at restaurant need to be more friendly - one night our waitress was the most miserable person you could ever come across (although the food was good). Secondly, the bar service, although good, it is sometimes undermanned leaving one member of staff to do too much. Finally, come on camping Le Moulinal management, you try and sleep on the disposable bed sheets and pillow cases your provide. At your prices you should provide cotton sheets as standard issue. Unless they change their policy, we recommend you bring your own bed sheets as makes it expensive to hire these.

Just passed a very pleasant few days at Moulinal in south Dordogne. We camped in a folding camper but also on site are a good selection of 'log cabin' / chalet' holiday homes (looked inside one and they seemed on the small side but the weather was so good when we stayed that it's unlikely many people would want to stay inside for long). We came with my sister & family who brought a larger 6-birth caravan. The pitches are not really designed for these UK vans and are generally on the small side all round - manoeuvrability was a bit of a problem - make sure to make a point to ask for one of their larger pitches if you've got a bigger van - don't just rely on giving your dimensions. Apart from the bijou size most pitches have a good degree of shade and so no problems with the sun or privacy.

La Moulinal is very much a 'French' site with only a small splattering of English when we stayed (not great if you've got none French speaking kids who like to make friends). They didn't have much by way of english information about the site but with that said it was easy enough to get by. We found the site really friendly and well cared for - certainly good for family holidays. The staff really made an effort and the evening entertainments were very jolly. On the whole the site felt safe and was mostly quiet (except for a pack of dogs that regularly began howling at just before six in the morning) - sounded like hunting hounds kennelled nearby but I could be wrong. The pool complex is clearly the jewel in the crown of this site with good slides, pool and decking areas - combine this with an on-site lake (with small manmade beach) for swimming or inflatables - plus the potential to use a small selection of hireable paddle-craft - and you've got a really nice campsite. This is a good job because there's nothing much to do in the area. There is a small camp shop, restaurant (menu attached in photos), and a few other bits but basically you're on your own. We went tree climbing which was nearby but all the really good stuff was further north. Even the nearest decent supermarket was 20 or so minutes away.

OK - so why not five stars? Here are the down sides - the toilet / wash facilities were just a little bit too rustic for 5-*'s. e.g. no loo seats - toilet paper (when available) outside the unisex cubicles, showers that were at best ok and a urinal that didn't work whilst we were there (with that said everything was clean). The wi-fi (which was free at the bar) was patchy. The pitches were too small and the lack of other entertainment in the area all added up to not quite being able to give the perfect score but nothing really to put you off. Definitely add it to your 'one to consider' list if you're looking in the area. Oh, avoid arriving on a Saturday afternoon if at all possible!!!
