“The No. #1 Pit Stop on Kandy Road”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

Ambepussa Avanhala (stands for canteen in the Sinhala language) is visibly the most popular pit stop on the Kandy Road in Sri Lanka. Many have tried but failed to capture this opportunity. Perera & Sons nearby has edged closer but the future of how this restaurant is managed will decide on its position as the number one!

To begin with, this is managed by Galle Face hotel thus you can expect some standards. It is the cynosure on your drive along this road and the vehicles pulling in and out bear witness to its popularity. Two security guards are placed on the roadside parking so your pulling in and out are responsibly guided for your safety and convenience while ensuring the safety of your ride while you relax inside.

The interior is clean and the design contributes towards a relaxing and comfortable stop over. Restrooms are clean and you are required to pay a nominal fee if you are not a restaurant customer. My favorite is their stuffed capsicum and kids would love the marshmallows cut in uniquely large squares! Many love their milk tea but I would prefer if they used fresh milk instead of the powdered variety.

They serve a popular breakfast buffet with a selection of traditional items on the table. You really cannot find a better service so early on the road. Lunch is not my favorite but dinner is probably better. They run out of the hot selling short eats at times but you get your reward the next time around.

Weekends are busy woth local and foreign travellers heading to and back from their weekend escapades. There is a three-piece Calypso band in attendance on the weekends and they always succeed in extending my pitstop by at least thirty minutes.

While the Avanhala is your choice for a quick stop over, their sister property across the road named Heritage Ambepussa provides a quieter and laid back aura. There is an amateur flute player perched atop the tree house and he never fails to fill your soul with a soothing melody! I always give him a tip for the melodious gift in return.

“Crowded but Good”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

This is a restaurant on the Colombo / Kandy / Anuradhapura main road. It tends to be crowded because of the location, but really worth a stop. The best is the breakfast buffet with a large spread. The hoppers are very very delicious and soft. The tea served here is very good.

“Eating and stopping by at Ambepussa”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

We always stop by here when we go on trips. I just wish they always had all the short-eats especially the stuffed peppers which is our favourite. The drinks, tea and other food items are delicious.
We like the washroom facilities and it a good place to stop by.
