My friend and I stayed in this wonderful place for five nights in April. We had chosen the optimum quality room here as we wanted to be as comfortable as possible during our stop-over in Borneo while we travelled around various bits of Malaysia and visiting friends in Perth, Australia. This is not a cheap option by any means but, boy, you get what you pay for! The rooms themselves are divine, huge, beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and the balconies are seriously large, with lovely views out over the (gorgeous and exclusive to Ocean Wing guests) swimming pool and further out to the Indian Ocean...the bathroom and l'Occitane complimentary toileteries didn't go down badly either, and neither did the fresh fruit every day, complimentary water and, wait for it, scent menu!! You left a note each evening as to which scent you wanted to be pervading the room on your return from dinner...you could choose from jasmine, frangipani etc...divine. The resort itself is gorgeous, especially the Ocean Wing section; there's a dedicated reception for guests in this section and we were checked in on arrival in our room; the staff are amazingly attentive, professional and helpful. There was nothing that was too much trouble and we found the entire experience sublime. The pool itself is perfect, not too deep, but deep enough to be able to swim properly; fabulous 'cabana' type of sunbathing structures, as well as the usual (very comfortable) 'ordinary' sun beds (we had two of these on our balcony, too, along with the outdoor bath...you have to do this at least once! There ARE shutters which come down at the press of a button to afford privacy - divine!

In the main hotel, there's a great shop and compliementary wi-fi access (several terminals to choose from in a little room - we never had to queue), and the quality of the five restaurants on site were wonderful too. The only 'complaint' we had was that the vegetarian options were somewhat limited in a couple of them but we find that everywhere we travel throughout the world, so this place shouldn't be singled out, unfairly. We adored it. You get what you pay for and, for a special treat in a beautiful place, you can't beat it. If wecould be transmitted through the airwaves and cope again with the 14 hour flight back to KL and then another few hours onto Sabah, we'd bethere tomorrow! (Volcanic ash clouds permitting, of course.)

This is a really lovely hotel, in a tranquil, remote location. OK if that's what you're looking for, but limits here you can eat for example. There are an array of restaurants on offer, however, I was shocked as the prices were equivalent to London! That said, the food was always very good quality and there are lots of restaurants to choose from.

The beach did not have any sandflies however, jelly fish were a slight problem. The service around the pool was excellent.

The "be aware of" points:
1) The pool by the ocean wing is for ocean wing guest only which is not promoted at time of booking. Whilst my initial thought was one of annoyance, the main pool was spectacular. I was concerned about the large childrens section but this didn't really cause a problem. However....

2) The pool area away from childrens section is very quiet, but at 2.2 mtrs deep, is VERY DEEP! Please let this be a warning to anyone who cannot swim or is not a confident swimmer. The lifeguards are not as attentive to the 'adult' end as they are in the 'child' end.

Not for everyone but if you do want a resort experience in the KK area this one is hard to beat.

Staying in the Ocean wing makes quite a difference but not as much as other Shangri-La resorts. The decor is of the usual high standard and rooms very pleasant to spend time in when the sun get too much

We stayed here as our first stop on a 3 week honeymoon. After travelling for so long it was perfect that we were taken straight from our taxi to the room and proceeded to check in whilst exploring the room. The cold towels and cold drink, presented to us in the room, were very nice and set the standard for the week ahead.
The Ocean Wing room was amazing, with plenty of room, a great balcony (day bed and bath), a very comfortable bed and a massive bathroom. The view from the balcony of the sun setting each day was magical.
The food in the resort was of a very high standard and catered for everyone. We especially liked the Japanese restaurant for food and entertainment.
We also had a romantic dinner in a beach gazebo which was amazing and highly recommenend for a special occasion.
Although we could not swim in the sea, due to the jellyfish, the beach was very beautiful and great for leisurely walks. The Ocean wing pool was very quiet and the staff were very friendly. The free iced water helped to cool us down during the day.
You can reduce your spending by taking advantage of the happy hours, when drinks are reduced by 30%.
