Ae here the other night with relatives. I don't normally choose to eat steak but the fillet steak here was absolutely delicious. I would certainly go back. We were well served and people from a neighbouring table bought us a gentziana to finish our meal. Everyone here in Manoppello is so friendly.

On a recent brief to trip to Abruzzo to visit friends, we were told of this unique restaurant that appears to combine a quality butcher with a fantastic quality restaurant. Contadino means peasant in Italian, but this is not peasant food. The owner keeps his own animals and according to our friend Donato, who is a restaurateur and no mean judge of food, he is an expert in the selection and preparation of meat. And so it proved...We started with mixed antipasti, which were delicious and varied, followed by gnocchi with duck sauce or chitarra (a local version of spaghetti named after guitar strings) with porcini mushrooms. The pasta was cooked to perfection, al dente and with just enough resistance without being undercooked or stiff at the centre. Then, the main event: fillet steaks with green peppercorn sauce, accompanied by potatoes, chips and fried chicory (not nearly as strange as it sounds). The steaks were tender, with a hearty pink centre and full of flavour. Absolute heaven! Washed down with a bottle of Tullum wine, and then desserts which were beautifully crafted. Donato's partner, Giovanna, makes the world's best Tiramisu, with not too much sweetness and the subtle flavour of mascarpone not being masked by too much cream - but here they served a version of this classic dessert which was almost as good.

All the while, the owner was checking that we were having a good time without fussing, insisting that we tried his special hazelnut icecream of which he was justly proud, and then popping back to his butchers block to cut up more meat. I have never before eaten in a restaurant where you can see the raw materials of your forthcoming meal so clearly being prepared, but it wasn't gory or in any way distasteful; quite the reverse - it felt that the meat was being treated with reverence and respect for its quality. A truly memorable evening and at €130 for the 4 of us, not at all expensive given the high quality of the food served. Well worth seeking out.

The meat was high-quality. The 'al sangue' cooking wasn't really it at all, but although mishandled, the fillet was still soft and juicy. The roast vegetables were perfectly cooked, in line with the tradition but not broken down by the cooking oil as it too often happens.

The atmosphere is of course unsettling, and so is the location, a couple of yards from a highway. The service is in line with the nature of the restaurant, simple but efficient.

The 'Osteria del Contadino' is worth a try. An affordable and rewarding meal.
