“A lovely spa day”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

We visited as spa day guests and had a lovely time enjoying the facilities. We'd spent 4 nights int the great outdoors, so a warm sauna, steam and swim was just what we needed.

The spa is spotless and great value - they had lots of fruit tea, fruit juices and fresh fruit to enjoy. We only had time for a few hours relaxation (we had to dash to Stockholm for our flight), but we loved our time there.

The grounds themselves are also stunning - we visited on a crisp, sunny autumn afternoon and really enjoyed a relaxing walk around the gardens and Victorian buildings.

We were told how special Farna Herrgard was by a long time Swedish friend and we were not in the least disappointed! Farna is an 18th century Swedish country house that is situated about 200k outside of Stockholm, we combined our visit with a short stay in Stockholm. The drive to Skinnskatteberg is beautiful and you get to see the country side and many beautiful lakes on the drive there. We stayed in one of the cottages which was simply furnished and very comfortable, it consisted of a sitting room, bathroom and a bedroom, so we had plenty of space and you could easily sleep 3 there if required. The grounds are beautiful and there is lots to do, we went mushroom picking in woods close by and used the spa, the pool is very warm and the treatments excellent (fantastic back massage and facial). I believe there is lots to do in all seasons including cross country skiing, and hunting. There is a lot to Farna that I loved and don't know where to start. All the food is truly excellent, there is a huge Swedish buffet breakfast to choose from and all good, including excellent scrambled eggs and bacon (which you do not get in every hotel, why is it lots of hotels can't seem to cook scrambled eggs?). We missed lunch, but just as well as I managed to try three types of cake at tea time and if I had room I would have tried more, all so good. We had two dinners there and both were equally good, the first night Pike Perch with a delicious dill sauce and very lean tender lamb on the second night. All perfectly cooked, starters and deserts were also good. Service was excellent, and ALL the staff helpful and friendly. After dinner we retired to the bar which is situated at the top of the house, where everyone seemed to be having a good time. I certainly would recommend Farna to anyone who wants a real Swedish country style experience, it beautiful.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back of the house in a cottage, very quiet and comfortable.

We chose Farna as one of a choice in a gift box. We stayed saturday to sunday. The area is very pretty, and we were lucky enough to have fantastick weather. We were first given a very small room with a view of a car park. We actually asked for a better view, and were able to change rooms. The next room in the Spa house was much better and bigger.
The service is perfect, the staff are really lovely.
We didn't use the spa ( weather was top good) but enjoyed the walk in the grounds and coffee in the garden. The afternoon tea looked really good, but we saved our apetite for the dinner.
The food was good, well presented. The wine packet is to be recomended. Our male waiter gave great service and was very friendly.
Quite comfortable beds.
Good breakfast.
We had a lovely time

We visited this hotel as part of a 70th birthday celebration and it proved to be a very pleasant experience. The hotel is somewhat isolated and in snowy Sweden in Feb this may not be for everyone. However, for those with a liking for the outdoors there was plenty of space to walk or cross-country ski in and there were plenty of activities on site, The pool was popular with the younger members of the party and the afternoon tea was a hit with all ages. The rooms were comfortable although not the largest we have stayed on.

The area and surroundings are nice and are situated on the Swedish country side. The mansion house and buildings around gives a nice impression upon arrival. The reception area is in the main building that consists of the breakfirst, lunch, dining and bar area together with 8 single occupancy rooms. The interior is a mix from different periods but somehow it works. It is a three floor mansion house with the reception area and breakfirst/lunch room on the first, the dining room on the second an a bar och the top floor. I you have double occupany or a suite you will stay in one of the side buildnings. So when booking make sure that you get a clear understanding of where and what roomtype you get since the rooms are quite different. The SPA is also in a separate building down by the water stream approx 100 meters from the main buildning. Upon arrival we where welcomed by the receptions staff that where nice and helpful. We where placed in the (Post building), room 403 which was a corner room with a view over the water. The room had quite old but coozy interior and was clean and nice. The beds where ok and we had a good night sleep. The bathroom where somewhat a disapointment (other people had the same opinion) that had plastic floors, white tiles and where very "not mansion like".
In the package we bought (1 night/day) was included lunch on arrival day, full access to the new built and renovated SPA (also had a basic gym), afternoon tea, dinner and a 50 minutes SPA treatment all at a very reasonable price. The buffet lunch was basic and could have been a little bit more upscale but tasted ok. The lunch area (also for breakfirst and afternoon tea) was quit boring and needs an update like cloth on the table, same candle lights and an updated set of flowers and plants. The staff was nice but had a hard time to answer questions about what was served. The afternoon tea was only some small cookies and pastry that could have been presented in a nicer way but at least it seemed to been home made. The dinner area is nicer and the atmosphere is warm. The staff is nice, observant and knowledgable. The dinner was a three course menue and a recommended wine package could be included. The food was good but not great. The recommended wines where however very good.

The SPA area includes a pool with very warm water and relax areas (nice!) a sauna (ordinary and we had to ask them to put it on), a shop, threatment rooms and a small basic gym. There is also a SPA suite with a private steam sauna, jaccuzzi and haman stone bed as well as a relax area. This can be rented per hour and looked really nice, Perfect for some quality privacy. The SPA threatment which was included in the price was really nice and can be highly recommended.

Overall we had a nice stay but the concept needs some refinement as well as some additional touch and changes to the interior and atmosphere in order to move up the value chain. There is a lot of competition in this space and in order to be more competitive improvments are needed in order not to be average. If you have your ways around don't hesitate to stay there for a night or two but do some inquiry selecting the room to maximize your experience.
