A very fun trip from start to finish. We took the Luxe version with Soltour and had a mini river cruise before travelling to the island. This was a pleasant addition as you get to see a very different type of landscape, lush greenery and mountains.
The trip over to the island is lovely (speedboat on the way there, catamaran on the way back) - wasn't too keen on the stop to see the starfish (too many boats for my liking) however you forget that part once you get to the island which is lovely. Just the idyllic setting you would expect from a Caribbean holiday, very different beach to Bavaro which is where we were staying.
Lunch was fine, nothing amazing but adequate and as with every trip in DM, there was plenty of rum going around. Plenty of space to lie around and chill and about 3 hours at the beach. We went for a walk to the far end of the beach and felt like we'd seen a lot more than others who just stayed put. Word of warning though - I was covered in mosquito bites by the end of the day.
The catamaran trip on the way back was great fun, with members of the crew dancing merengue and other typical dances and picking out other daytrippers to join them.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable day :)

Hi All,
My husband and I took a trip over to Saona Island and were sadly disapointed. It is not the untouched beauty that they make it out to be. The beach that the tour took us to was littered with plastic lawn chairs, man made structures, peddlers and garbage. We felt like the price was expensive, and our own resort beach was nicer. They are distroying a beautiful thing. We were at an Island several years ago by St. Croix and you had to take everything off the island that you brought there. It had to be left as natural as possible. We thought that was how Saona Island would be and it is far from that. I will only give this trip to the island 2 out of 5 as the ride over was nice.

The excursion to Isla Saona was so amazing. We had a bus ride from our hotel and met up with a bus that took us to a marina at the Parque Nacional De Este. We got on a catamaran and drank Cuba Libre and Santo Libre. The crew were a lot of fun, had us help get the sail up and dance and drink some more. We had a funny tour guide, Papa Raymond. Once we got to the island we had a few hours to enjoy the water and beach. We had more drinks and a traditional Dominican lunch. After the beach we got on a speed boat and headed to a natural pool to look for starfish. On the way there three dolphins came up by our boat so we stopped to watch them for a while. At the natural pool we swan around looking for starfish. Loved this part, we had a short stop because a storm was coming in but as we were leaving we found a sting ray which was really cool. If you like beautiful beaches, swimming, and drinking this is a great tour. If you are more interested in the culture of the Dominican Republic you may or may not get much insight depending on your tour guide. We loved it and really enjoyed all the new things we were able to experience.

We did a full day excursion to Saona Island and I am glad we did
For $99 per person, we got a 2 hour catamaran cruise to the island with bar, 3 hours of time on the island with lunch and bar, a speed boat ride back with a pit stop to a sandbar full of starfish
It was a great way to spend the day and enjoy the scenery outside of the resort. Would recommend!

On Friday, 10/25/13, we as a family (19 of us) took the excursion to the Isla Saona; well worth the $80. It was an all day affair, leaving at 8am and returning to our hotel at 7pm. We traveled by bus to park that was not far from Haiti in one direction and Venezuela in the other direction. Once we got there we got on a speed boat to go to the island. If you ever want to see some of the prettiest blue water you've ever seen this is a trip you should take if you ever go to Punta Cana. We swam/waded in what they call the swimming pool prior to going to the island but once we were on the island it was beautiful. Make sure you have water proof insect repellent because the mosquitoes are atrocious. The natives of the island had cooked us lunch and I have to admit that it was very good and tasty. We stayed on the island for about 3 hours and actually swam in the ocean. On the way back we left by speed boat but got on a catamaran in the middle of the ocean and had a good time partying with the crew and drinking plenty of rum. If I return to Punta Cana, DR again, I will definitely take that excursion again. RECOMMEND THIS EXCURSION TO ANYONE THAT DON'T GET SEA SICK.
