“Surprisingly Nice Pub and an Excellent Dinner”
Reviewed 14 April 2013

Arriving late on our first day in a rented cottage in nearby Duns, we were stuck for what to do about dinner. We aimlessly explored the surrounding area and came across a brown sign pointing us here.

Unassuming from the outside, once you enter the pub you find a cosy, stylishly decorated bar and a nice comfortable looking restaurant. We got a warm welcome and friendly service. As for the food - it's very good. Carefully and imaginatively prepared and expertly cooked. The menu is short but pleasingly varied. A little on the expensive side perhaps, but very good value for money, nevertheless. We'd be very happy to treat ourselves to a return visit!

Having been before, some nine months ago we revisited the restaurant.
The sign of a good place is in the consistency.
We found on this occasion the service was again first class, the staff helpful and conscientious without being overbearing.
The food was superb, the ambience excellent and the décor tasteful.
Overall a pleasant experience which will see us return and recommend to friends

We stayed for 2 nights in August 2012. We arrived on a Friday night, when the pub was very busy - great atmosphere. We were shown to our room, which was on the small side but very clean and had views over the beer garden and countryside beyond. Bathroom was very small, but had everything you needed. As we did overlook the beer garden and were above the kitchen, you couldn't keep your window open for the smells from the kitchen extractor fan. Maybe a room overlooking the street would have been better.

Breakfast was really good - highlight for me, was the fresh honeycomb, what a nice treat having honeycomb that looked like it came straight from the hive for breakfast with fresh fruit and yoghurt. The full Scottish breakfast was fantastic too!

Stayed here for one night unexpected. The room was fantastic, very spacious and comfortable. The Inn does great food both evening meals and breakfasts and the bar was vibrant and friendly. A nie touch was the fresh milk that I was offered for making tea in my room which is alwaysan improvement on UHT.
Although this was a business stop over, I found the village and locality very beautiful with loads of interesting walks and fascinating local history (including the Blackadder family residence ruins). A nice touch was the information folder in the room which provided loads of snippets of local history. I will be returning to the Borders and would definitely stay there during a romantic break with my wife next time. Thank you Katrina for making me feel welcome and relaxed.

Stayed here with work, very impressed. Top notch food, great value and fantastic gin collection. There a little touches here there and everywhere which make it good. For some reason and I don't no why I did struggle to get a good night sleep and not sure why and that stops me giving the 5 stars

Stayed here for two nights in February. Booked family room which was excellent - consisted of two separate bedrooms with shared bathroom all behind our own front doors. Very spacious and comfortable. Tea making facilities and large tv in both rooms was good. The food was very good - def restaurant not pub food, which presented a challenge to my daughter - however everything we tried was good, and the steak was reportedly "fantastic" Breakfast too was excellent - self service for cereal juice fruit etc with cooked breakfast cooked to order and served at table. Hosts were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about area. Short drive to Holy Island and Bamburgh which are worth a visit.

Stayed here for 2 nights 1-3 March. We had a warm welcome from the owner, William, who showed us to our delightful room which was comfortable, tastefully decorated and furnished. We had excellent dinners both nights we were there featuring local meat, fish and terrific cheese (try the Roxburgh Roondie). Breakfasts were also very good indeed with plenty of toast, fine kippers, bacon, sausages, black pudding etc. and perfectly cooked eggs. Local honey was also delicious. The draught beer in the bar was moreish and there was a superb display of malt whiskies and an amazing selection of gins (not all tried!). The wines we tried were first class and reasonably priced given the quality. Finally all who served us were pleasant, courteous and helpful. All in all a fine weekend. Thanks also to Katrina and William for the cheese they gave us to take home.
