Stayed here over the weekend with my husband. As we are well travelled & not impressed by pretence and grandeur we were fearing that the rave reviews were merely from people caught up in an " emperor's new clothes" sort of scenario. On the Friday we chose the 3 course dinner menu - so good we thought we might repeat our choices on the following evening however we were so pleased that we had opted for the tasting menu instead - the only other time we have had a tasting menu we were left hungry and disappointed - not on this occasion the food was exquisite - have never experienced anything like it anywhere - we were overwhelmed - it was outstanding. If you have the opportunity to visit then you should go.

My wife and I had dinner here in June 2013 and thought the food was fantastic. This time we were disappointed and felt the food was not nearly so good as it had been the previous year. An exception was the sourdough bread, which was magnificent. The portions are very small, even by the standards of fine dining restaurants. Service is good and friendly. The wine list is very reasonably priced

We had asked for a table in the conservatory (with views of Skiddaw) on booking but, as we had been warned, none was available when we arrived. We were impressed and pleased to be moved into the conservatory half way through our meal.

We had the Taste menu with two glasses and a bottle of wine, at a cost of £160. This is expensive for the standard of food on offer.

Would definitely recommend eating here. From booking to leaving the whole experience is wonderful. When booking I was asked about special dietary requirements & my request was met with subtly. A parking space was reserved right by the front door due to mobility issues & on a previous visit, we were welcomed through the door directly into the dinning area, again for easy access. The staff are polite & welcoming without being overbearing at the table, I appreciated how they explained the dishes detailing the flavours & Ingredients. The lunch menu had 2 choices for each coarse, with no main vegetarian option hence 4 stars, one member of my party didn't want either of the 2 main dishes but on asking was offered 2 other choices, which for me was excellent service, but if 3 choices had been available on the menu that issue could possibly been avoided. Each course was delicious & beautifully presented. Wheelchair access is good throughout, from access into the restaurant, lounge & toilet. Highly recommended.

We decided to visit after enjoying a demo by the Head Chef Ryan Blackburn at the Taste Cumbria Food Festival in September 2013 .
Unfortunately as we were booking we learned that Ryan had left to start his own business in Ambleside. The reports of the new Head Chef and the continuing high standard of the food , accommodation , service etc however made us decide to go ahead with the visit -- what a good decision !!
The four of us had the Tasting Menu - three accompanied by the Wine Flight. Not cheap by any standards but absolutely excellent in all respects.
By way of a bonus the breakfast the next morning was also brill !!
Can't speak too highly of the staff and location .

This was our first visit and the whole experience was impressive - very friendly, knowledgeable staff, well presented and executed imaginative food, delicious breakfasts all in a stunning location. I wish we lived nearer and could visit more often.
