This hidden gem advertises itself as a 'restaurant with rooms' but we found it to be so much more than that. We were looking for a special place to spend a birthday. Looking at the menus on the website and reading the reviews we thought the Taster Menu with the 'Wine Flight' looked amazing - so we decided to book in for the night as well.

It nestles in the heart of Whinlatter Forrest just a few minutes drive from Keswick. On arrival we were very warmly greeted and offered help to carry in our bag. We were shown to a smallish but beautifully designed and decorated room and were told that complimentary tea and cake was waiting for us downstairs.

The tea was fresh leaf tea, the coffee locally roasted and the coffee and walnut cake delicious. The lounge was relaxing with books and games to enjoy.

Dinner was served inn the conservatory overlooking the valley with bird tables and red squirrel feeders evident through every window.

We started with an aperitif and Amuse Bouche, and then followed with an amazing meal of Strawberry gazpacho with black pudding and croutons, Duck terrine wrapped in Cumberland ham, King scallops on a bed of satay with lime and coriander, Lamb perfectly cooked and presented in different ways; a delicious local cheese board, Tiramisu and lastly a dessert of coconut, mango and passion fruit - all served with some really interesting wines.

Breakfast the next morning was also wonderful with huge glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice and old fashioned thickly (very thick!) cut slices and white and brown toast along with delicious granola and perfect kippers served with a poached egg - could not be bettered!

The food, the wines, the attention to detail, the understated elegance and the outstanding service from every member of staff made this a truly memorable experience and I can say that this was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I am not always so over-board with my praise but this was really outstanding!

Everything was perfect. The setting glorious. The food is stunning and the service could not be faulted. Additional benefit of great company of another couple to end the evening. A truly superb place. Don't miss it. Don't hesitate. Go!

We were down in the Lake District for a wedding and visited the Cottage in The Wood based on on-line reviews. We were not disappointed and had an excellent meal in a great location. The menu wasn't extensive but the quality shone through. £45 for three courses may seem expensive but it was good value for what was high end cooking which compared favourably with Michelin starred restaurants we've eaten in.
The location is pretty magical and was enhanced by the low cloud floating around the hills in the distance. Recommended.

We were given some vouchers for our wedding to use and experienced some amazing food, what it lacked in quantity it made up for in quality!

My husband and stopped for lunch, without a booking, and with our dog. It was no problem at all. We sat outside, the view was amazing.

The noise was amazing - silent!! It was just lovely place to sit and eat some really good food.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The food was lovely, the portions appear very small but actually for lunch were perfect. I didn't even have dessert.

My husband loved the raspberry jelly cube severed with coffee, I loved the pigeon. But it was by far the best malt bread i have ever eaten!!

So glad we stopped and had some time here
