This April was our third visit to this enchanting hotel.
Since our last stay there has been some major alterations to the reception area which has provided more lounge area without loosing it's charm and intimacy; again we were not disappointed.
The quality of the food and service by all of the staff is truly excellent. Such is the reputation of the restaurant it is patronised most evenings by non residents, so as a resident, booking is advisable and highly recommended to avoid disappointment...
We shall of course be returning

My boyfriend and I stayed here as part of the Living social deal and had an absolutely wonderful time! We wished we were there for longer and we will definitely be returning, and have already recommended this place to several of our family and friends. The location is utterly outstanding and is brilliantly located for many walks.

The service from start to finish was fabulous, we were very warmly greeted by one of the owners Kath who provided us with a lovely tea and cake upon our arrival, and her wonderful and welcoming manner continued through the whole stay. It was like she was delighted to have us there! :)

We stayed in the tree tops room which was quite an adventure as it was away up a second flight of stairs and was truly up in the tree tops! :) The room and bathroom was beautiful with a lovely freestanding bath. However, if you are very tall or have walking difficulties I would probably suggest you don't take this room.

We decided to have dinner in the hotel on both nights of our stay and we are very glad we did. The restaurant was fine dining without being stuffy and pompous. They had a wonderful and locally sourced selection of food and the wine list was extensive. We particularly enjoyed starting our evening in the lounge area with some champagne or prosecco and then taking some tea in there after our meal. :)

Breakfast was equally delicious and was made even better with the unparalleled views of the surrounding forest. We really could have sat there with a cup of tea all day!

In short, a wonderful place to stay and we hope to be back very soon! Thank you Kath and all the staff at Cottage in the Wood!

Room Tip: Tree tops room probably not suitable for very tall couples!! :) Or people with walking difficulties.

Hello ninedegrees

It's great to know you both enjoyed your stay at 'The Cottage' and that you intend to return. Tree Tops is one of our favourite rooms; it's very private and has a 'den' feel to it. Of course it can be a little 'tricky' for tall folk and we always flag this up when letting the room. We're grateful for the detail you have put in your review and we are sure it will be helpful to those considering staying with us.

Best wishes

The Cottage In The Wood is a very special dining experience in the heart of Whinlatter Forest. This was our second visit and once again, we were struck by the warmth and friendliness of the owner, from the telephone booking, through to arrival, throughout the meal and right up to departure.  The restaurant has a modern, but warm feel and the main dining area is a light and airy conservatory style room with the most breathtaking views of the fells beyond.  We had requested a table by the window at the time of booking and this had been arranged for us.

The food is lovely. It is locally sourced, perfectly cooked, exquisitely presented. The menu is not divided into 'starters', 'mains', and 'desserts', but the dishes can be chosen as a starter, an 'intermediate' or as a main dish. This provides maximum choice for the diner.  The dishes are also sensibly portioned, so we were not over-faced and we could comfortably enjoy three courses without feeling 'stuffed'. The quality of the food was noticeable, the fish very fresh, the rabbit tender as chicken (cutely described as 'Peter's fluffy friends' on the menu!)  What we liked was that the quality of the food was allowed to speak for itself, without being drowned in heavy, oily or creamy sauces.  Everything was light and delicious.

We had a fantastic evening: the quality dining experience only excelled by the genuinely lovely and warm welcome the owner provides.  We are already planning our next visit!

Living locally 6 of us came for dinner. It was delish, service excellent and a very warm welcome from all staff. Being foodies it was a delight to talk to the chef, who talks with real passion about the food they present. Also gave me a recipe for chocolate melting pudding which we can recommend along with the orange blossom icecream. Wasn't ripped off by wine prices either! A lovley evening will be back

The Cottage in the Wood is everything and more that you would wish for in a small country house hotel. We have stayed there on a number of occasions and have really enjoyed every one,our only regret having been that we couldn't stay longer.
On arrival you are greeted by a friendly member of staff, often the owner,Kath, shown to your room and invited to return downstairs ,when you are ready, to enjoy a cup of tea and some delicious home-made cake in front of a log fire. The rooms are beautifully furnished and comfortable with lovely views.
On to the restaurant, which is the crowning glory of this wonderful place. It is set in a fabulous conservatory with spectacular views over Whinlatter Forest and over to Skiddaw across the valley. The service is excellent, the food is exquisite and the wines are very reasonably priced, all making for a great dining experience. In the morning, breakfast is served here and is also a meal to savour and set you up for the day.
Throughout your stay you are looked after by courteous, friendly staff who genuinely seem to enjoy taking care of you and who make you feel so at home.
This place is a real gem!

This would be a wonderful place to stay for the location alone but the welcome a visitor receives from Kath and the team makes for an exceptional stay. The outlook from the restaurant accompanied by a really innovative menu means that you can look forward to a good start and finish to every day. The number of awards won by Liam and Kath speak for themselves. This will not be our only stay at the Cottage.
