“What a way to celebrate an engagement”
Reviewed 19 May 2012

Me and my future wife stayed here on the 12th April this year for 2 nights. It was booked to celebrate both my partners birthday and after a successful proposal by Ennerdale lake, it was also a celebration for our engagement. I can't think of a better way to celebrate. Kath was a brilliant host, both before I booked (she helped with the planning of the surprise and calmed my nerves!) and during our stay as well. Tea and carrot cake were offered at arrival, which is perfect after a nervy and exciting previous few hours. I asked for some flowers to be on arrival in the room and they were beautiful. There is no chance that I could have picked these myself!

We stayed in the garden room, which was amazing. The wet room is particularly brilliant. You also get a sofa at the end of the room to make it feel like a small suite, rather than just a room with a bed in it. The bed was comfy and the view you get of skiddaw when you walk out of the room is priceless (it helps when you get 2 days of glorious sunshine)

We also had one evening dinner here and I wish I had booked 2. The food is superb. There is so much flavour in each course and I would highly recommend to just have a meal here, if you can't stay over. You get the same excellent food treatment at breakfast and if you can get a table next to the window with a view of skiddaw, its perfect.

Overall, I cannot fault anything. You forget the price when you stay somewhere like this. We will definitely be coming back, whether to stay or just for an evening meal. Thank you to Kath and all the staff who work there. I picked the prefect place to propose and it was the perfect place to celebrate.

Room Tip: The garden room is worth every penny.

We came across this wonderful jewel in the Lakes District crown while driving through the district on our recent trip. I have to say, the two days we spent at Cottage in the Woods were exceptional. We arrived without a booking and we were greeted warmly by the wonderful Kath who made us feel very welcome and as a room was available we decided to stay.
We had dinner in the restaurant (with views to die for) and experienced the most amazing culinary delight that we had to stay another night.
The following night was our wedding anniversary and Kath and the lovely staff fussed over us again with another amazing dinner.
I encourage everyone who is travelling through the Lakes District to put this gem on the top of your list. Thank you all at Cottage in the Woods for making our trip & anniversary a memorable event.

I have recently returned from a short break at the Cottage in the Wood and I have to give it ten out of ten for comfort, food and pleasant staff. The location is perfect - quiet yet within easy driving distance of Keswick, Buttermere and all the surrounding places. The hotel is beautifully decorated with a very comfortable lounge area where you sit while selecting your evening meal off the varied and imaginative menu. The meals are taken in a beautiful dining room/conservatory which has glorious views over the lakeland fells. Our bedroom was very comfortable, with huge fluffy towels, good toileteries in the bathroom and an excellent shower. Bird lovers will be pleased at the many types of birds to be seen on the feeders hanging outside the windows and may also get a sighting of a red squirrel jumping into its nest box nearby. All in all its a very pleasant and relaxing place to stay and we will certainly return.

Room Tip: Our room "Birch" did not have a mountain view but we still had a pleasant view over the hi...

Dear Southport visitor. We're all delighted you enjoyed your stay at 'The Cottage'. You clearly enjoyed the wild life. The birds and squirrels are 'eating us out of house and home' at the moment. Phil Pheasant has taken to fighting his own reflection in the window of the Garden room and causing all sorts of problems (especially for those guests trying to sleep within the room). We think he is trying to impress his new lady friend! We're pleased to hear you intend to return and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Decided to visit The Cottage in the Woods mid-week on a whim after hearing such good things about it. Was lucky enough to get one of the last tables for two available that evening, and it was a great stroke of luck as it turned into such a memorable dinning experience.
Upon arival we were very warmily greeted by all of the staff, and led to the lounge area, for drinks and to look at the menu.
The menu style is very interesting with a choice of 3, 4 or 5 courses...the only promblem being that you will want to eat eveything so its difficult to choose. They also have an impressive and varied wine list for a small resautant.
The restaurant area is nice and intimate, I would love to go back in the day or latter in the year to be able to appreciate the panoramic views through the windows. The food was truly fantastic both visualy and taste wise. Its also good that the waiting on staff are very knowledgeable about the food they are serving and fill you in on where its from.
I can't recommed this restaurant enough you will love it... we'll be back again many times I hope and would love to stay over hwen we get the chance to take full advantage of the wine menu.

This April was our third visit to this enchanting hotel.
Since our last stay there has been some major alterations to the reception area which has provided more lounge area without loosing it's charm and intimacy; again we were not disappointed.
The quality of the food and service by all of the staff is truly excellent. Such is the reputation of the restaurant it is patronised most evenings by non residents, so as a resident, booking is advisable and highly recommended to avoid disappointment...
We shall of course be returning

My boyfriend and I stayed here as part of the Living social deal and had an absolutely wonderful time! We wished we were there for longer and we will definitely be returning, and have already recommended this place to several of our family and friends. The location is utterly outstanding and is brilliantly located for many walks.

The service from start to finish was fabulous, we were very warmly greeted by one of the owners Kath who provided us with a lovely tea and cake upon our arrival, and her wonderful and welcoming manner continued through the whole stay. It was like she was delighted to have us there! :)

We stayed in the tree tops room which was quite an adventure as it was away up a second flight of stairs and was truly up in the tree tops! :) The room and bathroom was beautiful with a lovely freestanding bath. However, if you are very tall or have walking difficulties I would probably suggest you don't take this room.

We decided to have dinner in the hotel on both nights of our stay and we are very glad we did. The restaurant was fine dining without being stuffy and pompous. They had a wonderful and locally sourced selection of food and the wine list was extensive. We particularly enjoyed starting our evening in the lounge area with some champagne or prosecco and then taking some tea in there after our meal. :)

Breakfast was equally delicious and was made even better with the unparalleled views of the surrounding forest. We really could have sat there with a cup of tea all day!

In short, a wonderful place to stay and we hope to be back very soon! Thank you Kath and all the staff at Cottage in the Wood!

Room Tip: Tree tops room probably not suitable for very tall couples!! :) Or people with walking difficulties.

Hello ninedegrees

It's great to know you both enjoyed your stay at 'The Cottage' and that you intend to return. Tree Tops is one of our favourite rooms; it's very private and has a 'den' feel to it. Of course it can be a little 'tricky' for tall folk and we always flag this up when letting the room. We're grateful for the detail you have put in your review and we are sure it will be helpful to those considering staying with us.

Best wishes
