“GOOD B&B”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2008

We stayed at the Cottage in the Wood for a weekend and overall found it to be very nice. Arrived to complimentary tea and cake on the new terrace which was a lovely touch. We had a deluxe room which was fine, nothing super special. The bathroom was very small indeed but the bed was large and extremely comfortable.

Breakfast and the evening meal was lovely and we would recommend dining at night here rather than in Keswick.

Just a few observations - the bar area is tiny and not very welcoming, it needs revamping. The door leading to the rooms is like something from a nasty pub and the corridors are in need of redecoration. The conservatory is nice but lacks atmosphere and echoes so you feel like you need to speak in hushed tones. It just needs some art on the walls, blinds and please get rid of those awful, cheap table mats that one sees in grotty pubs. Oh, and we heard about 3 other guests commenting on the background music, please get some new cd's!

Kath is polite but in a strained, school teacher way. We didn't feel as though we could relax here which is a shame as it gets so many other things right. It just needs to work out what it wants to be.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return but hope some of our comments are taken on board to make this a top notch b&b.

I spent a few days at the Cottage in July and it was a very lovely experience I can highly recommend to anyone. The host was very warm and forthcoming from the moment we arrived and there were great staff who attended to everyone’s need. The rooms are quite large and spacious with fabulous bathrooms and everything is clean and fresh.

We had both dinner and the breakfasts at their restaurant and the food tastes wonderful. The breakfasts are wonderfully cooked to your specification and the dinner menu is varied and delicious.

The hotel is a few minutes outside of Keswick, far enough away so you have to take a car to get into town. We enjoyed the walks and enjoyed the hotel’s secluded location. I will definitely return to the Cottage.

This gem of a b+b is situated near the forest in the southern lakes, about 10 minutes from Keswick town centre and was a real delight from the moment we arrived. Kath, the owner was simply so gracious and positive, it's infectious! We were greeted with afternoon tea and cake before being shown around the B+B by our host Kath. Kath seemed to really delight in her job and proved to a perfect host...
Our standard bed room was fine but the small details in the room were impressive... the plumped up pillows, comfy duvets, the biscuits by the tea maker, the flatscreen tv and digital player. The dinner was good although a little small but perhaps that was a little quibble compared to the most amazing breakfasts ever - fit for a king! What amazing food!!!
I won't forget the smoked salmon wrapped around scrambled eggs on brioche or the cooked breakfasts. For those ramblers out there, you can't beat this first meal of the day!!
Kath was so kind as to show us different walking routes and bent over backwards to provide books and further information on rambles for us.
The B+B seemed to be full up and mostly catered for a 40+ age group customers although there were families and all ages there for the wet weekend when we arrived.
Drinking at the bar at night, other guests were very friendly and joined in on a round of trivial pursuit which was good fun.
All the staff are professional, polite and friendly, especially the lovely fun cleaners who showed me the red squirrels eating from the bird table and chatted to about the local area.
This B+B is a secret gem and wish Kath and Liam many happy and successful years here. Other B+B's across the country should take notes from the standard care and level of detail experienced at the Cottage in the Wood.

I stayed at the Cottage in the Wood for New Year's 2007/8 and had a fantastic time. I had such a good time that I'm annoyed people seem to give a low rating for some trivial reasons.

Firstly, this isn't a hotel for people over 50. I am under 30. I stayed with my girlfriend and another couple. When we arrived Kath was amazing and wasn't "ageist" in the slightest. We were welcomed with tea and cake (good cake) whilst we unpacked upstairs. Our food was fantastic too - some of the best I've had in England. Each meal was catered for individually and even the fussiest eater would be happy there.

Secondly - no, there isn't the buzzing nightlife you'd find in central London. This is a cottage - in the wood. They named the place this for a very good reason. Don't be expecting to walk outside and find a Tesco across the road. There isn't even phone service in the area - this is how secluded it is.

Lastly - this is a cottage, not a mansion. You have to go there and expect not to have a massive room. We booked two months in advance and had to choose between a mountain view or have a bath in our room. We chose the bath (totally worth it in December in the Lakes). I find it annoying that people give this place 2 stars for that reason, or because one request for a tuna sandwich was forgotten, or that there's not enough room in the hall. This is a cottage and is small and cosy to represent their accomodation.

I agree with one review that it's actually more comfortable and welcoming than your own home! Brilliant stay, and look forward to staying there again. When we left Kath told us that they were closing down in order to build an extension that they already begun (solving the complainers about no space) with an outdoor hot tub. I look forward to seeing it.

Superb food using local ingredients and executed with great skill. Some of the best food I have tasted anywhere. Lovely staff and attractive, well equipped rooms. From the lovely new dining room we looked down the valley and watched the light changing on the fells. Better than any other image around. Thanks Kath and Liam.

Just stayed at the cottage for a week and must say it was special, it is about 1 mile from Braithwaite into whinlatter forest which is so peaceful.
Kath Looked after us so much and nothing was too much trouble.
We stayed in the Deluxe attic suite which has a big roll top bath and a separate shower, The most relaxing King size bed i have ever slept in and a flat screen tv with freeview.
Liams food is just superb! From the breakfast to the Evening meals all of which are served in the new extension with views of the surrounding forest and Skiddaw mountain which we climbed.
Whinlatter forest centre is 5mins walk up the road and has some lovely walks but there are so many walks for all levels from the cottage and the surrounding area, plus Keswick is only a 10mins drive away so you get the best of both worlds if you want to shop.
We enjoyed our stay so much and will definitely go back to the cottage.

Our first trip to the Lake District. Location was great. Within walking distance to Whinlatter Forest. Great views of Skiddaw Mtn and the forest. Kath and Liam made us feel welcome and provided with lots of information on the area and things to do. Hotel was lovely and charming. Breakfast was very good and lots of food. We found dinner a little pricey (comparing to US Dollars) but was very good. The evenings were enjoyable talking to the other guests. Our room (#1) had a wonderful view of the mountain and forest. Would highly recommend.
