Oh...wow..!! A beautiful...beautiful treat from my very special hubby!! He'd heard excellent reviews.. And they were certainly not wrong,, !! Thank you for an excellent meal, and knowing my slight diet request! (Mmmm..being lactose tolerance usually means - skip 3rd course! But oh..no Chef had it all in control!! Thank you for my own special 'sweet' xx) The staff were extremely friendly too. Oh we will return..!!.. Much appreciated!! Though next time - we will book a table with a view!! Thank you - thank you - thank you xxx

Room Tip: When booking a table - ask for a table in the conservatory, a room with a view!!

We love this little hideaway it ticks all the boxes for a wonderful stay. The rooms are immaculate and the classic rooms are very comfy, especially the bed. Kath is a very welcoming host and her staff are lovely. We had a great conversation with the young lady who looked after us for dinner on Saturday 12th April. The food is wonderful and the new chef and team will not disappoint. The quality of the food is second to none and the local produce remains special to them. My husband said the hoggit was the best he had tasted, I had the beef which was delicious. The wine list compliments the food and the whole experience is one to be savoured.
Breakfast will not disappoint either, ingredients are of a high quality. Nothing is rushed, very relaxed and also tea/coffee and cake on arrival.
I just wish we had an establishment near us in Hampshire!
Thank you for a lovely break we will visit you again as soon as we are able.

We stayed at The Cottage in the Wood on our wedding night and returned to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. A very different place now, a restaurant with rooms rather than the B & B we stayed in before, but it has changed for the better. A very comfortable, stylishly decorated place to stay. Our room was immaculate and there were lovely little touches like Arran Aromatics toiletries and homemade shortbread. The staff were so friendly, they couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome. We sampled the cooked breakfast as well as the kippers and special, consisting of a fried duck egg on toasted sour dough bread with field mushrooms and crispy bacon. The ingredients are all locally sourced and beautifully cooked. We had no need of lunch when we went off for the day. On the Saturday night we dined in the restaurant, what a treat, not least because of the stunning views. More than we would usually pay for a meal out but this was a special occasion and we were not disappointed. The presentation was simply beautiful and I have never tasted such wonderful combinations of flavours. This is a truly talented chef, imaginative, inspired cooking! I had the Herdwick Hogget and have never tasted lamb like it- literally melt in the mouth. We will certainly be visiting again and would highly recommend The Cottage in the Wood both as a restaurant and a place to stay in a stunning location.

Room Tip: We had one of the basic rooms and it was more than adequate for our needs. There are more luxurious options if required!

Just home from three lovely nights staying at The Cottage in the Woods. We found the staff so friendly and kind. We loved the complimentary tea & gorgeous cake on arrival. We had one of the basic rooms which suited our needs. It's also a fantastic location for activities in the forest.

The thing that steals the show here is the food. It's exceptional. We live in Edinburgh and eat out a lot and often in Michelin star restaurants and we were not disappointed here! We ate in the restaurant twice. The portion sizes where perfect and the flavours expertly put together. Between us over the two nights we had the salmon / crab / rabbit as starters. The only main we had (as it was so amazing) was the beef. We both had it both nights!! For desert we had the arctic roll, rhubarb cheesecake, and cheese. All simply stunning. The wine list should also not go unmentioned it's surprisingly full for the size of the restaurant with some great choice. Also not to be missed are the breakfasts - similar high standard as dinner. Perfect start to the day! We've already recommended to everyone we know (via social media!). This place is a treat!

In response to the very odd poor review below I would question the fine dining restaurants they've eaten in that they expected a side of veg!?! My fiancé is 6ft 3 and a huge eater and was very full after the dinner and the beef dish. And the staff are so friendly and genuine. The dining room is atmospheric and has stunning views. I was shocked my their comments.

The hostess Kathy is a gorgeous woman who is warm and gentle and all her staff reflect this. We stayed here for there days so met a lot of them!

We will we be back. Already can't wait to eat here again!!

Stayed 2 nights at The Cottage in the Wood last weekend, what a fantastic place, Wonderful hosts & excellent staff, tea and cakes served in the lounge on arrival, well equipped rooms, Food was to die for we had the taster menu one night can't praise the quality of the food enough, well done to the chef.
Although next to a road the amount of passing traffic was close to zero so we had a peaceful nights sleep, surrounded by forest it really is a Cottage in the wood.
Wonderful stay, only downside the Red Squirrels didn't show up while we were there, but that's wildlife for you.
Highly recommended
