“Went for lunch - it was excellent”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

My husband and I went for a last minute lunch while deriving past. we had our dog so sat outside but the staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing, we went for set lunch menu. The portions are small but perfect for lunch and we didn't even go for dessert.

My husband loved the raspberry petit fois jelly cube! i love the pigeon.

Great place so glad we went.

we stayed overnight in the garden room, this was a really beautiful room, very spacious and good attention to detail.
we had the seven course taster meal that was excellent, the staff were brilliant and very helpful
explaining every course and advising us on which wine to have it made it a very pleasant evening.
the breakfast next morning was also very tasty and everything was well presented, we also thought the complimentary tea and cake on arrival was a very nice touch.
all together we had a really fantastic time and we look forward to visiting again

We had stayed at The Cottage in the Wood a few years ago and had a wonderful stay so I was hoping that when I booked a four night stay for last week that we would not be disappointed - we certainly were not disappointed as the Cottage in the Wood was even better than I remembered! Our room, The Garden Room, was very spacious with a lovely bathroom - altogether very comfortable. We ate in the restaurant each evening and the food was simply delicious - my husband thoroughly recommends the Herdwick Hoggett and I loved the chocolate desert (I ordered it three times!). The breakfast also was a real treat - there was a special one day of sour dough bread topped with a duck egg and lovely crispy bacon.

However, the real highlight was the impeccable service - very friendly but so efficient.

Many, many thanks to Kath and Liam and all their staff for a wonderful stay - we hope to be back in the not too distant future.

This was our third visit to this hotel. Small and friendly the service is excellent. Its very relaxing and charming . A great deal of effort has gone into decorating and maintaining the individual bedrooms and the garden room on this occasion was superb.
So why disappointed? It was the food. It was very good quality and served nicely but didn't have a great deal of choice and was short on carbs and veg. We felt maybe they were trying too hard and could have dropped the taster menu.It was also expensive.
Having said that the breakfasts were great and the above didn't spoil our very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: The garden room is my favourite its very quiet with its own entrance.

Excellent food and service. Liam, Kath and their team are superb and welcoming hosts. The rooms are tastefully decorated, very clean and with some nice complimentary toiletries. We would recommend the taster menu with the matched wines as we really enjoyed our experience. ( The mango / passion fruit trifle with rum / mint granita was memorable ). The views on the patio and from the dining room are spectacular and we loved eating our breakfast watching the jays eating from the bird feeder !

Room Tip: The Mountain room is spacious and has beautiful views

Thanks to Kath and her team for a wonderful weekend in Whinlatter. Lovely room, delicious food and superb views from our Room, the restaurant and patio. We also enjoyed a couple of walks around the area, getting up to Whinlatter summit and Lords Seat and Barf, all from the front door.

I booked a relatively last minute stay to celebrate my wife's birthday. Unfortunately we had to cancel the stay and Kath went out of her way to refund my deposit (required new PDQ machine and downloads due to an issue with processing my card).
Service really was exceptional especially when the hotel ended up without a penny from me.
I certainly hope we can re-book very soon.
