I`m not easily impressed, but the whole experience of "The Cottage In The Wood" was very impressive. Food was delicious, rooms comfy and clean, setting absolutely stunning, and Cath has the best customer service ever. Highly recommended!!!!!

On arrival we had the most warm & friendly greeting from Kath, who made us so welcome with tea & cake (homemade of course)! We could not fault the location, service, cleanliness & food, it was a fabulous mini break, cant wait to go back again.

I cannot rate this hotel highly enough. From arrival to departure everything was perfect. I was a little apprehensive upon reading some of the reviews as I thought it would be smaller. However, we were pleasantly surprised and I thought very spacious. We stayed in a standard room which overlooked the mountains - it was truly breathtaking waking up to in the morning to those views. The room was great - everything we could need: very clean and comfortable, the room also appeared to have been recently refurbished. The owners (Kath and Liam) were incredibly professional and friendly; they certainly ticked every single box in looking after us. The food is amazing too - presentation, local produce - again, brilliant.

We hired mountain bikes which is a walkable distance from the hotel (about a 5 min walk) which was totally exhilarating. The scenery is breathtaking especially when you get up high into the mountains. There's a driving route through Buttermere which I would totally recommend (recommend by Kath) - the landscape reminds me so much of my second home in New Zealand.

To summarise, if you stay anywhere in the Lakes, I totally recommend staying at The Cottage in the Wood. We absolutely loved it. Kath and Liam have done a splendid job. You will not be dissapointed.

We had a fantastic time here! The location was ideally located in a quiet area where you can access the great walks and scenic views yet are only 10 minutes away from the nearby town of Keswick if you need anything.

I know some reviews have called Kath (the co-owner) moody but she was anything but! She remembered our names every time she saw us and was always willing to put in the effort to do anything that we needed (big or small).

Upon arrival we were treated to fresh coffee from a cafetiere and some tasty cake as we browsed through the massive list of things to do around the area. We decided to avoid dinner as it was a little pricey for our student budget (although it did sound delicious) and the staff were able to recommend some places we could go to to eat out for the evening.

The room was fantastic and very comfortable, and came with everything we could need (fresh towels, toiletries, hairdryer, freeview television, kettle and free tea+coffee) plus it had an electric blanket which made the bed extra toasty (not that the room was cold anyway).

The breakfast that was included with the price of the room was delicious and very varied, and the restaurant which it was served in offered a wonderful view of the area.

Overall this was a fantastic trip, and ticked every box we had.

Anna & Paul, Warrington - 21&22 Feb 09
Our 2 night stay at The Cottage in the Wood was absolutely wonderful and I would recommend you book a visit soon! From the breathtaking location, the cosy log fire in the lounge to the modern setting of the restaurant which serves the most mouthwatering food (sourced locally) – I really can’t fault it and can’t wait to return.

On arrival, we were greeted by Kath who, along with her small team, does a fantastic job front of house. We were shown to our snug but beautifully furnished (Standard) room and then enjoyed complimentary tea and cakes by the fire – bliss!

We enjoyed dinner in the restaurant on both nights. Liam’s food is delicious – his menus are uncomplicated and focus very much on the quality of the ingredients resulting in beautifully cooked and presented dishes. We were also very impressed with the wine list which was extremely reasonably priced too.

If you can tear yourself away from the cosy Cottage, the location really is superb and definitely my favourite part of the Lake District. As we are novice walkers, Kath was great in suggesting a few ‘easy’ walks – one of which started literally on the doorstep of the Cottage. This encompassed a trip to the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre (Go Ape fans will be glad to know there’s a great course here!) and a moderate ascent to Seat Howe with it’s stunning views of Bassenthwaite Lake and beyond. 10 minutes up the road is the town of Keswick with it’s superb range of shops and charming cafes and restaurants. This area in my opinion is much more appealing than Bowness, Windamere for example where we briefly stopped and hastily left due to the crowds of people and limited choice of ‘decent’ restaurants. In fact, after our brief trip to Windamere we couldn’t get back to Keswick and The Cottage quick enough!

We have stayed at a number of 5 star luxury hotels and resorts around the world and it is lovely to see that Kath and Liam have managed to maintain the traditional style, integrity and comfort of the Cottage whilst also adding to its appeal with all those little extra touches which make somewhere truly first class. So, hats off to Kath and Liam for a perfect little place – I’ll certainly be recommending it to friends!

I booked the 2 night stay for the 2nd and 3rd of Jan 09 as a supprise for my wife's birthday.
The weather was very cold and clear, the scenery stunning and the welcome and hospitality absolutely first class.
We ate in the both nights and were knocked out by the food quality. Kath was a super host and the staff were friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble.
Would we go back ? yes without a doubt.
The Cottage In The Wood has already been highly recommended to all of our friends.
