Gill Brow Farm
Reviewed 24 July 2014

While it was a little bit difficult for me to find the place, the stay at Gill Brow was a very good experience.
The property is located in the farming area of Newlands Valley and, as a result, is situated in an area where it is only accessible by a single lane country road. If you are not used to driving in UK like I wasn't, you may find it a little difficult to find.
However, it turned out to be a good thing to stay here because of the hospitality of the host as well as the overall ambience this old house affords.
Upon our arrival, we were treated to a tea and cookies. Our rooms were modest but comfortable. The house itself is said to be more than 300 years old and is decorated with family heirlooms giving you an insight into an ordinary English family.
Breakfast was fulfilling and delicious. The house is close to the town of Keswick (5 minutes by car), many small country pubs, and the beautiful, majestic Newland Valley.

I'm posting this to stress the amazing views and to correct a mistake in my previous review which was posted in error from my facebook account.

Where the previous review says 'we had to share it'. It should have said 'we were asked to share it'

I tried to edit this mistake at the time but the system wouldn't let me.

I've scored a four this time so that this review doesn't affect the overall score. I'm sure that's as clear as mud!

I'm a real fan of Trip Advisor on the whole but it gets very difficult when things aren't completely straightforward.

We had a mixture of experiences at this farm house bnb as follows:

Fabulous location, nice welcome with an offer of tea or coffee, comfy, clean bedroom and bathroom, no tv in room, no tea and coffee making in room. We could have gone downstairs to the lounge for tea and coffee but since we didn't fancy wandering around last thing at night and first thing in the morning in our pajamas, we just drank tap water.

The latest serving for breakfast was 9am so we had to set our alarm clocks (on holiday) and since there is only one small table in the breakfast room, we had to share it with another couple which was a first for us and not the most relaxing start to the day.

Our breakfast which was freshly cooked and tasty was served on a side plate for some reason and there was lovely unlimited tea, coffee and toast. We also had orange juice and cereal.

On holiday we like to be able to make tea and coffee in our room, watch a bit of telly (although that's not a deal breaker as we love reading), have a bit of a lie in, eat our breakfast off an ordinary sized plate so we can manoeuvre it around and fit the toast on, and not have to make small talk on a morning with strangers a few inches away.

So, all in all this was a below average experience for us.

We had a wonderful stay at Gill Brow B&B. Located in the Newlands Valley, this 300 year old farm house is on a working farm. wooden floors, low ceilings and period furniture all make for a great ambiance. The rooms are comfortable and airy. The place is away from the touristy areas and hence is quiet and peaceful. The views from the property are great. The hearty breakfast cooked by Anne every morning is sumptuous from fresh farm produce. A word of advise though is that the place is good only if you have your own transport!

Too bad that this is misspelled as "fram" and not "farm"---hopefully someone changes that.

Up Newlands Valley, this is a working farm that has a view out the window onto the Catbells (the other side faces Derwentwater) and on the road from Buttermere to Keswick. The road is a single lane, very narrow road with turnoffs--but it does keep the crazy crowds from Keswick away and makes it feel like you're truly in a wonderland.

The host is friendly and kind. When we went hiking, she let us borrow her topographical map which was a great aid! Coffee or tea with a snack when we arrived. There is a sitting room, too, for guests downstairs.

It is an old farm house so the floors slope quite a bit (at least in our room) but that didn't bother us at all.
