“Beautiful hideaway in the Marlborough Sounds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

We stayed two nights at The Blue Water Lodge with 3 friends and had the whole lodge to ourselves which made it very cosy. The lodge is beautifully set on a steep hillside overlooking Endeavour Inlet. The view from the large deck and from the rooms onto the inlet is amazing. The three course dinner prepared by Rod was delicious. On the second day, Rod took us fishing on his boat and we (inexperienced fishers) caught many fish - which Rod later cooked as a starter. On the same day we saw a pod of dolphins in the inlet and at night, just below the lodge, many glowworms.

My wife, father, and I spent our first two nights at Blue Water while hiking the Queen Charlotte track and it was a wonderful beginning to the walk. Rod is the perfect host while also making us feel like family. The rooms were comfy and have great views. Shortly after we arrived we watched a pod of orcas in the bay from our window. The food was excellent and ample and Rod took us fishing on his yacht during our free day there. Plenty of fresh fish to eat and a lesson in the sounds environment along the way. A most enjoyable stay!

Travelled through some of the Queen Charlotte Walk a few months ago and this was one of our stops on the three day walk. Stayed there with my family and also friends and their two Children. Rod did very well to cater for 8 of us and provided some lovely food for our dinner that night.
It's a good old hike up the hill to the house, but once there, you will love the views over the water. Rooms were clean and comfortable.
All in all, a very good experience. Not cheap, but worth the effort to get there, in what is undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand.

Was lucky to be the only guest and ended up extending my stay an extra night. Rod let me tag along on a pig hunting trip and in the afternoon we went fishing on his boat. Fresh fish for dinner that night! The next day was kayaking in the inlet and drinks on the boat with some of the other local lodge owners. Rod is a great host and pure Kiwi!

Blue Water Lodge was the venue of my first night's sleep on the 4 day hike on the Queen Charlotte Track. I was the only guest that night, and had a wonderful room with outstanding views. The food was excellent. Rod was really interesting, friendly, and helpful, and is passionate about and highly committed to the environment; it is quite apparent that he really loves the area and wants his guests to love it too. A young French lady was helping him with the work when I was there, and I was delighted that she and Rod ate dinner with me almost like we were a family. I found this particularly enjoyable.

Of four places where we stayed in the course of walking the Queen Charlotte track, Blue Water Lodge stood out as the one in which we had the most enjoyable time. Our room - in a house built by our host - had a spectacular view over the inlet. The welcoming cup of tea on our foot-weary arrival, three course evening dinner and breakfast next morning were all prepared with care and thought, and Rod's engaging hospitality and conversation combined to lift this place out of the ordinary. Definitely recommended.

We arrived here after a couple of hours hiking. Rob met us and offered us some refreshments. It felt like coming home.

The place is located with a very nice view of the bay with amazing sunsets. Our photos from our room are spectacular.

The dinner which is cooked for you is very good, a three course dinner. We got scallops and some shellfish for starter and a very nice chicken for main course to finish of with a carrot cake. We bought a bottle of wine and in the end we went to that wineyard to buy the same wine to bring home as a memory of the stay.

Rob is a great host, with interesting stories about life. I just wished we had stayed for a little longer to get to know the place and Rob a little more.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with the view. It is a amazing.
