Won a one night stay including dinner & breakfast in an internet competition with Durham Tourist Board. Our room in the courtyard was very comfortable & the en-suite was fully tiled, spacious & contained top class toiletries . There was also a table & two chairs outside. The hotel itself ,especially the dining area is very attractive & the food is very good. My sirloin steak in the evening was thick & juicy & cooked to perfection. The Yorkshire breakfast the following morning was also perfectly cooked. The staff were very friendly & professional. However I think the hotel is slightly overpriced if we were to have paid.

I was disappointed with my last stay. This was always my first choice when visiting the area - which I did a lot. However, it has changed hands and the main difference is that the restaurant menu is the same all week, whereas it used to change daily. The hotel has lost some of its sparkle.
The rooms are charming, as long as you are in the main building. The extension rooms are rather ordinary.
The village itself is really charming and beautiful to walk around.

Room Tip: Go for the main building.

We stayed at this destination pub recently and were very impressed with the friendliness/helpfulness of the staff, the quality/presentation of the food, and the standard of the rooms. This is definitely not a cheap destination as the rooms are hotel priced but their standard matches most quality hotels. The food however, is hotel quality without being similarly priced, and the atmosphere far more relaxed.
The only criticism we had was the quality of the WiFi coverage which was poor at best, but we were assured this was being fixed.

Worth the trip to find it, and thus discover the beauty of Teesdale generally.

Room Tip: We stayed in the courtyard rooms which were classy, roomy, and faultless

My wife and I enjoyed three nights at the Rose and Crown. We had a room in the courtyard, a few yards from the hotel. There are five such rooms in an attractive single storey building, ours was a superior double. A very comfortable room with furniture, decoration etc. of high quality (e.g Bose sound system), The en-suite bathroom and its contents were upto the same high standard. Immediately outside the door there was outdoor seating and a table. The hotel building itself is full of character. The restaurant is particularly attractive.
the food was excellent as was the service. Staff were efficient and friendly.
Some reviews commenting solely on the restaurant suggest that it is somewhat expensive. Many would agree, a pre meal drink and a three course evening meal for two with wine would probably cost from £80 upwards. However, our booking of the "Teesdale Walking Break" offer (actual walking optional!) included any selection from the evening menu and considering the overall quality of the whole package over three days the cost is very reasonable . We shall certainly return.

Room Tip: We found the room in the courtyard to be very quiet and peaceful -despite the fact that a few cars u...

We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate my birthday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room was a twin bedded suite on the second floor with beautiful views across the village green and to the church. The room was of an excellent standard and very spacious. We had dinner in the hotel both evenings and the food was superb and there was an extensive wine list. Each morning we enjoyed a hearty breakfast before setting out to explore this beautiful part of the world. The staff in the hotel are delightful and the attention to detail is awesome.

Room Tip: We had room 6 - a twin bedded suite on the second floor. It was very quiet and had lovely views of t...

Stayed for 3 nights recently in a superior room in the stables area behind the hotel. Very comfortable beds and room clean. Friendly staff, food generally very good although did have overcooked steak one night. Had travelled for 6 hrs and too tired to send it back. WiFi didn't work in the bedroom, had to keep up with work in the residents' sitting room. Overall, very well run hotel in a beautiful setting. Will return.

I stayed here for one night while travelling for work, as it was recommended by a colleague and it far exceeded any expectations. The staff were welcoming, extremely friendly and professional. The rooms more than adequately equipped and the food is of a very high standard. The staff even returned my phone charger by post having left it behind. A genuinely refreshing stay, many thanks.
