“Old French - Do Not Miss This Restaurant”

Entering this restaurant, one passes by the hotel desk, strewn with papers, flying in all directions. Sometimes you will see a cat walking across the desk as you go into the absolutely lovely, old fashioned and most feminine dining room. It is a step back in time and well worth the trip! The delightful Madame, with her sweet smile and most chic outfits, takes you to your table either in the dining room or onto the summer terrace. The food is beautifully presented and delicious, from the perfect entree to the plats and desserts. Do put it on your list of a "must" in Montignac.

Someone else mentioned Fawlty Towers and that is somewhat spot on. Who can't love this place in all of its quirkiness? The dining room is over the top with color and Frenchness. The elderly woman who serves is so delightful and seems content to have you as her only table in the evening. I am not a cat lover but found myself sneaking little bites to one of them who circled our table.

We did not stay here but wanted to review the restaurant and there does not appear to be a listing for it. Service is pleasantly slow but who cares? Where did we need to be but enjoying drinks and great food!

The food, most importantly, was superb. All three of us had Foie Gras and it was just wonderful and elegantly presented. We had very nice aperitifs as well. For main plates we had Filet de Beourf which was slightly more cooked than requested but still delicious, Chateaubriand that was vacuumed off the plate and Turbot. All was very nice was was the wine we choose (Raz).

It is surprising that more people are not eating here. Two couples walked in during our meal, turned up their noses and left rather rudely as Madame pursued them. They didn't realize what they were missing!

If weather permits, eat outside on the terrace as it is quite pleasant!

We stumbled onto this restaurant on a quiet Tuesday night as we found the restaurant we'd been meaning to visit closed.

I didn't check the other reviews beforehand, but had a good chuckle reading them as our experience was quite similar, although lacking slapstick incidents involving the cat.
The cat did make a quick appearance, but luckily went unnoticed by my feisty young lab mix who's usually none to fond of cats.

I must say we smelled the cat before we saw it, which gave the fabulously kitschy pink decor a slightly grubby tinge, and had us a bit apprehensive about our choice at first, also because we were the only ones there.

It is a testament to the quality and presentation of the food and the quirky charm of the owner, that this, and her easy paced, absentminded service didn't detract from the evening.

It was obvious that the charming older lady had to do everything all by herself, so we were quick to forgive that the drinks took a while and one was forgotten, and a delicious amuse dispelled any doubts about the food.

Food and wine were top notch, and very reasonably priced. We later had a meal at nearly double the price at a more upscale venue with a big, very proffesional staff, which was also very good but slightly below this one in terms of creativity in the dishes and their presentation. Imagine our surprise when the lady mentioned she was also doing the cooking herself!

Admittedly the meal took a long time overall, and we did not receive our meals at the same time, but they were only minutes apart and we could still eat together. More importantly, it did not feel like a long wait because of the pleasant ambiance and the entertainment the charming lady inadvertantly provides with her quirky demeanor. Being on vacation, we had the time to spare anyway and the food and overall experience was well worth it, easily the best meal we've had this trip so far.
Kudos to the hard working and very charming owner!

Stayed here for only one night, as we were late getting to Montignac. We stayed in the annex.
We went down to the restaurant and had dinner in the garden, served by this lovely little lady, I think her name was Marie. All was very good and hospitality was super. The owner fourth generation was lovely as well. Overall a very interesting stay, could be wonderful with a bit of TLC

Read the other two reviews first to get the flavour ! We had a stray dog stuck in the steam which the chef did an admirable job of rescuing! BUT definitely a touch of "mrs overall" . All pleasantans tasty food but took ages. An interesting experience but one we shall not repeat. The real complaint is that out of party of 5, one plate was brought, then 10 mins later another, then another few mins then 2 more , then mine by which time th first two had finished ! We mentioned that this was disappointing and were told that gastronomic restaurants this happens as food takes different times to cook ! It isn't usually a problem ! But overall a pity as the food was lovely!

We found this restaurant after working our way through Montignac late on a Sunday night. Everything was fully booked or closed. La Grotte was open and we were greeted by a very gracious older woman into a fabulously overdone dining room...paintings cover the walls, all the tables are fully set with table cloths, glasses and multiple cutlery, rugs on the floor etc. It had a lot of atmosphere to say the least. We knew we were in trouble when we were taken to the corner with the only other 3 tables that were filled in a room of many empty tables. Everyone spoke in a whisper because it was impossible not to eves-drop (I do not understand why we all had to sit on top of each other but looking back it only added to the experience). It took about 40 minutes to get the first glass of wine and overall the meal took about 2.5 hours but I laughed most of the way through and it extremely memorable. The food was actually very good and there was obviously a serious chef in the kitchen trying hard because the presentation was great but madam was the only one serving and kept forgetting where she had placed things, what was ordered or who had ordered it. At one point she came out with our dessert but realized we still had our dinner plates so she put the dessert on another table to clear our plates. After about 15 minutes she came back out and was surprised to see we were not eating dessert, she started to look around for it and then finally remembered where she has put it. Luckily it was not the main course!

Then there was the mad cat that kept running around the restaurant. Some Germans came in a 10.30 (yikes, yes, 10.30pm) to eat and the first thing the lady said was that she was not a friend of cats and had noticed one on the premises. Madam assured her the cat would not bother her. In fact the cat was not really bothering anyone, just strolling around. The German lady however was not pleased by strolling cats and her distaste rolled off her in waves. The cat must have picked up on this because as soon as they got their starter, the cat leapt on their table and sat at the empty third seat staring at them while they shrieked in horror. Madam came out to "hooch" the cat away who took his sweet time to leave the table and the trembling Germans behind while the rest of us in the restaurant tried to surpress our glee. Meanwhile the cat was shooed into the kitchen where we could hear the staff sweeting talking to it and someone was even meowing to the cat behind the kitchen doors, singing some kind of song.

overall it was mad but it was one of the most entertaining evenings I have had and the food was excellent and great value for money. If you have a sense of humor and the patience of a saint then La Grotte is the place for you...just take your allergy tablets and leave your attitude at the door, you won't be disappointed.

We have eaten here several times and each time we go away smiling - which can't be bad.

It is an old, somewhat faded, elegant restaurant & hotel, in the heart of Montignac on the roadside beside the river. It has a lovely old romantic restaurant complete with candelabra, chair covers with bows, and worn persian rugs scattered about the floor. The Madame proprietor of the hotel is a tall and elegant woman who is pleasantness personified, and is complemented by her 'old retainer staff' who are quirky, kind, and always remind me of a 'Wood and Walters' sketch.

There is also a lovely garden to eat in or the colourful and very French roadside veranda area which enables you to view all that is going on, while still eating in style at a wonderful white table clothed table, & Parisian cafe style white. and pink wrought iron chairs.

The food is excellent - and also elegant in presentation - most of the time-but it is this quirky
(sometimes not always 100% perfect, but always tasty) that makes this place so fantastic. There is nothing snotty about this place or trying to make you feel intimidated with fine dining. It is a lovely experience, with good food, served by very nice people. Hope you like it as much as we do!
At the end of one meal we had, our old dog - who we thought was asleep decided to leap up and chase 'Madames' equally elegant fluffy Persian cat. It was like a bizarre version of a 'Benny Hill' sketch with us all - Madame and old retainers included - as well as both of us, all chasing a naughty dog chasing a cat through this lovely old hotel!! - a nightmare, and we thought we would never be able to go back, but when we did, nearly 6 mths later, we were welcomed with open arms. Very nice, normal people.
