El Mosco is a home away from home, located in one of the most remote parts of Chile. Accommodation is divided into dormitory style rooms (downstairs) and private rooms (upstairs). The accommodation was comfortable and the service is excellent. The hosts go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Good value for money and I would definitely recommend a stay here. Ensure that you make your bus reservations in advance as it could be problematic to get out of here due to the limited transport options.

Big common clean area with kitchen, 6 bed shared rooms, staff was very friendly. Clean simple bathrooms. Poor Internet in Villa Ohiggins (saturated sat link). PC available. Many bikers & backpackers from all around stay here & share experiences crossing to Argentina or hiking Carretera Austral.

I've been there for a night in January 2012. It's a very friendly and not expensive hostel, with good bethrooms, big kitchen, warm dorms and wi-fi.They have also a camping area right in front the porch. The hostel is run by a French guy who knows a lot of the area and may give you good tips about places to visit.

Very nice and cozy place, price is more than acceptable, no breakfast included but the kitchen is very well equipped, Great place to make friends if you travel alone. The village is really lost in the region and it´s a very pleasant surprise to find a guy, Jorge, that is MUCH more organized than the rest of the people in the area. On the minus side, is that dorms are not heated, but he provides a lot of blankets, you´re not gonna be cold.
I paid 8.000 Chilean pesos in Nov 2011 for a bed in the dorm.

We only had a night stop over here as we were taking the ferry across O'Higgins lake the following morning. The bus picks you up to take you to the ferry.

The hostel was well maintained. There is a lovely dining area and communal roomupstairs along with the double rooms. These are small and have low ceilings. The shared bathrooms are newly fitted and work a dream. The dormotoires are downstairs with the kitachen area that is spacious and equipped with several hobs and a selection of pans to muster up culinary delights - or burgers in my case. It is more expensive than the going rate but what it provided is much better. To put it into perspective, we paid more in the lake district, both in the Chilean and Argentinian sides. Breakfast is included, and whilst there was a couple of pieces of bread were nice and the coffee half decent, the 3,000pesos quoted for dorm sleepers is steep.

El Mosco is run by the big-hearted, knowledge and welcoming Jorge Salgado, and we had a great stay for 3 nights in his fab hostel. Villa O'Higgins really is in the middle of nowhere, and El Mosco is a very comfortable, warm, and friendly lodge with everything a traveller needs - particularly after a 12 hour bus journey in a crowded micro down the Carretera Austral from Cochrane. Contrary to one of the other reviewers I would say it is something special given where it is in the world. The breakfasts are awesome, especially when you realise that most of the food available to buy in O'Higgins is tinned or frozen (in the mini-markets).

The shared facilities are all good, though I can't comment on the bathroom facilities for the dorms. The private rooms are upstairs while dorms are downstairs. I think some of the private rooms have their own bathrooms, but the upstairs shared bathrooms are always clean and only shared by about 3 rooms (either way it's unlikely to be full when you're there). The upstairs communal area is great, comfy and warm. Personally, if you've made it this far, I would splash out on an upstairs room. Jose will happily spend time giving information about the area and, if you need it, speaks perfect English - unusual down here.

One word of warning, O'Higgins is remote so take the lonely planet etc warnings seriously when they say there are no cash machines here. Bring cash (Chilean and Argentinian) because you can really only go forwards into Argentina by boat, or back the way you came - 10-12 hours by road back to Cochrane, or to Caleta Tortel, but neither are exactly full-service towns...

Room Tip: Splash out on a private room upstairs.

Nothing spectacular, but has clean rooms and a good breakfast. Easily the best hotel/hostel in town. The host was very informative and even called ahead to get us booked on the glacier tour. We had a private room with a shared bathroom, but no one else was there, so we had the bathrooms to ourselves.
