At 45 soles a room, the 'tourist' doubles here are great value. On the top floor, the rooms have a small ensuite with piping hot showers and amazing views across the surrounding mountains. Breakfast isn't provided but there are a few good value cafes in town. Try Killa cafe later in the day , a little corner of Europe in one of the least touristic towns in Peru.

We stayed one night. The next morning we checked out and found great accommodation at the Hospedaje San Jose for less. The maintenance at the La Portada appears non existent: the urinal drained onto the bathroom floor, the carpet was torn and ran up the walls (who ever laid it could not be bothered to measure and cut it), peeling and flaking paint. Even leaving the shower run as they suggested did not produce hot water. The place was dark, dingy and felt unclean.

Comfortable stay, great location. Rooms are very basic but acceptable. No frills. No breakfast or coffee. It gets cold at night. There are adequate blankets just a little tough getting up in the morning.

As a return visitor to Huancavelica a few times a year, this is our preferred location to stay. Friendly service (can make reservations ahead of time), excellent prices, clean, hot water, great location (a couple blocks from the plaza de armas) and plenty of warm blankets for cold huancavelica nights.

Room Tip: Higher floors are a little more drafty but good views. Most rooms are single/matrimonial if you want a private bathroom but there are also some double and triples and shared bathrooms.

La Portada offers two distinct levels of accommodation: amply sized doubles with cable TV and private bath for S/65 (US$24); and small, cell-like rooms with shared bath for S/18 (US$7), S/5 extra for TV. Showers offer ample steaming hot water; there’s free coca tea in the lobby; beds are piled high with blankets for the frigid nights; and the staff are friendly and helpful. An excellent choice in this beautiful town.
