Don't go here expecting night life and excitement. But do go to experience secluded beaches, livestock wandering the grounds, quiet atmosphere and relaxation. The accommodations are large, clean, have comfortable beds and hot water. Our cabin had a balcony from which we could see the Ocean. Food in the restaurant was good.
We walked the beach and enjoyed swimming in the Ocean. we also walked the 3.3 km to the Marina early in the morning. Beware the the bugs are hungry at that time of day and bug spray doesn't seem to bother them.

Of course you need a car. This hotel is in the end of the world!. That´s the best part of the story. The closest inhabited "village" is more than 100 kms. away and all the road that takes you there is surrounded by jungle. Warning 1: It takes long to get there and you will see very very few other cars in your trip. How is still possible to find places like this in the 21st century? How long are they going to last in this virgin state? Not much, I´m afraid. You can really feel isolated there. You have a 6 kms. tropical beach just four yourself in front of your cabin. Not much else to do, that´s true. But perfect for a couple of days of total relax.
Warning 2: Make the reservation in advance or most probably they (police) won´t let you enter the National Park Road (the last 60 kms. drive) and you could be forced to drive two hours back to civilization.
The rooms (cabins) are really well equiped. Almost Luxury finish. Very good broad bed (in our case). But the rest of the facilities are average. Food was repetitive (all around Cuba, by the way) and I would say scarce (but we were unlucky to share restaurant with a group of 16 Russians who ate and drunk it all before our eyes!!!). Maybe this is the weakest point of the hotel.
Warning 3: there is also a small ship-base 4 kilometers from the hotel where you can do scuba diving, sunset trips, etc... The crew is nice but they will try and try to sell you any kind of activity for a reasonable price. The prices are reasonable indeed, the activities are not really professional. You choose.
As a whole: an original, lovely and unforgettable experience. If you have the time and also the guts to travel there.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the rooms near the restaurant. There could be some noise. Not to many double-beds.

Our Canadian-style cabins with interlocking rooms were beautiful, large and clean with a good view across into the trees which led onto the beach. We were pretty much the only guests around, so we had the beach to ourselves.
We turned up here in a cab expecting to be able to hire bikes and motos to get around as the location in the depth of a nature reserve is pretty remote. Unfortunately, the man who 'owned' the bikes and the scooters was not around. This was a major inconvenience: it meant we couldn't get out at night to see the turtles laying their eggs, had to walk in the heat to the marina to book our dives and only got a quick look at the beach on iguanas in the cab on the way back. Equally, without a car, there is only one place to eat: the hotel restaurant and while we were there their food stocks were a bit low!
But, if you want to get off piste into the wild it is a fabulous location. Wild pigs wander with their babies, birds and butterflies abound, the sea is beautiful and, if you're into diving, the dives are meant to be among the best: there's a large wall which you can go down. My son saw a sleeping shark and a whole host of other less common fish, and the four of us got a whole swish catamaran to ourselves

We wanted a beach element to our holiday in Cuba and when we saw this on the internet we said yes please. To 8 days worth. The people who sold us the holiday tried to talk us out of it, the people running the other hotel we stayed at said we were mad and the receptionist looke at us like we were carazy when she saw how long we stayed for. HOWEVER. peace and quiet, beautiful and amazing should be described by this place in the dictionaries of the world.

The journey there is not short, about 2 hours after the last inhabited village on the road, but the journey is all your own, except for the wildlife, 4 foot lizards, land crabs, birds of every hue and butterflies by the billion, and no that is not hyperbole.

The accommodation is simple but very good, and the only 15 rooms for 40 miles. THe resteraunt/bar/breakfast room is only half the size of half a tennis court but the food is simple and very very good. The staff are excellent and still react to Brits like we are some strange species.

Please remember this is the very tip of Cuba, there are only 15 rooms for over an hours drive and there are no night clubs but go with the right attitude and there is no where better to relax.

Don't miss a dinner down at the marina, there is scuba diving, snorkling and a catameran that you can go out on. The beaches go on for miles, the wildlife is exotic, the birds are not afraid and the crabs are a delight.

Take everything you need - or could need for the only shop down at the Marina has only the basics.

If you want to get away from it all then this is place for you!. Other people may mention the sand flies and yes a little annoying but not hte end of the world, but in may a place where the thunderstorms are brilliant, the fireflies enchanting and the relaxation - perfect.

Ow and WOW the butterflies, BILLIONS!!! -

We drove here from Vinales, a long way but a great drive and definitely worth it. The drive down the coast is great with loads of birds and different lizards to look at. When we went there were loads of crabs in the road which ran one way or another as we attempted to swerve around them.
When you arrive you are met by smiling and helpful staff who really do love the resort. The cabins are spacious and clean and whilst dated are comfortable and some have great views through the trees to the beach.
The resort is a bit spooky when you are the only ones there but seems to be popular with cubans at the weekend. There are loads of animals around, pigs, cows and cats as well as the crabs and millions of butterflies that fly down the beach. We saw woodpeckers, hummingbirds and numerous other birds and an iguana.
The beach is stunning, White sand and warm clear water, the only draw back is the sand flies. We went for a run to Marina but were chased all the way there and back by bees which I really didn't like.
The food is good, probably the best we had.
The only thing I must mention is that whilst I had not booked, I had thought that I would dive here but the compressor was not working, so a little disappointing. I would check if you are planning to dive. It seems the same company also run the mountain bikes and mopeds which also did not work.
Overall, a really relaxing place, a great drive to get there and lovely when you are there. The only draw back is the Mosquitos and sand flies and the bees if you go out of the resort.

Total private seclusion at the most western point of Cuba!

We wanted to spend a few days relaxing at the end of our trip, but got the impression that Cuba is full of all-inclusive resorts were you have to wear wristbands. Not here!! You should not come to this resor if you are looking for night-life, entertainment etc. Here all you can do is swim, read and relax.

Hardly any guests at all, empty beach, nothing much to do in the near vicinity. The cabins are very large & spacious and surprisingly nicely decorated.
The main building is not the most beautiful. Also if there are a few guests you need to be early for mealtimes to get an outside table. The food is reasonable enough.
We loved our stay here and ended up extending it.

Getting here
Having read a few of the other reviews we were prepared for an adventurous trip, but it turned out not to be that bad: we had the local Vinales travel agent arrange an early morning mini-bus transfer to Maria La Gorda. You have to contact Cabo in advance to send a van to pick you up from La Gorda. Due to a mistake on our part there was no car waiting for us. Staff was very friendly and helped arrange a car to come and pick us up later in the day. So we ended up having lunch at La Gorda (ugly resort – would not want to stay there). In the end we got a lift from some other travelers driving down to Cabo. Judging from the other reviews the road seems to have greatly improved and we had no trouble getting to Cabo.

Tips:
You cannot buy anything at Cabo. A few km away is a harbour were you might be able to buy sunscreen lotion, but that is about it. You need cash to pay at the restaurant. There is no internet connection. There is no mobile phone reception. There is a card-payphone, however you can not purchase phone cards here (they did not even have any at La Gorda to send over).

As you can read in the other reviews the sand flies are ferocious, but if you apply strong deet you should be alright. They remain a little unpleasant, but would certainly not be enough of a reason to stay away.

Are you heading from here back to Havana before you fly out again? Consider this alternative: book yourself a room at the lovely Mokka hotel – in the middle of nature but only about 45 min drive from the airport (see my review). La Gorda will arrange a cab that will pick you up at a crossing where the bus from La Gorda will drop you. (If you ask La Gorda to book at Mokka for you, get the reservation confirmation number)
