“OK but not great”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

Basic bungalows with sitting area and separate bedrooms. AC units that don't work correctly. What few activities that are available all come with a fee. Even a fee for a beach chair. No extra beach towels. The beach/water was warm and inviting and there was a bit less sea grass here. It is shallow for quite a ways out. OK gift shop. OK restaurant but the food is pretty basic as it was throughout our trip and nothing to distinguish it. We happened to be here during the land crab migration and got to listen to them scratching at the doors all night! Watch here you walk.

We spent 4 nights here as the base for a fishing trip. The bungalows, though spacious were pretty basic. Some upgrading of the plumbing and decor and the accomodation would be very acceptable. Our package included all meals and though the meals were repetitive, the food quality was good and the service from the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is situated on a small sandy beach. We would be happy to return here as it is the convenient base for fishing/ bird watching in the knowledge that the hotel is no frills and 2 star standard.

We were in Playa Larga for the world-class bird-watching in the Zapata park, and it’s a bit hard to see why anyone would ever stay at this ‘resort’ if they didn’t have a similar activity (perhaps diving or fishing) to focus on. The Hotel Playa Larga is large and barrack-like, and somewhat forbidding, as other TA reports have mentioned. But you can forget about that once you’re inside your clean and spacious (if spartan) bungalow accommodation, with its large twin-double bedroom and living area (TV, fridge, good AC). These units have clearly been recently refurbished, including individual piping-hot solar water systems, and make for a perfectly comfortable stay. We were out early, and didn’t spend any time at the hotel itself, which sports a small beach and snack bar. We ate in the hotel, which was every bit as grim as we expected it to be, with the usual soup/chicken/fish/rice options plonked in front of you by somewhat surly wait-people. Breakfast was also poor – possibly the most disgusting coffee and juice of the trip; but we weren’t here for a gourmet experience. No internet.

There are monuments everywhere around here to the Bay of Pigs fiasco, here known as the Playa Giron mercenary invasion, of interest to those of us who can remember it. The little museum at Playa Giron itself is quite well done, about 30k down the coast where the main yanqui landings took place, opposite the maybe-slightly-less-grim and larger Playa Giron resort complex.

For Zapata birding we had a half-day out with Angel (brother to the well-known guide Chino Zapata) who provided an excellent day out looking for endemics and specialist species. Reached via Chino (Orestes Martinez Garcias) chino.zapata(at)gmail.com, or better via text – (53) 525 39004.

Cabin style rooms with saggy beds, musty odors; would have given two stars but the lack of water -- not just hot water, any water at all --- they turn it off overnight, and not on again until 7 or 8 am and it comes on slowly -- just a poor experience. The restaurant has cafeteria atmosphere, to put it nicely - some might say prison style. The coffee was undrinkable. The food was mostly OK. Yes, this is Cuba, but the stale bread really does evoke prison fare. The beach was lively with locals on the day we were there, a bit loud, and nothing particularly attractive about this stretch of beach. Service overall was typical of the government owned properties in Cuba -- poor.

The first thing to say is that this place is extremely difficult to review as I've never seen anything quite like it and it would be easy to talk it down on first impressions - and we only stayed for one night. The accommodation is in 70's built concrete cabins, painted in pinks and whites and oranges, each with a porch complete with rocking chairs (not always enough - some only seem to have one for two people). These cabins are scattered throughout the extensive and well maintained grounds, with lots of space between them. The overall impression was of a slightly surreal American suburban estate. But while the rooms were basic, they were very clean and comfortable, if in need of some serious investment. The aircon was quiet and effective.
The reception area, restaurant and bar are directly on a lovely stretch of under-used beach - quite idyllic, with some lovely walks along the coast - complete with occasional remains of concrete pill boxes, are reminder of the dangerous but heroic struggles of the revolution to defend itself against US aggression.
The staff were helpful, friendly and attentive, but the public areas need sprucing up - they looked tired and gloomy, some of which is no doubt the result of the privations forced on Cuba by the disgraceful US blockade, but there are other factors to bear in mind here, such as that this is a relatively remote rural area in a beautiful National Park with few places to stay. However, some factors could be improved that have no relation to money or equipment.
For example, the restaurant is better than first appears - but it is gloomy and we were asked brusquely if we wanted 'pork, fish or chicken?' as we sat down. This gave the impression of a plain, one course meal. In fact there was a plate of hors d'oeuvre, then soup, then the main course and then a sweet. It was good. They were 'under selling' it.
In the morning at breakfast, some people asked if they could eat outside - the restaurant has an outside area virtually on the beach. This seemed to really confuse the waiters, who at first refused and then complied. However, the outside area is really to be prized, and a little initiative would tell the people running the place that most people would prefer to eat out there - so with a little bit of imagination (and no cost), the place could be much more attractive.
So - a difficult review, but I would recommend staying AND eating at the restaurant. But to the management and staff, say- 'organisation and imagination'. You are skilled, friendly and committed, but think outside the box.

Hotel Horizontes Playa Larga is located in a beautiful location right on the water with beautiful views of the bay and ocean.
When our group checked in we were given a cabin that reeked of cigar smoke. We changed and our new cabin was fine for a while.
The receptionist came out, helped us with some broken furniture and was really great in helping.
When we turned on the A/C insects and little gnats flew out - we sprayed insect repellent and that worked.
After a walk on the beach we returned to our room and felt the room cooling.
Unfortunately, by 10 PM when we went to bed the room had not cooled below 74 F.
Going into the bathroom we checked the water - ran fine at the sink and nothing in the shower.
I then went to the reception and the night clerk was very helpful - got two men to our room and after 30 minutes had a new shower head and water. Enough for us to shower.
We also noticed that we only had one towel per person. Seems to be a practice for the government owned Cubanacan.
We had a meeting in the main building - Reception, Bar and Restaurant and it was very smoky, even with one A/C running.
When we returned to our room we saw that of the 7 lights in the room only 3 worked. We made do.
When we went to bed we noticed that the beds were single mattress - very thin with no padding.
As we traveled through Cuba these two problems were evident everywhere we stayed - except at the Melia in Havana.
Breakfast was very simple, they brought out some fruit on a plate, some bread/toast, and eggs that we wanted.
Coffee was not the strong Cuban that we liked.
This is at best a 2 Star facility.

Room Tip: Before unpacking check the A/C and WATER.

The location at the bay of pig is really AMAZING, people are somehow kind but there's a lot missing. The beach would need a cleaning, we found some trash on the ground. The dinner area is kind of creepy and the food is really a disaster (dinner and brakfast). The is never anyone in the small shop, which makes it really hard if you want to buy some water. The rooms are in a bunker-shape facing the road.
